  • I would say to get at least an Intel i5 & NVIDIA GTX 960 if you want to play it reasonably well but I guess that is out of your price range. There's a prebuilt one for $979 but that's roughly double what you wanted - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Intel-Core-i5-4460-3-2GHz-8GB-RAM…

Minimum though I guess you can settle for an i3 or AMD FX and a GTX 760.

  • Does this look like a good deal:

    i7 950
    GB xtreme x58
    6gb corsair vengeance ram
    gtx 580 vid card
    1tb seagate hdd
    600w power supply
    for $500.

I assume the i7 is good, vid card probably a bit under?

    • That is a first generation i7 so probably not as good as you would expect these days but for a budget yeah that seems like a good buy. Video card is a bit under but should be able to play it still.

The GTX 580 is not too much worse than the 660 which is listed as the minimum:
      http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-660-vs-GeForce-GTX-580

    • Ram and Gpu are below the minimum specs. It may still run, but I doubt it would run well.

    • Shouldn't be more than about $350 really. Based on secondhand value of individual components.

A GTX 580 is comparable to GTX 950. Just uses a lot more power.

Add SSD, more RAM. Maybe a Xeon 6-core upgrade if you know what you're doing.

  • Well an i5 6600 is around the $300 mark and the video card around $250 minimum.. already over the budget if bought new.
unless i can get them second hand i spose.

    • If you're going to build a new system next year, it's not worth to spend $500 now on a used system. I'd just build your new system now.

  • There are usually people selling second hand gaming rigs on Gumtree if you wanted to go that route. Could potentially save a lot of money.

or end up with a lemon

      • What do you mean a lemon? He is not buying a car. Apart from HDDs and to a lesser extend video cards/RAM, what really goes wrong with PCs? As long as it doesn't have any obvious corrosion on the MB, then it will be fine. Have been building gaming rigs for over 20 years now..

Actually some problems are not fully revealed until you have really given the PC a good test, for e.g problems with memory are often not revealed until your system has used up to the corrupted portion and then it BSOD's, or the GPU may have the tendency to artifact at high loads.

Which drives home the point why testing is important — underlying problems are not always apparent. But you might be to eager to buy and totally skip the testing phase…

I'm also running a Z68 Asrock Pro3 motherboard that at first glance, does not have issues, but when the weather is cold the computer refuses to turn on. This also cannot be tested by any normal means, but through long term use I identified the issue as solder joints in the mobo cracking and then shrinking when the temp is cold — causing shorts.

  • just buy a ps4/xbox one no use spending 500 and getting a shitty pc

    • My "shitty" pc below ran ultra, check out the below link to see how much better the "shitty" Pc looks than a PS4.
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gF4kgOvrUg

      • Both of those pcs cost more than $500 ea, which is the OP's budget.

I think that video proves that the OP should definitely get a PS4 if the doesn't want to spend more the $500 and the main purpose of the pc would be to play Battlefront.

        • Did you read the post below? my 5 year old pc with a 2012 GPU and 4GB ram runs Battlefront on ultra the same setting as the PC in the video.
I doubt you would pay anywhere near $500 for a 5 year old pc :)

        • When you said "below" I thought you meant the youtube link.

If what you said in your other comment, then it's worth getting a pc instead, though it's hard not to be skeptical considering some of your pc specs are below the minimum, and are good enough to run it on ultra. Seems like they would put a lot of players off by listing minimum specs which is more than enough to run the game on ultra.

          @ozhunter:

I never expected it to run it so well, I was hoping for high at best.
Overstating PC specs is getting common lately, I have played star citizen on the same rig and don't meet minimum requirements for it either.

As a guide I played the beta at an average 45+ fps on ultra with a 1080p monitor with an i5-750 CPU, 4 Gb RAM, HD7870 GPU
So take the stated requirements with a huge pinch of salt :)

  • I played the beta on an i5-750 8GB of RAM and a 560Ti HAWK (1GB).

Didn't waste any time benchmarking or fiddling with settings. But everything ran smoothly and looked amazing. The 'minimum' spec is pretty generous.
