I am tempted to get one of these, but waiting for the Sony Z5. Although this is probably the more stylish phone, I am wondering whether from a longevity perspective the Z5 will get me more years.

I've still got my Samsung S3 4G from almost 3 years ago.

    • From my experience and a few other friends' Sony experience, I'll highly doubt that Sony will outlast LG. My Sony broke 1 day after warranty expired (1 year)….

      • +2

Not to mention this phone is 1/2 the price of a Sony Z5!

      • +1

Nowadays it's more about how a phone is used and 'luck' really… there's no true durable phones anymore, no more Nokia 3310.

      • hey coolbbb888,
my z2 came with two years warranty, purchased locally at jb, so you may still have some luck getting it repaired.

    • Sony would definitely be better supported custom rom wise and also get more updates.

This phone won't get any updates past marshmallow and has pretty much zero dev support.

Also the Sony would is also water resistant so more likely to survive if dropped into the water.

      • I think the updates side of thing certainly is a concern. The S3 hasn't had updates for my model since 4.3 (hence need to upgrade to work with the Galaxy Gear 2 Classic when it comes out).

I'm not happy with the latest Nexus, and extended support for the Z5 is an attraction.

A colleague has a Z1 and is quite happy with it, but it obviously is getting longer in the tooth now too.

I'm not too concerned about price at this point as I know the G4 is older and price point is lower, but I'd rather pay for something which will last me 3+ years, even if support lasts 18-24 months.

I could always go down 3rd party ROM route if I need anything beyond that.

        • I'm still rocking the Galaxy S3 as well, but have been running recent unofficial cyanogenmod versions (this rom with these gapps. Everything works, it's just getting a bit slow.

The G4 has been tempting me for a while and the price is decent, but the lack of Cyanogenmod support a bit of a blocker for me. I don't care about official updates on a phone so long as I can install my own. The LG G4 looks like it might soon get some support (H815 only, which this is) but it isn't there yet, so it's a bit of a gamble on that front.

          Still, good phone, good price.

        • @elyobo:

What about the cheap Chinese phones?

          Asus mainly…

          or even the Moto G?

          Considered those?

    • +1

If you are concerned with durability, LG V10 seems to be MIL-STD-810G Transit Drop compliant. Apparently it means "that the phone was dropped up to 26 times in testing, from 4 feet or higher and onto its face, sides, corners and back and survived the whole ordeal". It should be on par with G4 in terms of performance if not better (1GB more RAM). Also it has stronger glasses as well (Gorilla Glass 4). I am not sure how much it'd cost in Australia when it gets released in Australia or become readily available for grey import.

There are bits and pieces I thought was nifty (like DAC and amp they've put in that device). It might be worth the wait if you wanna look at something similar to G4.

      • oooo looks nice, but damn on the size, larger than a iPhone 6x Plus.

Compared with my 5" S3 screen that is WAY too big for what I was after. I thought the Moto X Pure @ 5.7" would be touching on too big, but it isn't available in the AU market covering all the LTE bands.

        • I never liked LG phones after seeing how fragile it could be/few incidents my gf had with it (chose to flash CM for that reason) and from few incidents I've heard with LG phones. Though it's just me, I've been avoiding LG products after getting burnt by their laptop range.
My gf's LG G2 would be the last LG phone I'd recommend to anyone, unless they specifically ask for a LG phone recommendation, I know at least.

    • I've had my LG G1 for three years now. Still fast and no problems

      • +1

I recommended my mother in law get the G2, which is great for her with the battery life and screen size, given the reduced battery life on the G3.

2 months ago G4 was definitely going to be my next phone.

I'll have to see what is around in the month or 2 until the Galaxy Gear 2 Classic is released in Oz. As noted above the V10 is way too big for me, so depending on the Z5/Compact, G4 might still be the phone of choice.

Total price with cheapest shipping comes to $509 (Economy Express Shipping).

  • Will this be ok with Vodafone 4G in Australia?

    • +1

      Should do.

      Vodafone Website says:

      1800MHz | 850MHz

  • Any recommendation on a good case for this? I want something with:
    1. flip cover (to protect screen)
    2. quick circle
    3. card holder
    4. can standup the phone (For watching movies etc)

And yes I got it from the last deal ;)

    • +1

What.. hide the lovely leather back? I've just installed a tempered glass screen protector. No case.

      • nar i dont want to. But from what I read the leather back (especially on coners) wear out quite easily…

        • +1

Use the shoe polish and leather conditioner ;)

        • Get the Black one, They are much tougher than brown ones.

        • @coolbbb888: Yes but it has that fake leather look.

        • You can change the backs with LGs plastic backs… Or whatever, it's replaceable :D

      • What brand of protector did you go for and how is it holding up?

    • I am looking for the same thing :) but I do not believe you can find such a case because quickcircle + card holder cannot mix. I do not think you can fit a card on the back or on the front because of the quick circle and the volume buttons. If you take a look at the phone a card would not fit.

