Safer and with more tracking than a Taxi

    • +8

      Found the taxi driver.

    • jv is that you?

      • -4

nah… but i have scored big on the negs! almost worthy

  • Can you just sign up for a new account and use another code

    • +5

As long as you have an unused mobile number then that should work.

      • tried and test many times. :P
        you're welcome

        • +11

So in theory, a $2 sim is all it takes for a free ride?

      • +1

Doesn't have to be unused. I just changed my number in my old account, signed out and made a new account with my old number.

        • When you changed your number in your old account, did you have to confirm the number you changed to? If not, this is a pretty good loop hole….

  • +2

What if the first ride was less than $30?

    • +3

If the first ride is less than $30 then its completely free (but the credit does not roll over). So use it for a "long ride"!

      • +1

You %100 about this? Don't want to embarrass myself.

        • +1

100% sure $30 is around 10-11km trip not including toll fee, so make sure you know how far is your destination.

        • Yep, tried it last year in Melbourne with a different promo code, and tried PRINT30 two days ago in Sydney with a new account. After the ride you receive an invoice from UBER (via email) which says amount charged to card: $0.00

  • What are the repercussions of the legality of UberX on the riders (not drivers) ?

    • Depends on your state. Look it up on the internet. Uber still makes people go through training and pay for higher grade insurance.
Uber is entirely legal in some places like ACT now as well.

From what I understand, In australia, UBERX as opposed to UBER, just means ur riding in a low cost prius or some eco/hybrid car.

      • Uber black is limo plated cars, and always been legal here.

UberX, which is cheaper, more popular, etc. is the one you hear about in the news.

UberX are generally cheaper cars yeah cause they're not a limo class, but they still have to be pretty new and in good condition.

    • Nothing, you are not breaking the law by getting into someone's car. NSW is a nanny state, but not THAT bad

      • Wouldn't it be very easy to prove that you have actually paid for the services if you get prosecuted for using something which is illegal?

        • The passenger isn't breaking any laws. Uber is arguably illegal because it is a taxi running with out official taxi plates registration or subsequent insurance. If the vehicle is not registered for commercial use then that is also illegal.

The passenger is not breaking any laws.

        • @Shunto: technically uber is just a service like tinder and dating apps that bring people together who have a common interest or need, but are also able to fulfil additional commercial and financial services as well

      • It isn't so much a legality issue for the passenger. It will be the lack of insurance in an accident.

        • -2

Yeah but it's the same as getting in a mate's car and being involved in an accident. Taxi's just have the 'extra' insurance. It's not like you're not going to jump in your friends' car because you're worried about insurance. My understanding is CTP still holds up and when people talk about 'no insurance', they mean the Taxi insurance. I am NOT 100% sure about this though - someone please feel free to correct me

        • +1

@Shunto: NO it isn't the same, once you are operating as a commercial business your standard insurance does not cover you or your passenger for an accident. e.g. if you are with NRMA your CTP does not cover you when operating as a for hire or taxi service. Your CTP is rendered invalid. I "believe" this is the same for other providers too. If you are a for hire or taxi the CTP cost is about 10 times the prices.

        • -1

@gromit: Right. It calls to question though, how hard is it to avoid anyone knowing you were in an Uber? It is to the benefit of the driver and the passenger to say they are friends.

        • @Shunto: Sure you can take that approach. insurance fraud can work, obviously if you get caught you can both share a cell. depending on the level of injury it would probably be far better and safer for the passenger to simply sue the driver for everything he had. insurance fraud investigators are pretty good, I bet this type of thing would be high up on their target list.

So nice to catch an UberX yesterday.

1st off, they didn't just drop the booking with no contact when the driver had difficulty locating the address to pick me up. Then the driver was clean, the car was clean. Then I was offered mints, water and a phone charger.

There is nothing stopping taxis doing any of this for their customers right now. But they don't, because they do not give a sh*t. This us why UberX will always be my preference.

    • -4

      Then the driver was clean

Do Most of the Uber Driver always took a shower every time they pick up a client?
Sounds like they tried to get lucky #flamboyantDriver #noHomo

      • +1

Yeah I only ever take a shower when I'm trying to pickup.

        Are you a taxi driver?

    • +2

I just had my first ride from Circ Quay to North Sydney, loved it. Guy was cool and free water, I felt cared about, when I take a taxi I feel I have to wipe the spit off

Although according to the costs it more expensive then a taxi

  • +3

Signed up - should cover my uber home after the christmas party next month :)

    • +5

      Beware of surges.

  • Can sometime tell me is Uber legal in NSW or not ?

    • in NSW using Uber for taxis and black hire cars, yes legal. UberX, technically illegal, but I still use it when I'm in Sydney.

UberX in Canberra is now legal, as of 30th October

      • Asked my UberX driver about this 2 days ago, he said if he got pulled over he just has to say he is driving his "mates". Still illegal in Sydney but the number of customers and drivers keep increasing every day!

        • I figured they catch you by using the uber app to hail you, not by randomly pulling cars over and asking if they were uberx drivers.

        • -1

@sb944: is this true? by using the uber app they become uber customers and complying with the terms of use…

        • +1

@ilikedeals: I don't think that violating the terms of use would be enforceable at the best of times, let alone when it runs contrary to law and law enforcement

    • -1

Passengers of UberX will be fined and drivers let off with a smile.

  • Just entered the code, accepted then that's it, nowhere in the app indicates I have $30 credit so I am sure it had disappeared when I need to use it later as it cannot even be seen that it is there.

