  • I'm upset that I grabbed the DV6 a few weeks ago for my girlfriend for $1199, though it does have some cool features that are missing from the DV7 and came with windows 7 pre-installed.

I picked up this model of the DV7 last year and it's been great. I got the free upgrade to windows 7 (note that you won't get the option for the 64 bit of windows 7 through the HP upgrade, though I think you can use the product key provided to install the 64 bit version if you download the iso for windows 7 64 bit or have a friend with the DVD).

  • Hmm the other reason other than Vista that this is cheap is it is not Corei7.

If you are buying a premium laptop now you will buy Corei7 - it's 3 physical cores and 6 logical cores (vs 2 cores in the Core2 Duo) - plus it's faster and uses less power so you get better battery life.

    The Dv7-3006tX is an example.

    • He means to say 4 Physical cores and 8 Virtual ones. It beats core 2's in every aspect except when utilising only 2 cores in which case it is only about 85%-95% as good as a core 2 duo.

The 820QM and 920QM chips beat them hands down however they aren't very price efficient right about now. Wait at least 1/2 a year for the 820QM to drop into a reasonable price range.

      • The core i7 on display at Dick SMith George Street shows 6 virtual cores only in Windows task manager - is that because it's running Vista Home Premium only?

ALso crazy these machines come with 4gb RAM and 1gb video card but a 32 bit OS so you can only use 3gb RAM

  • The DV7 3006TX is ~$1950 on staticice though. I'd be curious to know if you could buy an i7 for around $1200 (any brand).

    • You can get the 3006tx for $1700 if you bargain at Dick Smith Sydney (George St)
