Haiti Emergency Appeal

On Sunday 31st January, Luna Park Sydney will open late from 6pm – 10pm, especially to raise funds for victims of the Haiti earthquake.

All Sydney-siders are encouraged to join in the fun on their favourite rides in aid of the worthy cause.

Go Wild Unlimited Rides Passes will be sold at HALF-PRICE on the night and all rides revenue will go to the “Save the Children” charity for the Haiti appeal. So too will any profit from the sale of food and beverages, sideshow games and merchandise on the night.

Luna Park staff are proving there are big hearts behind the Face by generously donating their time to work free of charge on the night.

Jeremy Nance, Marketing Manager for Luna Park Sydney says, “Whether you wish to re-live your childhood memories or create new ones with your children and grandchildren, this is the perfect opportunity to come down and have a great time at Luna Park, knowing you’re doing your bit to help those in such dire need.”

So gather your friends together and grab a rides pass at just $22.50 for a night of unlimited fun! Just for Haiti.

The special offer ride passes will go on sale at 6pm at all Luna Park ticket booths. Call 02 9922 6644 for further information.

  • Wow this is a very decent thing for Luna park to do, especially on a Sunday during school holidays. This should be one of those highlighted deals.

    • It is nice of them, but school went back today.

Nice gesture… too bad their rides are crap. :P

If i wanted to support Haiti, there are much better ways to do it than this…

This has lowered my opinion of luny park

    • Really? If you donate $22.50 to Haiti thats great! The same $22.50 goes to Haiti if you buy a ticket at Luna park at this time, how does this lower your opinion of luna park? Im in Perth I have never been to Luna park but it seems pretty good of them.

        • I agree with you kimmik. Companies always try and jump on the donation bandwagon. I seem to recall Woolworths offering to give all proceeds to the Black Saturday bushfires. Either way; as long as it is not a selfless (cash) donation it will not be tax deductible. Hence if you are currently paying 30% tax, your donation is crippled as a result.

I don't understand why their employees should work without pay. If Luna Park were wholeheartedly into this Haiti cause, they'd pay their employees out of their own pocket for the whole FOUR hours. Imagine calling someone to work between 6-10 on that night. I'd rather get paid and donate a portion of it to charity.

    • Yeh I certainly feel for the employees. It's not fair on them to ask them to work for four hours without pay.

    • Are you sure the employees are being forced to work without pay? I don't think that's legal.

I think this is a pretty good deal and I'm considering going!

Thank you to all who expressed their views that I unpublished. The discussion appears to have gotten out of hand. So I've unpublished most of the comments.

However, I've listed below some, if not all of the key points and added a few of my own to answer what people were raising.

    1. Not everyone is comfortable with donating in this manner and feel Luna Park will have an agenda that is not just charitable contribution (publicity and more)
    2. Others are comfortable with Luna Park's offer

    3. Differences for the individual, between paying a donation and buying the ticket include:
a- night out at Sydney Luna Park
b- ticket is not tax deductible unlike a donation

    4. Luna Park will probably get benefits from this
      a- public good will
b- tax donation from all the tickets purchased
c- good will with stall vendors, who can still get paid wages etc (it is profits they donate, not revenue)

    5. Donations to Haiti may still be the same as if all those people donated.

    6. Donations to Haitia will be increased if this offer attracts people, who are interested in the rides but weren't about to donate.

    7. It is reported that staff of Luna Park will be working for free that night

    8. It is not said that staff are being forced to work for free.
    9. It is uncertain if there would be any pressure on employees who did not give up their time. (eg peer group pressure, how it would look to management if one refused to give up one's time)

Actually, the one point that is open to discussion is the tax refund from the donation being in Luna Park's name.

If you know tax or case law, perhaps work for the ATO or an Australian accounting group, you might want to comment if you understand that Luna Park cannot get the tax refund. Preferably with citation to the relevant text or journal.

If you work for Luna Park and know that Luna Park will not be asking for the tax refund, you might want to comment.

    That's about it

Thanks for your time foundit. You've given us a very cool-headed third party view of this matter.

Confirmed that the Luna park employees were working for free. Dont know about stall workers.

My friend cant be sure if they were under pressure to work tonight, though he thinks its possible.

Does anyone know how many people visited tonight? i.e. the size of their donation.
