Hair Transplant to Conceal Male Baldness

I want to hear from the men who have undergone or are seriously considering a hair transplant to conceal the baldness.

I know many will say 'shave it off', 'bald is sexy' etc. I've heard it all before and I'm really not interested in this view. Some of us just look terrible with a shaved head, plus I really couldn't be bothered maintaining my hair every other day, plus the sun is quite nasty here in Australia…

Also the two clinically proven drugs have very slow results, pretty bad side effects and again require daily discipline for the rest of your life.

Personally I see the hair transplant as the only solution.

  • Read this, i think baldness are related to nutrition on your scalp to grow hair… transplant is not a one off process, you got to repeat it from time to time.

I feel sorry for men who are already balding in their 20s. Genes are a bitch eh

    • A friend of mine is going through this and it's having devastating effects on his confidence. He went to his GP just to confirm there was no other sinister cause behind it. They said it was natural but given his young age, it's made it very hard for him to find a partner.

@OP: Wishing you luck finding a solution but it is a part of life.

A friend of mine is going through this and it's having devastating effects on his confidence.

Let's hope your friend can pull off the [Vin Diesel / insert attractive bald celebrity here] look.

    • It's worse for girls! Guys not so bad as it happens to most, but if you're a girl you get treated differently. Most adults don't stare/say anything, but the kids…

      • Hair is important to both men and women no doubt about it. But on the bright side (from female's point of view), on average women don't lose hair as often or as severely than men.

On the other hand, on the bright side (from male's point of view), while having hair is preferably to not having hair, they get the opportunity to make the most of a bad situation (see Vin Diesel, Captain Picard etc) and still get a decent amount of support/admirers (if they're good looking enough). Bald women are viewed as cancer patients or only admired by those from the "alternative" sub-culture.

        tl;dr hair > no hair > combover/denial

  • My mate started balding early 20s, he gave up the fight and just shaves it all off

  • How long since it starts? Accordingly, the earlier treatment the better the result. Have you tried
Rogaine (now off patent) so there is Regaine as well? Think they are pretty expensice in Australia ($200+ for 3 months/bottles) as compare to US generic for about $30-$40. It works for % of study samples on genetic baldness in male. DFU says must continue to use otherwise hair growth will lose again, personally feel a bit skeptical but perhaps others can share experience.

The above does work, if done daily,

Avalon also have thickening shampoo, can get it from iherb, it seems to help if you a slightly bold

I' also take zinc which is suppose to help ( get ur zinc levels tested)

Personally I had taken the pills, and used regaine, did should results, but then gave u the pill when I got a gf lol, then gave up regaine which I had a kid

Only take zinc and use the shampoo, seems ok, but am going bold, meh not much I can do now

      • sorry was on phone, had terrible spelling

Personally I had taken the pills, and used regaine, did see results, but then gave up the pill when I got a gf lol, then gave up regaine when I had a kid

My father-in-law has a poster in his house (he's been 75% bald since he was 21) which says "god made so many perfect heads, the rest he covered with hair"

I'm atheist but it makes me laugh

    • Bald since 21, that has to suck.

    • God sure does have a sickening sense of humour doesn't he/she/it.

  • Choice did an article on hair replacement options recently. It should be free to view www.choice.com.au/health-and-body/beauty-and-personal-care/h…

  • I wonder if they do it in Thailand for cheaper like other cosmetic surgeries?

Had it done 3 years ago, one of the best decisions of my life.

    • Did you do it in Australia? How much? One off procedure? Time off? Thanks
      Yeah yeah?

  • Hair is the confidence of a man?
    Vote + or -

    My vote is +

    • Let's put it this way. I don't think there's anyone on Earth who thought to themselves "you know what? I don't want hair"

Unless they were losing hair/getting bald in the first place, then that's just rationalising.

  • I have found Caboki to be good. It's basically a fine powder made of dyed particles that you apply to balding areas. Lasts an entire day. There's actually two new drugs that you might want to keep on: Link

The two drugs, Ruxolitinib and Tofacitinib have been tested on mice with grafted human hair and limited human trials. The hair regrowth is meant to take three weeks. They are both on used to treat arthritis and blood presssure, but also have a topical effect on balding areas.

    • Caboki and the likes are good - unless it rains or your +1 decides to run their hands through your hair!

  • I had a hair transplant 8 months ago, and also dare say it was one of the best things I've done in my life.
I started losing hair in mid twenties, was trying to disguise it with a combover for the past ten years, but it got to the point when I either had to stop doing it and expose my bald head to the world, or do something about it.
My surgeon told me I had perhaps 5-10% hair left on the top of my head, so imagine my horror every time the wind blew in my direction…
I read a lot about it, and like I briefly explained above I decided that hair transplant was the only true and lasting solution.
I did it in Europe, had zero issues/complications, and I am extremely happy with the results. My hairline has been restored, of course it's not as low or as thick as it was when I was 18, but I look a million times better compared to when I had a stupid combover.
I will need another surgery though to cover the crown area, and I am planning that for the next year.
I would like to encourage other men to follow in my footsteps. I can almost guarantee you won't regret it!

    • How much roughly In AUD did you pay for the procedure (if you don't mind share)? (Can pm me as well).

      • 3,000€ which is roughly $4,500 for 3,000 follicles… I believe one follicle costs $8 in Australia, so 5 times more than I paid overseas…

Surgeon LOL. As if a Surgeon would waste their time on something like hair transplant. At best you'll get a doctor, most of the time the person doing the procedure wouldn't have qualifications worth wiping your arse on.

      • Sorry I wasn't expecting skills recognition police on this forum. You are more than welcome to call him whatever makes you feel happy about yourself.

Sort of related, I was always curious about beard transplants, as I could/can never grow one.

    • funny I watched a travel show with Darren McMullen the other day where he visited a beard transplant clinic in Turkey… huge business over there…

and yet an abundance of hair where you don't want it……..

Hair transplantation is done by the specialized surgeons who have their specialty in plastic surgery or even in dermatology. Mostly it is one day procedure in which grafts according to the level of the baldness are transplanted. However sometime person can be asked to go for multiple sessions according to the requirement of grafts.
