Any review on this phone? How's the camera like?

  • Coming up $396 for me

    • Is the currency in USD and have you applied the coupon?

      • its in AUD, how do i change currency?

        • Nvmmmm, Found it!

      • Now its $399AUD, Sigh

  • +1

How does this compare against the LG G4? What would happen if you need warranty work done ?

    • +12

If you have the extra $70~ I would wait for another LG G4 deal. It has a better processor & gpu, resolution, camera, internal memory (32gb as base model).

      • +8

        Also Band 28 for Telstra/Optus

        • What's special about this band. Is it the fastest available? Does it have wide coverage?

        • @lostn: Just wider coverage. Penetrates buildings.

      • Hopefully it's for a local model as I don't feel comfortable buying a grey import

        • I don't think you will get a good price on the local G4's. The good deals only come for grey imports so you're out of luck there.

    • +32

Here's one of my classic (dare I say, famous :3) comparisons, better spec is in bold, draw/subjective is in italic clears throat

      G4 vs X

Best In Class 5.5" 2560x1440 RGB IPS 'Quantum' Display vs Still Fantastic 5.0" 1920x1080 Pentile AMOLED Display
72.5% Screen to Body Ratio vs 71.3% Screen to Body Ratio
      Snapdragon 808 @ 1.8GHz vs Snapdragon 801 @ 2.3GHz
      3GB 933Mhz Dual Channel LPDDR3 RAM vs 3GB 933Mhz Dual Channel LPDDR3 RAM
      32GB eMMC 5.0 vs 16GB eMMC 5.0
Badass 16MP OIS LAF Camera w/ 4K Video & unbeatable manual control vs Not very tested, but seems great 13MP PDAF Camera w/ 4K Video
8MP Front Facer vs 8MP Front Facer (I'm assuming 720p video, judging by Oneplus' track record, but no proof, so no win for G4)
Leather/Plastic Chassis vs Absolutely stunning microcut aluminium chassis with 2.5D Gorilla Glass 3 Front/Back Panels (subjective I guess, but let's be real)
Gorilla Glass 3 vs Gorilla Glass 3
MicroSDXC up to '2TB' vs MicroSDXC up to '2TB'
Single Sim vs Dual Sim - Note you can't use MicroSD and Dual Sim at the same time
      802.11ac WiFi vs 802.11ac WiFi
Okay Back-Firing 1W Speaker vs Okay Bottom Firing Speaker
      FM Radio vs FM Radio
GODAWFUL UI DO NOT EVEN ARGUE JESUS IT'S BAD vs Great, if a bit feature-lacking 'Oxygen OS' Based on Stock Android
Very Fast Android Update History vs Pretty Awful Update History

      FINAL WORDS:

If you want a big, clunky, slightly more expensive dare I say geeky Android 'Flagship' with an absolutely kickass camera, pick the G4.

If you want a smaller, jewel-like, smooth/streamlined, slightly cheaper Android Smartphone with last year's flagship specs, pick the X.

LG ui isn't that bad, im coming from LG g2 and I've played around with g4 in shops.

        • You don't mind it? I absolutely despise it, it's what stops me from buying an LG phone. I just find it so ugly and inconsistent, like what Touchwiz used to be (but worse).

        • +1

@deanylev: Definitely a matter of preference. I've seen reviews saying the G4 UI is much better than the G2 and slightly better than G3. Coming from S2 and S4 TouchWiz and having used stock KitKat, I find I prefer the G4 UI out of the lot. I don't like how stock handles quick settings, and TouchWiz is laggy (though supposedly better in S5 and S6). G4 notifications is a bit annoying but not terrible.

I still use Nova Launcher though. Haven't really tired the default launcher.

        • @elusive: If the first thing you do is disable part of the LG UI to run a third party launcher, it's a pretty good indication the stock UI is rubbish.

        • @galapogos01: That has nothing to do with it. I've been running Nova Launcher since my S2 days, and I just import all my apps (Titanium Backup) when I use a new phone. The stock launcher might be absolutely brilliant and I'd still not use it. (Actually I rather like the Smart Notice thing they have on the stock launcher, but it's not a standard widget I can get on Nova unfortunately.)

