Current Australian pricing of Mobile handsets

Its been well discussed that Australia pays significantly more for mobile handsets than the US does. That’s an ongoing argument that is well publicized and not really the focus of this thread.

However last week I was looking to buy outright, an unlocked Low to Mid point Android handset. During my research I stumbled across the Harvey Norman New Zealand site which had the LG Spirit 4G on sale for $188 and the Sony E4g for $199. These are of course NZ dollars.
Around town (Perth WA) the LG Spirit 4G sells for $244 and the Sony E4g for $239 Aust dollars

As of today
$1 US = $1.47 NZ
$1 US = $1.37 AU
Given our exchange rate I would have thought NZ should be pay more than OZ for the same product. So unless I have got it wrong, I think this is worth opening up for debate …. are we being ripped off again?

  • Maybe they were having a sale and the Australian ones were at normal price? It's hard to tell from just those two price points.

  • When I was in NZ a couple of years ago, I found their outright mobile phones is a lot more expensive than in Australia, maybe this one is a specials?

    • My general experience has been that phones (and other electronics) are more expensive in NZ too.

  • Could also be a tax factor, maybe there are lower taxes in NZ? I've never been so I wouldn't know.

    • +1

GST in NZ is 15% - so, no.
