Mirroring an iPad to a Touch Screen

Hi guys, I was watching The Block tonight and one of the couples bought a product that mirrored an ipad to the kitchen splashback.

Now I didn't realise that you could mirror and maintain touch screen capabilities, does any one know how they have done this?

That is the company, but $7k seems a little excessive, I want to try and do the same, the ozbargain way.

(That's before I even get to the issue of getting a touch screen to work through 8mm thick glass)

Anyway have any ideas? A quick websearch resulted in confusion.

  • You will need something like this Touch Foil that will detect the finger strokes. Then it is a matter of deciding what type of display you want to use, ie LCD, projector etc. I've seen normal computer monitors being converted to touch screen using films like this.

    touch screen monitor?

mount to a wall or built into a coffee table

  • I think you two are underestimating the complexity of it. You can't just get external touch inputs into an ipad. That's problem number one.

So I've come up wiht some solutions.

    Regular bright monitor

    Large pane of glass

Cheap touch foil: (two points should be fine)

Then this card which from what I gather fools the jail broken ipad into thinking it is hooked up in carplay mode.

Or am I on the wrong track?

    • Prolly also recommend trying it on android instead of iPad!

      • It's a consideration, but the iPad experience and AirPlay intergration is a winner

    • The question was on mirroring the ipad and not using the ipad itself. So I was thinking more of connecting the ipad to a computer that would then mirror the ipad's screen and display it on a LCD/projector display hence the Touch Foil method above.

  • It depends what you want it for. If I was going to use something like this it would be for projecting things like recipes onto the backboard, in which case I would look at using a reasonably priced projector that you put under the cupboard with wireless connectivity back to the iPad

No, I want to replicate this exact product, not some half assed bodge job.

      • No worries, I won't bother giving you any responses in the future.

          Not a personal attack

        • @thorton82: "not some half assed bodge job" doesn't sound like a compliment.

  • Some clues on how it works in the description:

"Two-way full remote touchscreen control of the iPad via the splashback"

  • I emailed custom gadz about the circuit board the have for touch screens, but apparently it only works with touchscreens in cars. So I'm guessing the touchscreen in cars is a completely different technology to the one they used on the block?.

    • Pfff, no, they just don't want you building your own
