That's a great deal, especially for local stock!

    • Yay! I found an okay first deal! :)

So looking forward to having an iPod again since my Nano died.

      • +1 Thanks mate, was gonna buy one yesterday but held off. My boy will be stoked with this :)

what's wrong listening music from your phone? I have one, only used once. have to carry another device and charge etc.
especially when you can have a 32GB or higher SD cards, with BT or wired ear phones.

    • +3

Depends on what phone you have :) some people might have an old phone or just want to experience ios

These iPods would make great gifts for kids if the parents dont wish for them to have mobiles yet. Also, less expensive if baby drops an ipod touch vs iphone.

FIFO = no phones allowed on site (for me @ an LNG site anyway). Can be a great way to relax on your breaks!

Most phones audio output isn't anywhere near as good. And this is a cheap way to access iOS ecosystem. Especially this one that uses the A8, which is on par performance wise to current gen flagship phones. Not bad for sub $300 device. Much cheaper than dropping 1k on an iPhone and the 8mp camera is also not that bad either for this price.

      • Yep, I picked one up for podcasts, audiobooks and a way to play iOS games/apps.

On a side note, is SD expansion for phones disappearing? I haven't kept in the loop but it used to be a real selling point for Android but it seems to be being offered less these days.

        • +2

Some Android flagships have it, some don't. Z5 still has it, HTC One m9 does. Samsung S6 doesn't.

        • +1

If you are a cashed up buyer looking at flagship phones then yes it is getting harder to find phones with SD card slots:
          http://www.zdnet.com/article/the-real-reason-why-micro-sd-ca…

If you are looking at budget Android phones you'll find a lot more choice.

        • @Mumbles:

Yeah, the impression I get is that Android manufacturers saw Apple doing it and said "Heeeey, we can do that too!". Half the reason I want an Android phone is because I can customise/expand it and I am not screwed on locked in hardware. If it is going to come down to straight high end phone race, for mine you are going to have to go hard to beat Apple's quality.

Other than making cell based traditional phone calls, these are pretty much the same thing. I had one for a while making calls on Viber, Skype, Facetime Audio and the like with wifi

    • +1

because i don't want to drain my phone's battery?

        • care to name one?

even a "good" phone with the best battery life is still mediocre.

For people who spend hours a day on public transport its actually a huge advantage to carry another device.

The Achilles heel for a flagship Android smartphone is that they have terrible battery life when playing 3D games.

Some of the disadvantages if you were to solely rely on an Android smartphone for 3D gaming + MP3 listening would be:
      1) still having to carry two or more devices. ie. carrying a stupid power bank + constantly finding powerpoints.
      2) having less gaming time. The Apple processors are very energy efficient and specialised for 3D video acceleration.
      3) more heat. An iPod Touch would produce less heat than a power hungry Android smartphone + power bank.
      4) lower sound/music quality. The iPhone and iPod set the standard for sound/music quality.

When I catch a plane or interstate train I feel much more confident using the iPod for gaming + music. Even when the iPod's battery warning appears it will still have about 6 hours of MP3 music still in it. If I saw a 10% battery warning on my Android Smartphone I would poo my pants as that's not enough to even use Google maps+GPS.

      • If I carried around a second Android device (tablet or phone) with all its 'radios' (2G/3G/4G/GPS) turned off, it would probably have remarkably good battery life as well! Unfortunately, I only ever carried an Android tablet in such a fashion, and that had quite a large battery, anyway.

From my very informal observation of all the people who come to my AudioVisual desk plugging in their devices for recharging during meetings, I think the number of iPhone vs Android devices needing recharge is roughly the same, although Android phones are more common among the audience which has a relatively high proportion of engineer-types (and historically, a high-proportion of WeChat/QQ users who prefer 'phablet' phones).

        • This would be a good poor mans alternative to the ipod. http://www.dicksmith.com.au/prepaid-mobile-phones/telstra-so…

Similar size despite bigger screen. 2300 mah Battery will give you plenty of battery life. I found playing games on an ipod touch will drain it pretty fast. I suppose you can't expect much out of ~1000 mah Battery.

        • @Ronnnie:

hmm how does that compare to an LG Leon @ $75?

        • +1

          @CVonC:

The advantages the Sony has over the LG.
-Supports more bands including the new vodafone 4g band 5
-Better performance, the SoC used in the Sony is significantly faster
-Better glass screen, the qHD screen is better than the LG Leon screen
-Better battery life, Sony claim upto 2 days use

At the end of the day they are both budget phones. I only suggested the Sony as an alternative to an iPod because the Sony supposedly has reasonable sound output and the performance from the SoC in this one is great and can play games in high detail at excellent frame rates.

Here's how it compares to the iPhone 6.

        • @Ronnnie:

Thanks for that. Seems like the Leon doesn't have any advantages over the E4g then?

        • +1

          @CVonC:

I wouldn't say it has many, it's on a newer version of Android. Though the version of Android it is on has ram leak issues.

