Is that extra 2 Gig consumed by the ads?

  • +1

Wow ill be interested to hear people's reaction to this

    • just install an adblocker like adfree

Do we need to get their sim card as well?

    • +5

Um, you need to be a Lebara user, so you should have their SIM card

        so that is the negative..

their rates might not be as good.

        • +6

How else would this work? Of course you need to have their sim to get their data.

  • Sounds delightful

Reminds me of Kazaa & the rise of PC spyware in exchange for "free" programs….

surely an ad blocker will thwart this

    • Exactly what I was thinking.
Program the ad blocker to activate in daytime hours and deactivate overnight so it continues to pull ads and keep any monitoring system happy.

I wouldn't count on it. Ad blocker works by internally looping known advertising server DNS addresses so that it doesn't download anything because it cannot find it. They may only grant the extra data if they detect a certain level of traffic going to these servers at frequent times. So they may not grant the extra data if they cannot detect periodic download of advertising data because of those ad blockers.

    • Not if it's some app doing it. It won't be just ads in the browser.
I'm guess if blocked the 2 gigs will be charged and not free.

    • it kinda does, it doesn't show the ad but it still shows the frame where the ad would go, a bit annoying when you unlock your phone.

Saw this yesterday at Current affair or similar show…

Reminds me more of freenet or whatever that dial up service as circa 2000 that offered free fifteen minutes of dial up Internet and ads

    • +1

I had those, an entire ad bar across a 14" screen, along with all the pay per click ads.

Holy balls i cant believe someone still remembers freenet. Thought it was the future of internet

What about GoConnect? Anyone ever use that?

        • Yep that was the one I was thinking of!

        • hahah i remember using that lol
How did it work again? getting old…

    • That was awesome. I was working on the road at the time, so it was cool to be able to plug into the motel phone line and get me some internets away from home.

similarly, I also recall a phone service from about 15 years ago where you could call a local (1800?) number, listen to an ad for 15secs, then dial international or mobile number for free.
Can't recall their name though - only lasted a handful of months.

    • There was a program which hid the Freenet app from being always ontop and I used to get hours long connection on Freenet back in the days.

I still remember GoConnect and the alien associated with the company

Those were the days of free dialcup :D

Getting all nostalgic, thinking about the AllAdvantage program of the year 2000. Remember when you were paid to look at ads at the bottom of your screen?

  • Haha I'm not going to get this shit. Would be so annoying for just 2GBs.

  • I've got the app installed just to see how intrusive….it doesn't do much to be honest, I can't see any ads popping up. I am not topping up though as I have lots of Groupon vouchers, so I can't test if I'll get the freebie. I did get an sms from them saying I'll get the free internet if I top up.