I'd consider the launcher the least important part of any UI. It's the most easily replaceable and isn't all that important. The status bar, notification/drag-down panel and the softkeys get far more use.

In fact, I also have a CM11 phone here and a Sony Xperia E2 (KitKat) phone, and the launchers there are worse.

        • @galapogos01: Probably why many people replace Google Experience Launcher with Nova I guess ¯_(ツ)_/¯

        • +1

@deanylev: Really… Put Google Now Launcher on it and the experience comes back a lot closer to stock.
Also, have a good look at Oneplus's update history…. I have a Oneplus One, and the current OFFICIAL OS is Oxygen 1.0.3 (based on Android 5.0); The Oneplus 2 shipped with Oxygen OS 2.0 (based on Android 5.1) same as the X, but there has no official word as when a variant based on 6.0 will be available.
On the flip side, a glass back panel…WTF! its hard enough not smashing one side, let alone two!

Disclosure, I have a G4 as my current daily driver & a OPO that has been retired due to damage (among other Androids).
I'm not brand loyal, but I am a fan of Oneplus. I had high hopes for the OP2, but it just didn't cut it for me.

        • @ozdavo: Um.. No.. Absolutely not. If a launcher solved a bad UI no one would complain. You literally just launch apps from the launcher, that's about it.

I also literally called out their terrible update history, if you read my comparison…

If you just slap a case/skin on it, or are just careful with your phone (glass backed Z2 is fine almost 1.5 years in), a glass back is fine.

        • @deanylev:
-So you launch apps from the laucher, what else do you do with your phone that is not in apps? Sorry for my ignorance, but I thought that was the biggest part of a UI? What this is it you hate about the LG UI?

-Sorry my bad re the update history, I mis-read your post (thought the "Very Fast Android Update History" was a follow on from the "Great, if a bit feature-lacking 'Oxygen OS' Based on Stock Android"

-Happy to agree this is a personal thing. Some will love it, some will hate it. (Personally I like the idea of the ceramic back option)

        • @ozdavo: Ah maybe I was a bit snappy towards you. Sorry.

But what I mean is, all you do in the launcher is look at your lists of apps. It doesn't change the horrible settings app, not great camera app, and all the other bloat and crappy looking apps.

No problem, thought you might've misread.

And yep, it's a very love it or hate it thing. Glass is my favourite material for a phone, and I think the ceramic one looks badass.

        • +1

@ozdavo: IMO anything that you can't change easily (by installing an app for example) is the UI. The list is endless:

          • The way the status bar works
          • The way the Settings screen behave
          • Notifications
          • Quick Toggles
          • DPI setting
          • Lock Screen

I far prefer the LG skin to TouchWiz (in fact TW is the main reason I won't even consider buying a Samsung phone) and it is relatively not that far off stock Android. But vanilla Android is still best ;-)

        • +1

          @ozdavo:
When you scroll within the apps. You'll see stuttering rather than super smooth scrolling. Also heaps of ram usage from bloated LG apps. So mutitasking wouldn't be as good as a phone with stock android. Updates are slow so you won't get the latest bug fixes from google.
G4 never got 5.1.1 update, it still has lots of minor bugs in the os. Same with the G3, its still stuck 5.0 which had lots of bugs, memory leaks which google later fixed 5.0.2.
When they stuff up the underlying os then everything you do on the phone (performance) would be crap.

        • @elusive:
I like everything about the G4. This new 1+X looks awesome but misses band 28 so that makes it a deal breaker in my book. My favorite thing about my G4 is battery life.
          http://tinypic.com/r/16hr97r/9

I also like LG themes that you can download and Change the ui to look anyway you please. Also love the performance and camera. :)

      • Absolutely stunning microcut aluminium chassis with 2.5D Gorilla Glass 3 Front/Back Panels

looks rather plasticy tbh would like to see it irl. although it does look pretty schmick

        • I see what you mean, but it's all metal and glass. No plastic to be found.

      • Hahah, excellent.

    • -3

typical of phones for the Chinese market, very poor 4G band coverage …… even my 2 years old Samsung S4 has better 4G coverage and they get down to $450 during promo.

