Is this as good as the 'Commando 8' unit my friend cosmo can get for me?

  • Each year am curious about these portable things… living in a rent apartment each summer wish i had one… hmmm

I've got a basic Mistral portable air-conditioner that I bought from Big W many moons ago. It will cool a bedroom reasonably, but even at full tilt it will never get the room cold like an in-wall or split system air-conditioner will.

It's quite noisy, but it's not necessarily a bad thing as it'll block out any background noise :) Emptying out the water regularly gets a pain too - I found that with a big bucket, it'd be nearly full after running it overnight.

Having said that, anything is an improvement in the Queensland summer so if you're renting I'd certainly give it thought. If I was renting in future I'd certainly consider buying one again.

Might be worth having a read of this if you're considering a portable unit:

    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2337112

Issues appear to be the vacuum they create, higher than advertised noise & having to empty the water tank.

Considering window units are under $500 they may be a better choice.

    • Ugh… yeah… conclusion i came to before. But, window unit not an option whilst renting. Beer + fan it is for another summer i suspect.

      • Why not suggest you cover $200 (or however much you feel is appropriate) if you're going to be there for the forseeable future? Even offer to find the landlord the best deal on an a/c unit utilising your OzB skills ;)

  • Hmm, $73 delivery (to Perth). Maybe not.

Had to register an account just to warn you guys.

I bought this aircon 2 years ago (230AUD shipped). It seems to be very inefficient (because of single-hose design), inconvenient (requiring water tank emptied every 2 hours), and poorly made (it died after 1.5 years).

Close to $1/hour in electricity costs to run. More if you live in SA. I recommend the brand Nobocool from Harvey Norman, best brand I had but noisy as hell.

    • +2

3.5kW is the "cooling power", I'm not sure what that means but input power is 1.05kW, which shouldn't be $1/hour

      • Is there an easy way to figure out approx how much an air conditioner will cost to run?

        • Power Input Cooling 1050W
          Power Input Heating 1050W

uses 1050w of power. times that by however many cents your power costs and you have your number.

based off a cost of 33c/kwh using this calculator https://www.sa.gov.au/topics/water-energy-and-environment/en…

          Power rating(watts)
          1050

Usage per day (hours / mins)
          24 / 00

          Daily running cost
          $8.32

          Quarterly
          running cost
          $756.76

not even close to $1/hr unless your paying close to $1/hwh

        • @nosdan: great, thanks heaps, very helpful! Especially as I'm in SA too. I'm about to put in a couple of units (thanks to ozbargain) and was curious as to how much they'll cost to run

  • Is there such a thing as a twin hose portable air con unit sold in oz?

    • You mean with an "inside bit" and an "outside bit" (compressor) that goes out on the balcony?

Bunnings had them a few summers ago, I wished I'd paid the extra and bought one of those when we were renting an apartment, instead of buying a similar unit to this Kogan. It was so noisy and barely adequate for a single room.

      • Yes, this is the same concept as the one bunnings was selling years ago. It was only $200 or so more than the crappy portables. Perfect for renters. Maybe as summer comes bunnnings or masters will get some…

    This is their regular price

I bought one of these last year.
@edit may not be exactly the same unit.
Wife did not like the idea of a portable unit.
Still in box in the shed.
If anyone in Melbourne (to pickup) interested … let me know

Funny, I thought Kogan was the expert at blowing hot air.

      • Kogan blows pretty hard, but it's certainly not air. (Excuse the pun ;))

    • +1

I bought the equivalent of the 10,000 last year and it died after three months of normal usage.

Used one of these a few months ago, even on the lowest degree, it wasn't that cold and quite loud, it's not exactly a power saver either.

    • +1

Be careful, I heard terrible reviews from other ozbargain threads

    • Can anyone suggest good air conditioners please?

We live in Cranbourne, VIC. Recently built a house and I felt $6500 (builder quote) for evaporative cooling is very expensive.

looking for portable air conditioners and if none of them are good, then split systems. thinking will have one installed in our ensuite (2.1 KW??) and at a later stage one in living area.

      Budget: no more than $600

      • +1

Does $600 include install? No split system can be purchased and installed for that price.

      • Think your looking for ozquote.com.au or perhaps try 'find me a bargain' in the forums.

      • A/C in the ensuite (before anywhere else), that's novel.

      • You live in your ensuite most??

Wouldn't you put an A/C in the loungeroom first?

      • You can have either:
        the system,
        Or the install.
        But not both. Ok.

  • -1

all comments welcome :) would wanna ensure we get good night sleep and hence thought would be worth having it in ensuite. Reg: $600 (it excludes installation). i am asking here (and not ozquote :)) as I generally get honest, REAL review about a product here :)
