Apple TV @ Officeworks $88

170

Hey Peeps,

Just got this price in. So not sure if this is the cheapest price around. haven't had time to check, just though I'd post this ASAP, in case anyone was interested.

So if you know of a better deal post in comments as usual.

Cheers

  • Probably a price match to the Harvey Norman deal listed earlier today.

    • Ha ha, oh most likely then, yer . Did not know about that ! 😋 Cheers for the enlightenment 👍🏻

Whats with the remote not having any buttons :|

    • There's a number of commands that use combinations, long presses or order of button presses to open up different functions.

I prefer it to having a bunch of buttons you'll never use

    • suggest maybe look on YouTube, for a run down on how the Apple TV works with the remote. Probably easier to view the explanation of it not having numerical buttons. If that's what you're referring to ??

  • New Apple TVs 32Gb and 64Gb models due for release any time soon.

This looks like a fire sale of older stock given the model number.
(Also, the remote on the new model is a dead giveaway.)

Nice price but the new ones are feature-rich by comparison.

The new models are feature rich but also much more expensive. 32 GB ($269) and 64 GB ($349)

    • New Apple TV is available since… yesterday. :)

  • New Apple TV is already out for Pre-orders

Far out. I thought the price increase between iphones was hefty. I understand these have better specs and greater functionality, but that's a BIG increase

      Apple TV3 $109
      Apple TV4 $269 32gb
      Apple TV4 $349 64gb

and when you can buy PS4 or XBOX around the same price, why would you buy this?

        Am I missing something? :P

        • When I first bought the Apple TV a few years back for $99 I thought it was a great deal and very good value for money.
I guess they decided to increase the price based on new features. I don't think the storage enhancements make up for the price hike, but I did expect the Apple TV to cost $150-200 initially (a few years back when in the market for it) so i was pleasantly surprised.

          The AUD hasn't helped either.

        • If you're already heavily invested into the Apple ecosystem, then that's what you'd mainly get it for. As the new Apple TV can run apps and games natively . Like having a huge iPad on your tv I guess.

        • They are now Apps for the Apple TV, like the iPhone and iPad.
          Single and multiplayer games too.

        • @Filster83:
I don't understand why people would want to commit 64gb worth of data to such a media player. I mean, haven't we moved past that? 1 server -> as many devices connect as you like, etc.
This is purely to trick those fools who are already as you say 'invested' heavily in Apple. They'll buy anything. The more expensive the more desirable.

        • @Marto: the data storage isn't for video/audio media. It's for games/apps etc.

          @Chuppa:
64GB worth of apps and games? Lol. C'mon. Who plays games on these things anyway? They're rubbish. And we all know the apps don't take any storage at all… But hey, Apple will certainly take your money if you're willing to pass it over.

      • Crazy prices. Wtf. Might be ordering this one from the US.

        • With the stuffing around and fees you'd have to go through with a forwarder, not sure you'd actually save that much money… Unless you have someone over there who can simply buy it and post to you.

        • I agree with Martin.

A straight conversion of $149 will get you to $206AU, I would then factor at least 20-$30US to get freight forwarding sorted out. Then you are only talking around $20 price difference, hardly worth the hassle.

        • Probably be easier to get a DJ gift card at 10% off and get it here…

        • @kearnsy: you forget to add GST. So basically it's just better to buy it here.

        • @ntb:

Well you don't get charged GST if your importing (well at least not anyway). My pricing was assuming that you purchased from a state in the US that does not have sales tax and used a freight forwarder.

  • Been meaning to get one of these, and waiting for a good price (I remember once seeing it on Ozb for just over $60). I find my xbox 360 annoying for netflix and I still need to plug my macbook into the TV via a HDMI if I want to stream.

This is the most current model right now yeah, and soon to be replaced? Do you know whether it will continue to be sold once the new ones are out? Reading the other comments about the price for the new versions, I am certain I don't want one of those, no matter what extra features it has, that's way too expensive!

    • For Netflix? Get a Chromecast for 50 bucks!

      • Can I stream from my macbook with chromecast?
Plus, I like having a remote. You need to use your phone for chromecast right?

        • yeah phone is the best way to control a chromecast, no remote, can use also computer or tablet

Chromecasts work best with streaming things like netflix and youtube, can also send your screen but it isn't the best, Apple Tv would be around the same at that I'd say

        • @Woodyg22:

Thanks. So chromecast might not stream everything as well by the sounds of it. Watching movies / shows streamed from my macbook via iTunes worked well with an apple tv at my mates house.

        • @Dan83: If you use Plex instead of iTunes it'll work great

        • @Woodyg22: Thanks for the info man.

  • The new ones are out on the Apple site and this one still for sale at $109, so this is a good price. The new one is still only 1080p and as for games they will not have the depth or complexity of what's available on PS4 or XB1 so not really comparable.

  • Picked one up this arvo to replace the mini in the lounge room which only ran plex home theatre. Now the kids TV room and the lounge room run ATV3 with the trailer hack for plex/plexconnect. Netflix client is decent enough too.

Airplay for the surfing (turn it on portugal) and for things like coachella and glastonbury youtube feeds from desktop that never work through native clients.

Decent device even when you're not invested in Apple media eco system at all, as we are not.

  • Would this be a suitable replacement for a WDTV Live Streaming Media Player. The WDTV keeps losing connection to my windows shares

  • Prefer to get a RPi2 for half the price.

  • Bought apple tv3 at gumtree for $70 last week aregh

  • Looks like Officeworks no longer has it at $88 but Harvey Norman still do so should be able to price match Officeworks down :)
