Can't Flash TWRP on Samsung Galaxy S3

Hi guys,

Finally decided to flash TWRP on my S3. When booting into recovery mode (stock 3e), it first says no command and error but then loads the stock recovery.

I have tried many attempts to flash TWRP using Odin (through Download Mode) and Odin says success but when booting into recovery it just loads into the stock one.. I even tried disabling auto-reboot in Odin, but to no luck. Does anyone have any solutions to being able to flash TWRP.

I would really like to install Cyanogenmod onto it, and have learn't that TWRP is the safest way to do it.

Thanks,

UPDATE: After rooting through Kingo Root, I decided to reboot into recovery and magically TWRP loads ;-) .

  • Is this what you're after? Think you'll have better luck asking on XDA.

  • Try other custom recovery? I think I had problems with flashing custom recovery on my old phone (S4 Active), ended up going for another one which worked fine. Not sure why it didn't work, might've been getting wrong model number or something. Though I couldn't be bothered to check :P

  • Is this your problem?

CM Wiki - How to Install CyanogenMod on the Samsung Galaxy S III (Sprint) ("d2spr"):

10.You can now manually reboot the phone into recovery mode. Hold Vol Up, Home & Power. Be sure to reboot into recovery immediately after having installed the custom recovery. Otherwise the custom recovery will be overwritten and the device will reboot (appearing as though your custom recovery failed to install).

    • Yes, I've tried that. I also tried disabling auto-restart in ODIN, and pulled the battery, then restarted into recovery (not allowing the phone to first boot), however that hasn't fixed it.

  • Try a different recovery like CWM.

There's also Mobile Odin, which doesn't require you to connect your phone to the PC at all, give that a whirl.

    • Will do.

    • you need root for mobile odin though i believe…chances are he is not rooted.

        I am, please read update.

  • From TWRP:

Note many devices will replace your custom recovery automatically during first boot. To prevent this, use Google to find the proper key combo to enter recovery. After typing fastboot reboot, hold the key combo and boot to TWRP. Once TWRP is booted, TWRP will patch the stock ROM to prevent the stock ROM from replacing TWRP. If you don't follow this step, you will have to repeat the install.

So I get from that that you should try to boot into recovery immediately after Odin restarts the phone? Strange though, I installed TWRP on my i9300 recently and didn't have any such problem.

    • ^this! +1

    • Tried, however this hasn't fixed the problem. I'll post some pictures soon.

  • Try installing an older version of TWRP? I had issues installing 2.8.7.0 on my GT-9305 and when I tried to install 2.8.4.0, it worked… and I have not had a problem with 2.8.4.0 at all. Give that a go.

    • Tried that :)

      • Aiite I'm out of ideas =\

  • What firmware are you on? If you're on >4.3 then you probably have KNOX on your phone,
which will prevent you from modifying the bootloader.

    EDIT: Here are some links I bookmarked from my Galaxy S3 (4g) upgrades;
    Remove KNOX - http://www.droidviews.com/disable-knox-security-service-on-s…
    TWRP - http://www.droidviews.com/root-and-install-twrp-on-galaxy-s3…

    • Yes, I'm on 4.3. Will have a read in when I get a chance.

  • it has been a while since using odin/samsung devices, though are you using the correct file type to flash? .tar i think (not .zip) ?
