Why Do People Chose PCCG over MSY etc These Days

Hey guys.
Iv noticed a trend lately of people especially gamers chosing PCCG which is a bit more expensive than places like MSY who are a lot cheaper.

Back in the day it used to be Scorptech over MSY
But people looking for bargains go to Umart or MSY.

Anyone got thoughts on this?

It's because PCCG have a wider range of enthusiast brands and parts compared to MSY.

I always go to MSY because the prices are cheapest and my local branch is friendly. But if MSY don't stock what I'm after I'll look at PLE or PCCG.

  • I don't think people purchase from PCCG because it is more expensive. I always thought it was used for convenience of listing parts. I've never used PCCG, MSY is usually cheapest but UMART is comparable in most areas and has a much larger variety. Also depends where you live, I'm from Sydney.

  • wider range. only recently has msy started to stock watercooling components. even then it's a small amount

  • I live in the south-eastern suburbs, glenny, when I built my current computer (i5 4670k, r9 290) sometime nearing ~2 years ago, I drove around and bought parts from PCCG (must've picked up gfx card and case here), MSY(most of my components came from here) and Scorptec (think i went here to get a hyper 212 evo fan).

  • I always check the price on MSY and IJK/Umart first. It's hard to beat their prices. I only go else where when they don't have stocks.

I don't prefer other stores if they are more expensive.

  • A recent trend of people choosing PCCG over MSY? No. It's been happening for years and years and years.

PCCG has a superior range and customer service, and will often try to price match MSY if you ask nicely.
Plus the MSY website is absolutely rubbish.

    • PCCG always tell me they don't price match

      • I meant Scorptec

        • Scorptec are pretty good with price match

    • Yeah I don't know why they can't find the money across all their damn stores to have someone fix and maintain that damn site

  • Now that I think about it, as others have said, the times I went down there was because they had a product MSY didn't have. Same goes with scorptec or centrecom, I just go where it's cheapest as they are all a similar distance. PCCG is more convenient for picking items up than the others though.

I also wouldn't say MSY is a lot cheaper, I find the prices are usually the same or at least within a few dollars.

MSY is always out of stock. You might phone up and ask, do you have any stock? They say yes but as soon as you arrive there's none left.

They don't hold things for you either.

MSY: where our motto is More Stock Yesterday.

The name you can trust: the stock count you cannot!

    • So true. I went there with 5 backup choices, they had none, NONE!
Forced to buy more expensive option, got home, it had finger prints and marks all over it.

      PCCG, fast, reliable, efficient.

Pay a bit extra for shipping and getting what you choose with PCCG, well worth it.
Petrol is about the same and not having to line up with overweight geeks that don't bathe is a plus.

  • I use both. I live in Berwick and my default tech shopping area is what I call the Mulgrave/Clayton/Notting Hill triangle - I get MSY, PCCG and CPL all in the same drive.
My default is MSY Clayton but when looking for stuff that isn't necessarily run of the mill I go to PCCG or CPL. Prices are usually the same in all 3, differing by less than $5 usually. I like that I can use cash at MSY and CPL. PCCG is my least favourite as there are no facilities for cash transactions. I do like that they (PCCG) take PayPal though. Most of my tech spending is from my play money…either from stuff I've sold on eBay or Gumtree and also gifts (cash).
Staff are fairly ok at MSY - do onto others, etc., CPL are least helpful of the 3 I find. Can't really tell for PCCG but the guys you pick up from at the warehouse are always friendly.

  • I only get components that have no chance of failure from scorptec or where I know I can directly deal with the manufacturer and bypass them if something goes wrong. Why: Scorptec warranty process is extremely painful and the fellows there at the repair centre don't seem to have the necessary training on fault diagnostics. I've dealt with them on motherboard problems and after months of waiting on them and actually being sent back and forth between offices to pick-up equipment that never actually arrived I'd ended up picking up a board myself without it being repaired, then driving out to the manufacturers warranty repair centre (gigabytes offices) and organising the diagnostics and repairs myself. The staff at the Gigabyte office told me Scorptec are a very hard to deal with and confirmed that although Scorptec had claimed to have sent the board to them, the board had never reached their office and therefore had never been tested. P.S. They also skirt around consumer law a bit.

PCCG… haven't used them but use their website for research, its great.

MSY.. I use for cheap or simple stuff.. so far no problems yet…. Very slow though on turn around for warranty on some items.. e.g. sony or WD stuff 4-6 weeks.

IStore. I use for things that are complex and I need a trusted opinion and some support or intend to buy hard drives. Ask for Richard, he's a good bloke to deal with. Don't go there if you've looking for just the lowest price, they are a service first PC store, though sometimes they do actually have the lowest price.

  • I know I have some less tech savvy friends to buy from PCCG as they find the msy website a pain to navigate. PART.pdf is not for everyone but I personally find it simple enough if you know what you want. Like others have mentioned PCCG also sell brands that MSY do not like EVGA.

  • Better availability.
    QOS
Eats into the savings when you have to order some parts from one shop and some from another.
MSY sucks and I don't trust them.

  • I buy from MSY, but if you have ever used their website or been to one of their stores it should be very apparent why people would rather go somewhere else.

I buy from PCCG because I buy online and I literally cannot figure out how the MSY website is supposed to work. It looks like it was designed in 1960

  • I buy from PCCG because I like good customer service. DOA part? replaced, done.

MSY for me because of price and location (NSW). Been going there for nearly a decade.

It's good for people like me and presumably you who know what they want and don't really need the customer service side of things.

For the average user, not so much.

  • MSY person here, however in the case of purchasing a CPU I usually go somewhere else such as mwave for that extra money for the better customer service. MSY doesn't exactly exude customer service.
