Need Help Choosing a Latitude 14 5000 series 4th gen intel core i5 from Dell Outlet

I want to buy a laptop for general use, web browsing, using word, powerpoint etc. I would like it to be lightweight and not too bulky, it would need to have a optical drive.

I'm not good with at computer specs, so I need some help. I thought an older latitude 14 priced at 579 looks to be a good bargain. http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/product… last one on the page.
Here's the specs:
Latitude 14 5000 Series 4th Gen Intel Core i5-4210U Processor (1.7 GHz, 3M Cache, Dual Core)
8GB Dual Channel DDR3L 1600MHz (4GBx2) 500GB (5400 rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit English
8X DVD+/-RW Media Bay Drive
Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 802.11ac/a/b/g/n 2x2 + Bluetooth 4.0 LE Half Mini Card
Intel Integrated HD Graphics 4400
Qualcomm Gobi 3G/42Mbps DW5570(e) Mini Card (SIM not included) for Windows 8
9-cell (97Wh) Lithium Ion battery
65W AC Adapter, 3-pin
No OS Media Included. Unit has minor cosmetic wear.
I tried comparing it to the current, only major difference I saw is the 9 cell battery, would it make it laptop heavier?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Yea the bigger battery would make it heavier. It's annoying how they don't provide a link to the product.

    It's 2.1kg

You could get a brand new 5th model for $679. http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/latitude-e5450-laptop/pd?r…

Think you mean $779.00 AUD from AU Dell.. That's the US site. $579 is an absolute steal! It even has integrated broadband modem.

The 9 cell battery will make your laptop heavier, but it'll last you a long time. This laptop does need a big battery because the ordinary 6 cell battery has very mediocre life — only around 5 hours of use.

You can buy a second battery and lighten the load by attaching the standard size battery, but it'll cost you $60-80 from Dell.

Another laptop you could look out for is the Latitude 12 5000 series. I got a quote on this about 3 weeks ago

but I couldn't decide in time and missed the purchase. This option is good if you want a light device, althoug battery capacity is small (only 3 cell).

Thanks scrimshaw, I choose the latitude over inspiron for its performance and lightweight. Thank you for the suggestion, I will pass on 12 inch laptop, it's too small for me. Here goes my first dell outlet purchase, fingers crossed.

  • cant go wrong with this model, I am currently typing from latitude 5k series and very happy with the purchase.
