No point buying if you aren't going to pay them the monthly fee and switch to them.. not really a bargain..?

    More like bait.

  • Kogan and Vodafail together seriously. You couldn't wish for worse. Screams desperate

Kogan can't be trusted to do the right thing go direct to Vodafone if you really have to. If you go through Kogan your just adding a problem into the mix.

I was with kogan before and now with vodafone- never had any issues with either.

  • Could be useful for those who want to port their number out from their Telco (to Kogan) & back to same Telco - keeping number, but activating on new ($1 Telstra etc) starter pack. Cheaper than using $2 starter packs & only 5c to try. (Took less than 3 hours to port out & back on Christmas Eve with free Vodafone SIM.)

    • m on Vodafone prepaid combo $50 but bought on sale for $25. can I port to this sim and then back to voda $50 combo prepaid starter kit (can get for $25)?

      • That probably won't work (I've never tried it) as it is within same Telco, just a different reseller. That's a good deal.

Try Kmart - there were $2 Optus SIMs for 10c a while back. But check expiry date! Sometimes minor telcos will mail out free SIMs.

  • Last time it cost me $20 only to have it cancelled after a month of use. No refund offered either.

A good offer and will be paying for a wole year in advance for my son, $24 a month and on Vodafone 3G is still pretty good, did testing today by turning off 4G between all my stops going from Brisbane to the Gold Coast, and averaged 9-14mbps the whole time on 3G, it was very much usable and perfect for a kid, web was not as snappy as 4G but very much usable, YouTube though streamed perfectly fine in most cases, there was one area where it struggled a bit, turned on 4G and it come good (Not sure what the go was there).

This is also fully endorsed by Vodafone, the difference here is that there is no Middle Man who brought a crap storm on Kogan last time, this is a deal between Kogan and Vodafone directly, which means they have much better control.

Vodafone have said in various press releases that they will make 4G available early next year, the issue I have is that they have not stated if it will cost more (AKA Amaysim charging more for it when they finally turned it on with Optus).

And knowing the Optus network quite well having worked closley on it for 2 years when I was workign for them, I can say hand on heart that Vodafone has now caught up, and possilbly in many cases, has surpassed them. It will only get better with them now tapping into TPG/PIPE/AAPT vast FIBRE network, I have little problems with them even when going out to Toowoomba on a monthly basis and further out, yeah their coverage is no where near Telstra's but you do pay for what you get I guess.

I think Kogan will do alright this time, and given they also sell devices as well albeit grey market stuff, it might work in their favour if they can win over public trust.

Just my thoughts, or it could go bad… Willing to take a risk again, last time they did give refunds and I would expect them to honour it again.

  • Has anyone tried this for porting purposes? I looked through their offers and I can't find any prepaid PAYG plans, do they allow you to complete the porting process without signing up to one of those monthly prepaid plans?

  • +1

    Yes, i did.
you can port into Kogan without paying for any plans (simply close the browser at 7th step when you asked to choose a plan. your port in request would still go through)

give it a day and then port out of kogan into your preferred operator.

    I did a Voda > Kogan > Voda.

Had a prob, where in the "billing validation table" in kogan for my number wasnt updated and hence all the kogan to voda port requests failed.
I had kogan update the details and then get the final port into voda successful.

    • 5c confirmed porting with delivered SIM. Good to know.

Porting by picking up a SIM is cheap & easy at the moment.

I picked up an Optus $2 SIM for 5c @Kmart, so didn't try this. That's the first time I've paid for a SIM to port my number in many years. There are sometimes free SIMs from minor providers.

Porting to a bargain prepaid offer (using until benefits run out), then back to original Telco to preserve your phone number is another option.

Coles Express ATM offer is currently a free $10 Optus SIM, if you can find stock. Good for 5 x $2 days of data & calls. SIM I picked up expires 1/12/16, so good to keep for next port.

Coles & Woolies have offered $1 Telstra $30 Starter Packs in the last year.

Ported 2 days ago from Telstra to Woolies Mobile - took 30 min.
That $30 SIM was offered on some EDR Cards for $1 including free $20 Gift Card for activating :-) So will use for 30 days, buy free groceries, then port number back to Telstra - not bad for $1 :-)