      • +2

International versions will still have poor 4G coverage. Aussie carriers use different bands than everyone else.

        • There are many other countries deploying APT700Mhz (B28).

        • @fatty: Starting to. China will catch up soon.

    • Compared to a grey imported lg g4, warranty would be the same.
Performance on the oneplus x would be better, stock android vs laggy LG ui. Coupled with the 1080p screen vs the 2k screen on the lg and a more energy efficient cpu. The Oneplus X should have longer battery life.

Initial reports of the camera is good but probably not better than the LG.
I'm considering switching to this from a Galaxy S6, but lack of support of band 28 is stopping me.

      • Why the switch from the s6? isn't it meant to be a better phone ?

        • The s6 has horrible stutter, kills apps randomly in the background and battery life is crap.

    • Is a 5.5 inch screen too big for you?

  • +2

coupon code only works for the white model, code doesnt work with the onyx black model

    • Yeah I noticed this too, dammit, I think I prefer the black one.
Looks like the black one is preorder, but white is not?
Anyway just bought a white one

  • -6

how much malware is installed on it?

    • You're getting thumbed down…

…but it may be a legit question, especially coming out of China.

Remember when Huawei got rejected in the US? Something to do with spyware, CHinese government etc.

      • Just flash a OS yourself then

      • +5

He would probably be referring to Kogan shipping the OnePlus Two with malware. Same has actually happened with generic tablets from Aldi and Target.

Cyanogen will be released for this phone officially or unofficially anyway.

  • +1

Reviews so far are quite positive and it very well may be the most phone for your money at the moment and even the construction and aesthetics supposedly feel premium. Not gonna lie it's a tempting phone and I got a S6 edge.

  • isnt this missing a number of aussie bands?

    • It has all of the 3G bands and some of the 4G bands. Aussie carriers tend to use different bands compared to the rest of the world. You can see the list of our supported bands here.

    • +1

Yea it is and its a deal breaker for me or else looks reasonable phone for that price.

      • This site shows for the One plus X that 89% of Optus bands are supported. What I actually want to know is how much box Optus'network is band 28/700? I get the feeling the 89% is just a figure of the percentage of bands and not the percentage of 4g coverage which is what really matters (I know if could prove this but it's late atm and I am tired) . Hopefully someone has some insights.

    • +2

Because a similar design does not mean similar specs?

        • Looks pretty decent especially considering how hard it can be to get sometimes.

        • +12

I don't know, they'll probably barely even register that you have a phone and think nothing at all if they're like normal people.

  • Hmm, the specs seem to say that there is no real point upgrading to OnePlus X from LG G2, so I will probably skip. Decent deal otherwise.

  • Hopefully Meilan Metal sale is coming soon.

  • good deal,
if only i hadnt brought a phone from coolicool over 2months ago that has yet to arrive

    :(

    • Why not both? I actively use more than one phone despite having dual sim.

      • +1

        Drug dealers need two phones…

        • shhhh

        • The businesse one could not be smart phone.

  • I want to change phones but I can't keep some games and the credits, quite frustrating that I've read that you have to root the phone to copy and paste the game files. First world problems.

  • +2

Not a bad phone at all but kinda pricy at launch. At the $400 segment, G4 owns.

For $250-$300, this phone would kill the moto g.

  • Does this have NFC? I cant find any info on it.

  • Recently lots of newly released phones from china gets this Snapdragon 801, bit old compared to 805, 808, 810 and upcoming 820, but still strong enough to run every tasks smoothly if it's not some garbage custom android used on it.

My favorite phone with 801 is Xiaomi Mi4, 3GB ram 64GB storage, 13Mpx Sony camera and 3080mAh, but lacks good support of 4G bands (1800, 2100MHz), so it's not so attractive in Australia and Europe.

Probably Qualcomm needs to get rid of old 801s, dropping prices, so the upcoming year you'll see many devices especially phones and tablets with this SoC

    • +2

My OnePlus One is still running strong. That 3100mah is very nice. I brought this One late last year for 428 shipped - 64gb model, Snapdragon 801 @2.5ghz (OnePlus X is 2.3), larger 5.5inch screen, bigger 3100mah battery (although the OnePlus X has smaller battery it should last almost just as long due to the lower clock speed, smaller screen size and its amoled screen) everything else is pretty much the same except the front camera on OnePlus X is 8mp compared to my 5mp and the back camera is probably better. Screen is potentially better but not sure. The OnePlus X is a fantastic choice just make sure you pick up a micro sd card from maybe one of tightarse's deal.

