What to Do! Change Plan, or Change Provider

Been with TPG for quite a while, had a few connection/speed problems mainly due to the quality (lack of) with Telstra lines and exchange.

But now, TPG are saying I used my allowance up in a week! Never had that before.
I'm only on an allowance of 10GB per month but usually no slow down until the last few days of the month - but nowhere near as slow as at the moment. It's woeful!

TPG can't give me ADSL2+ as they don't have the ability at our exchange.

Some other companies can (such as Telstra - obviously & Dodo).

A neighbour has Dodo and never had any problems with them, but I often see others with "issues".

The only thing TPG have offered is to go up a plan to one with 200GB, still on off net at $59.99

Dodo are offering ADSL2+ unlimited for $59.99

I won't touch Telstra.

Anyone have any ideas?

  • I hear smoke signals are making a comeback but you'll have to check the NBN roll out schedule given it seems to take them years to roll out existing technologies. Other than that I'd just upgrade - not knowing how much you currently pay for your service makes it hard to determine the worth of the upgrade options. You say you'd only use approx 20GB per month … not sure if you're a "target" for ISPs really. That is to say there aren't too many people looking for ADSL2+ with the intention of using such a small amount of data.

    • I keep usage down at the moment, knowing I only have a small allowance but that is changing (partly with daughter using more) as I'm looking at using things like Netflix (which isn't possible on current plan).

NBN, I don't think I'll be around in 50 years!

Currently paying $50 a month, upgrade with TPG is 200GB for $60. I just wish I could get ADSL2+ ! (but not with T(h)elstra)

      • Yeah that sucks. I take it you're semi rural. I'd say 200GB a month would be okay including Netflix usage. Sounds like you might not be streaming in HD given your bandwidth limitations of ADSL. I suppose Unlimited is more than 200GB though. Maybe switch if you find you're going to consume more than 200GB. If you manage to sync @ 8mbps you could theoretically go through about 2.5TB per month at 100% utilisation.

        • Thanks for the info!

all providers are as bad as each other

they promise the world, and they do deliver…..but VERY SLOWLY !!!!

We have Internode and haven't had any issues, yet. God knows with all the ISPs getting consolidated. The best bet is go look at the Whirlpool forums and check out the comments and plans. Do not go with "dead as a Dodo".

    • ▲▲▲As above.
      Do not go with Dodo.

    • I'm with ClubTelco and speeds are terrible, with constant drop-outs. They keep telling me there's nothing wrong, and nothing they can do. I also have to pay a yearly $80-100 'membership' fee on top of the ADSL. Changing when I have time at the end of the year.

      • Been with them for years..unlimited adsl2+ $40 per month 20mbps all day, every day..very happy with them, shame they don't do NBN.

  • won't touch Telstra

    Any reason.
On phone and Internet package, 500G for $80 per month cable. I am very happy.

    • Plenty of reasons, had enough problems with them. I'm not paying a premium to go with them.
They can't even fix our cables properly - always patching up. One of the guys who came a couple of years ago told me the cables are under water and corroded.

  • I'm in exactly the same boat. 3 days into billing cycle, I've been shaped and web browsing is just unusable. Ended up upgrading plan - I was on $49 10G (+40G only available for a few hours in middle of night) - was always fine up until this month. Spend an extra $10pm to get 100G… should surely get more than a few days into month before being shaped to dial-up.

    • Seems crazy doesn't it?
We didn't change a thing either. We were away until 5th so nothing used in the first few days of the month.

      • Have they changed the way the calculate? I notice for off-net they count uploads too - have they always done that??

  • Could it have been Microsoft Windows downloading the Windows 10 update in the background that accounted for the high data usage in a particular month?

    • I went backover after installing windows 10 when it first came out - messed everything up something rotten. So I don't think mine will have updated.

  • Check out exetel - http://www.exetel.com.au/broadband/adsl-standalone

I was stuck with ridiculously expensive off-net tpg or iinet until someone posted an exetel deal here a year or so back

    • What it's offering me is more expensive :/

  • Sounds like you are being ripped off, TPG have an unlimited plan for $59.99.

    Edit

Maybe this has something to do with it:

TPG can't give me ADSL2+ as they don't have the ability at our exchange.

    • That's right, unlimited plan for $59.99 is on ADSL2+

      • Yeah I left TPG when ADSL2+ came out coz I couldn't get it and I couldn't stand others getting more for less :) … I always come back though after I calm down :)

        • Get's to me too!
Ridiculous that we can't get it these days.

Australia is so far behind with internet connections and speeds!

  • I am in the same boat. I have TPG off-net. They had not shaped me in years, although this month they decided to.

I need to find an off-net alternative ASAP. Want to keep everything the same, i'm connected to a RIM.

    • They claimed there had been a fault in the system where it wasn't shaping, that was supposed to have been "sorted" this month. "But don't worry, we won't charge you for excess usage from the past", they said. pffttt damn right you won't!

      • was good while it lasted.

Need to find alternative offnet. Also, I don't trust Dodo and Exetel plan checkers, they seem to show the ultra cheap plans, then you signup and it's more when they find out you're on a telstra only exchange.

dang it. I thought I was already being shaped. The internet doesn't work with this shaping!