I got one of these iPods and whoever thinks the battery life is good is dreaming. Ran Geekbench battery test, doesn't even get 3 hours. It's not really even that good for the size of the battery, and considering that it has no gps or radio's. For comparison sake on the same test with a budget Android phone like the zte fit, it scores over 8 hours.

Looks like some aren't even as good as what I got. 2.5 hours, that is so pissweak of a battery.

  • Just got 2 - one for my wife and I :))

  • what did I miss? Doesn't Apple sell it for $249?

    available in all colours:

    space grey

    blue

    gold

    pink

    white silver

  • Is this a relatively cheap way to experience iOS?

    • +6

      Yes

    • you even stylised the acronym correctly. ☺

I'm in marketing, can I ask what is the Apple allure is exactly? Why do you want to experience an operating system?

      • The last iOS device I used was the 1st gen iPod Touch.

I just want to familiarise myself with the OS. I'm an Android user and just want to try something else as it's hard to have an opinion on something without using it extensively first.

In all honesty I am over the whole Apple vs Android thing.

    • I purchased the cheapest iPod I could to run, essentially, just one app (Skritter). A few months later, that app was available on Android anyway! Nevertheless, I only had a Symbian phone at that stage, and the cheapest iPod was of better quality than the cheapest Android phone I could buy at time. (I have since procured a reasonable '$0' Android phone through my post-paid telephone contract).

The major deficit of the iPod, other than the lack of GSM/3G/4G, is the lack of GPS.

Cynically, I would suggest that the price of iPods give some indication of what the 'fair' price of an iPhone should be, given that complete phones with GPS can be purchased for $100.

  • Probably gonna come back to bite me, but touch wood so far both the iPod touch 5th Gen my kids have are still going strong after almost three years. Maybe battery doesn't last quite as long as it did, but I'd definitely upgrade them to the 6th Gen when the time comes.

    • I still have a 3rd gen one going strong. iPod Touches are awesome.

      • 2nd gen here. They're very durable and still do the job of playing music perfectly. But there are so many scratches on that stainless steel back!

        • I put a vinyl decal on the front and back of mine. I'm pretty sure if I peeled them off, it would look like new.

  • +1

'price beat' with the good guys. they'll give you back 120% of the difference. should work in theory, yes?

    • will this work? can TGG's refuse to sell the ipod touch?

      • sorry, what's TGG?

        • The Good Guys.

    • Thinking to go HN and get a price match plus a cheap $16 item to use Amex promte to get $50 back making it $250. I know Amex T&C excludes Apple, gift cards etc. but most people say Amex won't know.

      • I definitely consider it If it worked out like that.

    • yeah nah. every time i've bought something (or tried to) from TGG, it's been a tortuous experience. rather pay officeworks

  • love them! but now have 3 to sell as kids need byod next yr.

  • Deleted

  • Seriously!? I just bought one from Officeworks last Thursday for $319! Grrrrrr!

    • +1

just buy again and return new with old receipt

      • They include serial numbers for iPads, not sure if they do the same for iPods.

        • Yeah, they definitely do scan the serial because I had to return the one I got because I got the wrong colour. Oh well…

    • if it's last thursday they'll still accept a return. just do that. they accept change of minds

  • Does the Apple Store do price matches? I've still got my $100 voucher from the Radodirect deal on here

    • +4

Yes they do, I bought from the Apple store quoting JB Hifi's price for my iTouch 5G a few years ago.

      • wow! wonder why everyone doesn't just buy direct from apple? (also, why do other retailers want to sell apple with that policy??)

        • +1

From my experience it's only up to 10% off the RRP that they'll match. I haven't tried recently though so it might have changed.

  • Apologies in advance, I haven't been keeping up with all these Apple products, but this is the current release model (6th Gen)?

iPod 8GB nano still going strong, but I think it's time for an upgrade.

    • +1

      Yes

      • Thanks for that.

Is IOS 8 or 9 that is pre-installed?

  • Thanks OP. Picked up 3 from Nerang QLD as Xmas stocking fillers for the runts :)

  • Thanks OP, purchase in South Yarra OW. Good for those that use Android phones but have lightning connectors in our cars and want better sound than Bluetooth. Also from a brief listen this afternoon the sound quality from the DAC on decent headphones is awesome.

  • got 1 space grey from blacktown.. should be 2 left (you have to call).

had to return my 2x $119 nanos from target lol

  • I thought the latest was an iPod touch 5th gen?

    • +1

nah, the 6th gen got released without any announcement (pity huh?). Good thing it has A8 chip and 1GB RAM i.e. tested speed performance on par with iPhone 6

  • Just picked up one from the Pitt St Officeworks in Sydney if anyone is still out looking for one! Great deal OP.

  • So whats everyone doing about jailbreaking these ipods? Mine has ios 8.4.1 installed on it. Are we better off updating now or waiting?

  • Great deal, got space grey one at Elizabeth St store in Melbourne to upgrade my aging 4th gen :)

  • Saw this price at Target today.