  • -2

If it was $350 i would grab one as a backup. But i feel a g4 is better value 4 money. refurb iphone 6 $465 are cheap on us ebay. Leaning towards iphone 6.

  • +3

Xiaomi Mi4c is pretty much the same price for a newer chipset, fantastic camera and 500mAh bigger battery.

    • …but with its custom interface.

    • +1

the only thing stopping me from buying the mi4c is it has non expandable storage :(

  • Bang for your buck in sub-$400 range!

  • Jv's picture was merged with TA!!! So much has now been explained.

    • First to notice. It's only been a month or so…

      • +1

Haha I noticed a while back, was looking at some +ive's of someone comments and saw you rocking the hybrid!!!

      • +1

Yeah don't worry, we noticed :-D

  • If you register at geek buying they send you 5% code so that we you can get black @ same price!
    Thanks for posting!

  • Sorry the oppo mirror 3 is a better phone if you want a good Chinese phone.

    • +1

Based on the specifications it doesn't appear to be.

Weaker CPU, weaker cameras, less RAM, less storage and Android 4.4 to name a few.

      • +5

So pretty much everything is worse

        • Everything besides being Oppo ;)

  • I've got a Sony Xperia Z3 Compact, would the OnePlus X be an upgrade?
I'm finding the 2GB ram a bit limiting at times, so looking for a 3GB phone in a similar size.

    • Look back n get z2.

      • Thanks, but Z2 looks a bit too big

        • Agree with pyramid and look for Z2 or Z3.
Z2 is not that much bigger than OnePlus X, similar glass and metal construction with added water resistance, bigger battery and front firing speakers.

  • Not a great idea to get this, unless your budget is fixed and you need a phone right now. And you can't live with a Nexus 5. Expansys has some deals but this Nexus 5 will be missing some 4G bands I think. Then again, so will the OnePlus X.

    http://www.expansys-usa.com/tag2.aspx?tag=Google-Nexus-Deals…

Advice from a systems engineer for a different perspective to the discussion here.

Forget the specs. Third party customized Android distributions have always been a bad investment. Recent security issues in Android make it worse than that - you're risking your private data.

This phone may never get Android 6.0. You are stuck with their customized Android (called Oxygen), or flashing ROMs. Oneplus seem to have taken their time to patch the stagefright bug, and even longer to issue an OTA update. I can't find any information about full storage encryption support.

In terms of usage, stability, security, updates, user friendliness, even the Nexus 5 on Marshmallow will run rings around this.

If you care about things like camera quality, do yourself a favour and pay a bit extra for a Nexus 5X / 6P / anything recent from Motorola or LG or Samsung. Or even that new HTC phone.

    • I have a nexus 5 on marshmallow - it won't run rings around the One X. It has a newer SoC, 3GB RAM and a great ROM (check out reviews of One Plus Two).

How is your private data at risk compared to Stock Android?

    • Does expansys US ship to Australia as I can't find the nexus deals on the Australian part of the site.

    • +1

I agree with what you say but OnePlus are no worse then Samsung, LG and HTC on the upgrade front, especially on older phones.

      My LG G3 is still on 5.0 - https://www.androidpit.com/lg-g3-android-update

I think the only way to ensure you get latest updates is a Nexus phone but the 2015 phones have been underwhelming and expensive (especially here with our dollar). That or a Motorola…

      See - https://www.androidpit.com/what-is-stagefright-on-android-am…

Plused just for being available, I signed up today to the mailing list in case I decide I want one it's a shame about the lack of 4g bands. Mind you this looks like a great phone, good design is paramount, and there are some less than ideal designs in Android circles, and nexus devices are all single sim so won't do me.

Anyone have any hands on experience with Oxygen OS? From what people say about it it sounds decent (simple/close to vanilla android)