That is why you can find cases with quick circle and without card holder or with a card holder but no circle.

This is just a personal opinion based on the cases I saw on ebay.

  • it seems that the selling price has increased to $494 ?!

    • +1

      Use the discount code "WB10".

  • +1

What was wrong with your LG?

    Didn't you want a replacement?

I also bought the LG on eBay through QD.
    Any issues with return?

Mine wasn't charging first time I plugged in and did factory reset.

    • +1

None of the sim cards I put in the phone were able to be recognised, phone kept telling me invalid card. Also phone seemed to heat up significantly. I was offered a replacement but did not want to go through the hassle again if the replacement was also faulty. Also, the box seemed to have been opened, they sent me a crappy $1 charger and there was no spare back cover?!

      • +1

I didn't get a spare back cover either.

        • I was pretty bummed too, but the H815 doesn't come with one.

        • +1

          Spare cover isn't standard.

        • I heard that LG is not sealing these model? Question to people who bought it from QD from previous deal, was your phone box sealed, broken seal or no seal at all.

        • @cisco: The box I received was sealed. QD included a plug converter separate.

        • @cisco: Box was sealed, but the charger they provide is crappy and is not quick charge compatible.

        • @cisco: The box was sealed.Great phone.enjoying it.Australian plug converter was a creepy one.

      • Why would we get a space back cover? I just got the leather one.

      • +1

Original LG box was sealed, with US plug.
Cheap adaptor inc in main delivery box.
Seems to work ok, is a good fit on plug.

No spare back cover included, is that normal?

I have two different cases, so the black leather look isn't seen anyway. Both eBay cheapies.

2900a/h battery included…..though all LG Specs seems to state a 3000a/h battery.

Like the phone, happy with price, hoping it stays that way……

        • Yes, spare cover not included as standard. Battery is and should be 3000mAh, perhaps yours is not genuine?

        • @CLoSeR:
          [@albanyson]
          From LG Taiwan site http://www.lg.com/tw/smart-phones/lg-H815-Leather-Brown
          (exact model shipped by QD)

          STANDARD ACCESSORIES
          Phone * 1
          Original Lithium Battery * 1 (Typ: 3000mAh / Min: 2900mAh)
Travel Charger * 1 (travel charger connector)
          Headphone * 1 (QuadBeat 3 headphones)
          Instructions * 1
          Transmission line * 1

          Note
          - no two batteries are identical… capacity varies. Minimum spec is 2900mAh, therefore this is what is written on battery
          - no mention of second cover

        • @ozdavo: Typ: 3000mAh is written on my battery. Everything on that link you provided talks about 3000mAh battery, where is the reference to 2900mAh?

        • @CLoSeR:
At the bottom of the PRODUCT SPECIFICATION tab, under STANDARD ACCESSORIES

Maybe the TW version has a different spec battery to the AU model?
          Where did your come from?

I got mine from QD, it says 2900mAh/11.2Wh
          BL-51YF
          1ICP6/51/73
          P/N: EAC62818407 LLL

        • +1

          @ozdavo:
Mine is from QD with a Typ 3000mah battery. So I think it's like I mentioned in the other thread that there might be two or more batches of G4 from QD. Some also said they have apps in Chinese when they got theirs, and mine didn't… In that case I think they got the telco version and I got the outright retail version, both are unlocked Taiwanese G4 and usable here.

        • @ozdavo:

Mine is a Taiwan spec model bought through T-Dimension HK.

          P/N: EAC62818401 LLL

      • +1

I didnt get the spare cover either. from what I saw on youtube (unboxing etc). I believe the spare cover is only for US…

      • How long before they asked for replacement or refund? And did they contact you via Ebay. I too had a faulty phone from QD ebay, my phone couldn't charge using any kinds of adapter. They just received my phone at their sydney warehouse.

        • Looking to sell my mine, only a month old.
If the other person wants to claim warranty how will it work?

  • -1

What was wrong with your QD Ebay one?

  • Can ppl share why they think that the buttons on the back aren't annoying? I have the LG G2 and am still annoyed by it because double tap to wake doesnt always register and when I have it lying flat on some surface its annoying to pick it up and press the button on the back. This is also annoying with the volume where you have to either use some software volume controls (which might not always be as usable in some videos on webpages) or again pick the phone up to press the volume buttons on the back.

How are LG G* users solving this problem?

    • +5

I don't have this issue with my G4.

    • +5

      Like the buttons on back.
Fits in hand, can hold it and finger on baso also.
No issue with adapting the the rear buttons.

      • +2

Having no buttons on side when gaming is good too. Even double tap volume down to take quick photos is a neat feature.

    • +1

My dad has g2 and wife has g3, both are happy with the Tap to wake up and buttons at the back.

      • I am ok with the buttons on the back, they are a little strange in the beginning but you get used to them. People say that they enjoy them after a while more than the buttons on the side. Also double tap to wake works fine.

