Problems with Google - it freezes and doesn't produce search results.

For the last few days I have been having problems with Google on my desktop. I put in a search term, press enter and nothing happens. Has anyone else encountered this? Any idea as to how I can correct the problem? Life without Google isn't easy. Also it keeps converting over to google.com.au instead of staying on google.com which may or may not be part of the problem. All assistance gratefully received. Thank you in advance.

Update Friday 30 Oct: Thank you to all who offered advice. I have used all your suggestions and it does appear that Google is having some problems at the moment. My next step is to find out how to disable Google instant and to use a different browser while that continues to work.

    Malware. Google it.

    • Thank you. Shouldn't the virus protection (trend) prevent this? Do you know how I can fix it? I've already done a scan using trend. Lucky I had an ipad to "google it" :) Thank you again.

Your Google user licence fee may have expired ?

    • I can't tell if you are being funny. Is there such a thing?

  • Anything unusual other than Google?

    • Not that I've noticed. Things have slowed down a bit since Telstra replaced the 3G Mobile Broadband USB stick though. I put it down to 4G being the cause, taking up more data, but really what would I know?

I got the same thing happening I thought it was just me!

    • Glad to hear I'm not alone, but sorry to know others are having problems too.

Have you tried using other browsers? See whether it is isolated to only one browser.

    • Excellent suggestion. I use internet explorer out of habit. Tried Mozilla and it's working with that, no issues. That makes for a good work around. Maybe I have to start using that instead?

    Do some trials and errors.

If you think it's a Google search problem try conducting the same searches with another engine such as Bing.

If it's a Google Browser problem try running another browser like Firefox.

I really think it's a computer malware problem that affects the whole computer rather than just on Google Search.

Just tried some trial and error. Bing seemed fine, so did Firefox. Then I go back to Explorer and now it's working fine! Perhaps it is malware. It's only showing up on google search on Internet Explorer and now it's not even all the time. Last night it was ridiculously bad though.

First thing first. You need to ditch IE. No one uses it any more. Even Microsoft is getting rid of it. lolz.

Use Chrome or Firefox, they are the top 2. Other than that really can't help you much if it's some kind of malware. Good luck.

        • OK looks like I'm a bit behind the times… nothing new in that when it comes to IT stuff. I'll start on making a change to Firefox. Thank you for the advice.

        • Actually recent versions of IE is really nice, I was surprised too when I was using it because I was bored. But Edge on win10 is still faster.

        • To be fair, nobody uses IE because IE6 was beyond awful and the bad reputation stuck with IE ever since.

IE11 is fine, it's just that MS wants to get rid of bad rep + they want to add a lot of new things to the browser + they want to stop supporting some of the older technology (i.e. Active X, which is still, unfortunately, used). In short, they want to start fresh.

  • Are you on cable internet? Does this problem start around 6pm and continue for a few hours? I have noticed a problem with network congestion in the evenings. But then I could have picked up malware. My kids are always downloading stuff :/

    • No, don't I wish?! I have two choices in my part of the world - dial up or mobile, costly as it is. You may be right about the time though, it's all evening.

I just did a fresh windows reinstall the other day, and both prior to reinstall and afterwards, the problem occurred. I've put it down to network congestion on the local cable network, but I could be wrong. I'll run a few malware scans this afternoon.

    • Obviously something odd is happening if others are encountering issues too. Internet for me is via mobile. I have a relatively new (for a few months) Telstra USB stick that was a replacement and I can't even find a router that is compatible with it so the house no longer has wireless use in any room. I'm limited to the desktop computer otherwise it's rely on another cost burden via ipad cellular. I do wish I could get cable broadband or the nbn. I've noticed lots of mobile problems since the nbn and a new subdivision went in which encroached on our rural area. Maybe the infrastructure is cracking up under congestion… Thanks for the advice. Let me know how it goes when you run some scans.

It's a known issue in the last day or two. A workaround is to disable Google Instant…

    • This is exactly the problem! Thank you. Very much appreciated. I didn't see anything about Google instant in your link, but there is a lot of reading there. Looks like I need to google "how to disable Google instant". Thank you again.

  • use Bing.
