Difference between different tariffs i.e. per day vs per cycle

Just wondering if anyone knows if energy/gas companies that calculate the first x amount kj/watt per day if the company actually calculates it on a daily basis, or do they get the whole reading for that cycle and divide by the number of days. I'm looking for cheaper deals at the moment and they all have different structures.

My place is an old styled meter so I cant see how they can do daily readings as they'll need someone up here physically reading the meters every day.

  • No way the meter is read every day unless it's a smart meter.

    • Some Interval meters are read daily as well but its different to meters that are installed at our houses.

Industrial customers use interval meters which are connected to data loggers which reads meterread everyday. But meter reader comes every month or quarter to get data from data loggers.

  • +2

more importantly would be the daily connection charge - that can be a very large proportion of the bill

    • The supply charge is cheaper on one supplier by ten cents a day. But that supplier supposedly charges on a per day basis and gets cheaper the more you use only on the same day only. The other supplier charges less when you reach thresholds throughout the quarter.

      • have a read of the T&Cs, they probably have a different rate for old meters or upgrade the meter (something you may not want)

  • You could also try a price comparison website, such as Mozo - best results are with actual figures from your most recent electricity bill.