    • you will not see the credit in the app but once you completed your first trip up to $30, you will get an invoice for $0

    • Have you looked under payment? It doesn't always show though

    • +1

You can only see once logged into browser, not app

  • +3

my uberX are never eco bombs, ive had X5's (normal plates), had a calais, ford mondeo, focus xr5, golf gti, audi a4, lexus is.
    im in sydney also

    • I've had small to medium 4 doors generally and some one trying to make money doing it in a Jeep Cherokee!?!? Maybe not paying for fuel or servicing (or towing!) http://www.destroymyjeep.com/

      • +1

Some of the drivers just enjoy driving and are happy to take money whilst doing so.

    • In Gold Coast / Brisbane, worst car I've had is a new i20 (only cause its small and not overly comfortable).
According to my history I've had:
      i20
      i30
      VE SV6
      Nissan Murano
      Commodore SV6

  • Does this work with the referral code as well? So could get $40?

    • Same question. Also should I use this or wait for $40 code Iknowsomeone? Thanks

    • +2

You can only use one promo code when making a new account, referrals must be used when signing up, same goes for this code. So no.

  • Is there any uber x in melbourne airport?

    • There is no UberX at Tullamarine airport, only Uber Black.

You can catch an UberX from the CBD to the airport, but it's going to cost quite a bit (roughly no less than a Taxi).

    • You have to set the marker pin slightly outside the Melbourne Airport area (such as near the McDonalds IIRC) for pickup

  • how to check that i have the $30 free ride?

    • +1

once you enter the code it will a popup box will tell you that your code was successful - thanks ilikedeals

  • What happens when you apply the code and then wait past the expiry date? I used one of these First Ride coupons a while ago and decided to use Uber recently. I applied another code I found on here on the day but it says I've already used the one I mentioned earlier so I can't use it again. Did the previous code expire and thus I'll never get to take advantage of the First Ride discount?

    • I would assume past expiry date means you won't be getting the free ride..?
And this code is for first time users (so new accounts with a different mobile number)

  • +1

    Upto $30?

When I registered with a new account and added a promo code, it said PRINT15! $30 off your first ride with Uber. Does it mean I will get $15 only or full $30?

    • Some people have "PRINT15!" and others have "PRINT30" displayed on the screen. The code to use is PRINT30 and don't worry if you have PRINT15! displayed. You will still get a free first ride (up to $30) if you use the correct code while signing up

  • -2

Good luck to ya all when you try and use it! Did everything they asked with this code and they still charged full price, just another scam when I gave them a go.

    • How is this a scam if it works for everyone else? Did your credit card get charged?

  • +2

I would like to thank Ozbargain for saving me from a large taxi fare. Trains were down and I hadn't realised until I was dropped off there. Waited at the replacement train bus stop for a while and realised that it wasn't going to come or it would take another hour or more. I remembered reading about this coupon and Uber and decided to give it a shot, got home and was charged only $3. It was a relatively pleasant experience, though, I probably won't use it again unless I'm in a tight situation again, as despite it being cheaper than a regular taxi, it's still pretty expensive in my books.

    • +1

Yet no + for the deal?

      • +1

I'm a very casual user of ozbargain, completely forgot that existed. Thanks

  • +1

I very rarely have the need to use a taxi but needed to this morning as my better half was committed elsewhere and I had to drop my car off at the repairers. I remembered this deal so joined up Uber via the app and entered the code. Not long after I was picked up in a brand new jet black V8 XK Jaguar!! The car was mint and very comfortable. The driver was a top bloke and we had a great chat about very similar interests. All up the fair cost me $9.81 after the discount. What an awesome deal and great experience. Thanks OP.

    • glad you were able to use it :)

    • I also used this code as I took my car in for a service and I didn't want to catch public transport on a 35 degree day. Unfortunately, I wasn't picked up in anything as exotic as a Jaguar. Good experience though :)

  • Can I use this in Jan or is the Dec expiry just for the redemption of the code for the $30?
    Thanks!

  • I just entered this promo code. Still works.

  • Can you stack the $30 from the code and the $10 referral for a ride worth $40?

  • Applied code and tried to use this on UberTaxi, didn't work, had to pay full price ($50 ride). Complained to Uber through their webform: "It looks like this was an uberTAXI trip, and unfortunately Uber promotions do not apply to taxi trips."
They did honour the credit at the end though which is great. Perhaps update the description of this voucher?

    • Great, thanks for pointing this out.
      Post updated :)

      • You sure? Can't see the update.

        • Turns out I can't update the post because someone else edited the URL with the /PRINT30 code (and they think I'm adding a referral link which I'm not allowed to…)

    • What's a uberTAXI?

      • +1

If you open the app, you'll see 3 booking categories down the bottom.

      • Thanks bozbagain. I can only see two. "Black Car" and "uberX"

  • So if the ride is more than $30 e.g. ride is $50, they will just deduct $30 from total right meaning I only pay $20?

  • Will this code work on a "Black Car" or just the "uberX" service?

  • What's the tipping ettiquete when using Uber?

When booking a regular taxi I sometimes tell the driver to 'keep the change' or give them a small tip if the driver is friendly and doesn't stink, car is clean/well maintained/new and if they take the best route.

From what I understand (and my very limited personal experience) Uber drivers/taxis excel at all these points so is common to tip them?

    • +2

Just took my first Uber ride, you can't pay anything. Get in the car, driver swipes his app to start the trip. Get out of the car, driver swipes to end the trip. No cash is exchanged hands

BTW.. Just caught an uber ride from Wheelers Hill to Toorak South, and the total of the trip was $31.00. So, the trip cost me $1!!

      • Glad you saved $30 :)

  • Hello, I just tried signing up with promo PRINT30 and was informed the code has expired! Is this code still valid?

  • Tried to use it today but it was expired. Used the telstra treats one instead

  • Tried to register today but it was expired