    • you may want to calibrate the touch screen for better double taps to wake. Mine double taps works fine even on the table.

      • will take a look at this, thanks!

    • I have a smart cover (non official one, it's made by Nillkin).

Open the cover and the phone wakes. Easy.

      • this sounds like a nice option to deal with the waking up of the device

    • seems like im in the minority. it is probably because i was so used to samsung devices with the physical button on the face of the device which meant only one press to wake vs the double tap and haven't changed my habits like so many others seem to be able to do…

      • +1

yea the back button I think it's a great idea, I'm sure u would get used to it very quickly. FYI - I came from a long line of samsung phones too! :)

    • No issue with the back buttons. you can wake it up with double tap on the screen. You can also check notifications when it's off just by sliding on the screen.

  • Wow $484
    The countdown of depreciation begin.

Now wait until G4 15%off buyer start to be depressed.

    • what about the postage….lol
And wouldnt I (15%off buyer) be able to depreciate as well?

  • +2

Taking a risk buying form E-Global, QD-AU or T-Dimension would be safer options.

    • Actually I think you only meant QD, because T-Dimension is actually the same as DWI and E-global (please correct me if I'm wrong).

      • I only received mine on Friday from the eBay deal…..so shipping wasnt the fastest.
But then nothing ever seems to be fast by post down here, so no worse than anyone else/from anywhere else.

      • I think you mean DWI and E-Global which are owned/run by the same people. T-Dimension are not affiliated with them.

        • Thanks for that, I've always thought T-D was owned by the DWI people as well.

  • Great phone. Still unhappy about battery life. I'm thinking of getting this :)
    http://m.ebay.com.au/itm/Hyperion-LG-G4-6000mAh-Extended-Bat…

    • Should improve with Android 6.0 is released rumoured December thanks to Doze feature.

      • Yeah doze will help standby time.

  • +1

I got this phone at the last eBay deal. upgrading from Note 2, and damn the G4 is beautiful and quite clever. I love the double tap to wake - this alleviates the problem of not having a physical home button and power button at the back.

The phone does have some small issues - does heat up pretty quickly on video playback or playing games. And for me the call quality is crap. It sounds like you're calling on an electronic-type voip line rather and a standard, clear mobile line. Maybe it's just my phone.

But the battery life is amazeballs; and the UI is clean. I'm very happy with my purchase. with 32 GB onboard (about 20 GB realistically), I haven't had to plug in an SD card just yet.

    • +1

I'm in the same boat (upgraded from a note 2). I must say the screen is very nice and so is the camera. Played the latest game (that marvel fighting game) and it's smooth as.

EDIT: I should be clearer I didnt have those issues that you had, I was simply saying in the same boat as in coming from NOTE2 :)

    • +1

Sounds like just your phone, voice quality is excellent and clear provide you calling people on Telstra. If they are on optus or vodafone then not so good, but that is same with all phones.

I must admit I pretty much trashed the phone on battery yesterday without using powersaving mode. Brightness set high, played the new need for speed game for around 1 hour, and listen to music through the speaker while browsing, yet still manage over 3 hours on screen time.

  • +3

Showing $500 now and coupon code doesn't work.

  • Is the 3-5 days shipping accurate? Anyone have experience?

    • far from accurate, bought mine from previous deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/214685

Still says processing without any tracking number, asked them why and they said they are still waiting on stocks to arrive.

But at the time of purchase, it said "in stock"

      • Thanks for that i would need it quickly

      • same.. ordered on sunday night.. only have the processing email.. i need it by friday cos going overseas.. but doubt i'll get it in time..

    • Ordered a phone from them Sunday, no dispatch yet. It does state that the item will ship within three days though. They said it would ship today when I contacted them so Ill give them the benefit of the doubt until the end of the day.

      • I was told it would be shipped out yesterday (Tuesday), and no news from them yet. How did you get in contact with them ? They're not replying on their livechat and emails !

        • Yeah just the contact us in the top right on their website late last night then got a reply this morning. I assume they just don't have the manpower to keep up with the demand.

        • Just got dispatched so they kept their word.

        • @westhaus: me too!

        • @le3lee:

Mine just got dispatched as well! Bought mine on Monday night/Tuesday morning

        • @westhaus: Made my order on Sunday, and it still says "processing". And yeah still no reply..

  • Bought the phone yesterday for $506 + postage and sent a support ticket today asking if I can get a discount applied to my order as it was only 1 day apart and they said no as the $484 was due to supplier price error. They then offered a $6 discount which pissed me off but I accepted it as it's better than nothing.

  • Can anyone who has the G4 (and is fussy with music playback quality) confirm there are no audio issues when listening to music through the headphones. The G3 had a lot of reports of crackling and distortion when listening to music, and high quality music playback is important to me.

    • It sounds ok to me. I just tested it now and it sounds the same as on every other device I listen to.
