NBN AusBBS Price Hike - Is There a Better Option?

We've been with AusBBS for a while now and they've been great - great and reliable speeds, good customer support. We've been on the fastest speed (100/40 Mbps) with unlimited data, which was $100 per month.

But just a couple of weeks ago we get an email saying that our plan will increase in cost from December - to $175!

We've been looking at alternative services, but a lot of the low cost providers have absolutely abysmal reviews (http://www.productreview.com.au/c/internet-service-providers…). I want an ISP that delivers speeds close to what they promise (that doesn't slow to a crawl between 4pm-11pm) and is priced reasonably. Does anyone have have experience with a good ISP that they can suggest?

Any help appreciated :)

https://www.skymesh.net.au/ reportedly has very positive reviews on WP.

    • But its got data caps! But I've gotta admit, they're rather generous… And they also have affordable 100/100 plans! I'd be SOO excited to get these :)

    • +1 for Skymesh. They also can create a customised plan for your needs and they had a price-match offer where they price-match a competitors plans, speeds, quota, fees and all (I'm not sure if thats still on the table though)

Holy cow! thats a huge jump. I wonder how they justify it to their customers… I'd definitely vote with my wallet.

Maybe if you are so happy with them, you can consider going on a contract?

  • +1 for Skymesh. Also, consider Devoted NBN if you need unlimited plans or Skymesh is too expensive. PcMag Fastest ISP Ratings

I'm with Devoted NBN. I cannot say for sure the exact performance of their 100 mbps plan, but I'm on their 25/5 unlim plan and it's good enough for me.

A warning with Devoted — they do cap your speeds if you download excessively during peak periods (that is, 5pm to midnight), and while the capping is temporary you're limited to 1mbps for the duration. You can uncap yourself manually (for a max of 5 times per month).

I've been capped about three times so far in my 6 months of contract with them.

This is OK for light to medium users but for heavy users and speed enthusiasts who are expecting to download more than 50GB of data during peak periods as a routine daily, then Devoted NBN is not for you.

      • Good point. That is something you need to think about as well. From their official whirlpool page.

Will I be able to download 24/7 constantly at speeds like 80Mbps.
No, this is NOT considered acceptable residential use.
Offering services which allow users to download 80Mbps 24/7 would be extremely expensive. NBNco charges $20 per Mbps in CVC charges alone; you then have backhaul costs from the POI to the data-center as well as transit costs. If a user is constantly using these high speeds on the residential plan, the costs to provide these constant speeds is greater than the service charges on a regular residential plan.
We also offer 1:1 uncontended services for businesses that covers those additional costs.

  • WOuld SkyMesh price match the unlimited deal?

  • If I can ask a related question to the OP's : I've heard good things about Skymesh, but unfortunately they are not available in my building, which has just been wired for the NBN. I'd like to know what people recommend when Skymesh is not available?

Also Active8me have an offer for 250 GB of data on a 100/40 Mbps (fibre only) connection for $69.95 /month on a 12 month plan. Is that a good price, and are they a decent ISP? I think around 250 GB of data is probably the max we could use, at least for the next 12 months. That offer expires today, but I guess I could ask tomorrow if they would still do it.

    • That is a pretty good plan imo. MyNetFone, for example, gives 200 GB for similar NBN speeds for 79.95$. So, value wise, I'd definitely say this plan is excellent.
As for good they are, check out their product review page. I would not completely rely on this though as people are usually more vocal when they have complaints. Check out Whirlpool as well to get a better idea.
Hopefully, they let you sign up for their deal. Feel free to PM me if you need more help. Cheers.
