Best Thing to Use Fringe Benefits on

My partner got a new job in government, and part of her salary package is about $5k in fringe benefits. We have never gotten it before and are a bit uneducated in it, but from what we know, we can put it into any accounts that pay we off like home loan, health insurance etc. We don't have a lot of these and one of her workers says they just use it to pay off their credit card essentially making it $5k extra in salary.

If anyone has any other things they can think of i can put it towards that would be great. We are only a young couple at mid 20's, so we don't have a lot of expenses. The credit card does sound good if anyone could give any recommendations on one we should get.

Thanks.

  • I used to get salary packaging under the scheme for Public Benevolent Institutions when I worked at a charity, which I think is what you're talking about.

I recommend the credit card, because you can just attach the credit card statement to the paperwork you have to do quarterly. Otherwise you need to attach every receipt for everything you bought up to $5k. We also had meal entertainment salary packaging, which was time intensive, you need to harrass every food place for a tax invoice, keep every receipt and fill out paperwork about it all.

I'd choose a credit card that has the most rewards for you - If most of your expenses are at Coles, read up about the Coles credit card, if you go on holidays a lot, read up about frequent flyer ones. There are websites that compare which have the best return points per spend if you just spend generally.

One catch for me was my salary was under the HECS repayment threshold, but the salary packaging put me over because of fringe benefit tax. So I would be prepared for that, you may owe HECS at tax time.

I'm doing this one now. My company isn't giving us the credit card option. Lots of restrictions. Can't be takeaway food. Receipts can't have "dept 01" type descriptions because they are ambiguous.

How does fringe benefits impact your salary / tax? I don't have HECS. I don't understand the impact of FBT? Cr@p. Thanks.

      • Put simply - you dont get a benefit, other than instead of paying tax, you pay hecs. Keep in mind the below is very rough - but outlines the principle:

Eg. Without Fringe Benefits - Tax paid of $5k/year + hecs repaid of $0 = total tax withheld of $5k/year.
With Fringe Benefits - Tax paid of $3k/year + hecs repayment of $2k = total tax withheld of $5k/year.

So there is no overall cash increase if you have a hecs, but instead of paying tax, you start paying off your hecs debt.

Atleast thats how it used to work a few years ago when I looked at it for a friend.

      • I'm not sure of an impact if you dont have HECS. If your work uses a salary packaging company they should be able to give a bit more assistance - earn their commision somehow.

For HECS it was something like they calculated repayment on the salary + (2Ă—salary packaging benefit) so it made me repay like i was earning more.

I had both salary packaging for expenses, credit card was ok and for meals, must have a tax invoice, they were seperate. Now you mention it i remember the funny food rules. There was a thai place that did takeaway but would give a receipt that didnt mention it was takeaway, they did well.

        • i work for a queensland government department which is set up as a benevolent institution which means I can get about $18,000ish in salary sacrifice. which is great as it means I get about an extra $150 or so a fortnight (can't remember the actual figures exactly as it was set up years ago and I'm just happy to get paid).

downside is that the salary sacrifice (as toniyellow says) then gets calculated, using a formula, to a FBT amount when it comes to tax time. miy FBT comes to $29,900 (approx). this bumps up my income into the next tax bracket. which isn't so bad except I have a HECS debt and therefore my higher income makes me liable to pay back a higher amount than what I would otherwise pay. (not that I'm claiming as I have been fortunate to live in a country where the government assists people in undertaking university education through a very reasonable loans scheme)

Anyway, my salary sacrifice is claimed under homeloan repayments. some people at my work claim rent. some claim holidays.

best bet is to get your partner to talk to someone in payroll. and other coworkers.

It's pretty straight forward to set up.

  • Obviously pay off any debts first, starting with highest interest rate.

  • Fringe Benefit Tax is very new to me, as someone who can't use it towards their mortgage (don't have one) or rent (I do not pay an agent rent) I'm struggling to think what to use it for? It is a high limit of 30k. I could put it towards a car but I don't really need another. Any other ideas/help?? We have to submit what we want to claim directly to our employer and not much info was provided.
