Belkin Wemo Starter Kit $101 Extra Bulbs $34 at DSE (Price Match Bunnings for Additional 10%)

110

Dick smith has most of the wemo range on sale. Bunnings now stocks these so you can price match for an extra 10% off.

The Belkin app kinda sucks but the hardware is good. I recommend the 3rd party app for android called wemomanager it has tasker integration so its really powerful.

If you just want wifi controllable power sockets the wemo's are good but I recommend checking about the broadlink SP2 on aliexpress. They are a bit cheaper and I reckon they are just as good as the wemo's. They also have tasker integration with a 3rd party app. I have tried a lot of this kinda thing over the last 3-4 months and I think the broadlink and wemo stuff is the best.

If you're an iOS user, hold off on buying gear like this until it supports HomeKit. I fitted out the house with Philips Hue bulbs and now I have to buy a new hub. If you're not fussed, buy all the old technology cheap!

I haven't looked into HomeKit much but if its anything like the rest of the Apple range it will cost twice as much and have half the functionality.

on the other hand I wouldn't want to be putting low quality electrical gear around the house… I don't think you will find Apple will differ on their quality standards with this. happy to pay the little extra instead of my house possibly burning down.

I think you should be pretty safe with the Belkin stuff.

      • HomeKit not physical hardware. It's a technology created by Apple to help all of your IOT devices work more effectively and most importantly, together. (yes IFTTT does this to a certain extent, but it is unbearably slow)

        • To achieve HomeKit compatibility hardware should include new identity chip.
So the only way to add HomeKit compatibility is new hardware revision.
Philips Hue bridge is an example.

IFTTT is a must have app for any wemo users. Definitely check it out.

I found IFTTT to be really unreliable. Has it improved lately?

      • As good as our NBN. ;)

      • I use it constantly for lifelogging and it has been perfect so far. I've been using it for a few years now.
