I went with AU because I already had a lot of purchased content on the AU account and wanted to keep the majority of content together if I could.
Also because the Vita is so crappy and only lets you have one account on it and I had a heap of content already for the Vita.

AUS - rare discounts, only ever seen official discounts on membership once (just prior the PS4 launch). Occasionally gift cards go on sale at Dick Smith or Coles.
US - with the shitty exchange rate discounts on memberships only go to a few dollars less than an Aus membership. It is the actual game discounts that tend to be better. Check ebay.
