  • why not in nsw catalogues? :(

    • It may be available in your state. You can check your state catalogue here. I did not go through each state as my internet is shaped at the moment.

  • oh oh i just saw this on tv! beat me to the post.

  • great stuff!!

i suggest you get name brand HD if you can afford $20-$30 more…Honestly,Buffalo's stuff are poorly made..specially when it come to Hard Drive..i don't want to take the risk of losing all my data…

    • My Buffalo NAS uses a Western Digital Drive..
It's slow but the build quality is fine and it works OK for my purposes, serving media.

Where do you get the impression that there are drive makers apart from Hitachi, Seagate, WD and Samsung anyway?
I don't even think Maxtor make drives anymore, they use Seagate drives in their cases now from what I've seen.

EDIT: I found on Amazon.com user reference that talks about Buffalo Brand Hard Drives which is later refuted by another commenter..

      what have you been smoking?
most of the PC/Gadget magazines all recommend Buffalo's HD over the Seagate and especially the WD
just because AUS doesnt stock much Buffalo stuff doesn't mean they're crap.
Buffalo is well known in other countries… it is a "name brand"

  • Can this device switch off itself when we power down the computer?

    • Doubtful..
None of the other brands have a feature like this.
a usb powered 2.5" drive will do this though.
Expect to pay about $100 for a 500Gb 2.5" though.

Alternatively, buy a Jackson energy saver power board, that's what I do.
When my computer turns off (or sleeps) my monitor, speakers, printer and usb drive all have power shut off too, they're not even on standby!

Well my cheap WD 1TB My Book Essentials do. The only ones I found that don't are the LaCie range.

      • +1 my WD 500GB USB essentials does too, top priority feature for the type of usage I have.

  • Looks like Victoria miss out.

  • Does anyone had a toshiba flash drive before are they reliable ? 8G for $20 is pretty good would prefer a 16G but may settle for 8.

  • Bing Lee has this for $139 (http://www.binglee.com.au/Computer+Peripherals/5847/Buffalo+…) do they price-match??

  • The drive is model number HD-CEU2 (HD-CE1.0TU2). A few things I am going to consider before buying this drive:

    (a) A quick search on the model number reveals that if at anytime the drive is accidentally tipped over on it's side, it will almost always stop working and all data will be lost. Warranties do not replace data.

    (b) Due to a corrupt firmware version on early builds of this drive, it may show 'unintended behavior' during hibernation or standby modes. In some cases the data may be rendered inaccessible. There is a firmware patch released but is useless after the problem has occurred. Info and patch here: http://www.buffalotech.com/press/releases/important-notice-t…

    (c) There are many reports of Vista OS updates that "break" this drives functionality forcing owners to reformat on a regular basis. In these cases XP will retain functionality with the drive which affirms what we all know about Vista's USB issues.

    (d) No (Official) Windows 7 OS support.

    (e) Eco Manager will not work in Win 7 64bit. BuffaloTech no ETA on update. Info found here: http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/Storage/HD-CEU2-eco-manager…

      So,
      a) be careful when the drive is running (applies to all hard drives..)
      b) update the firmware first thing (applies to all drives)
      c) Vista sucks, we all knew this
      d) Should be OK, but make sure you have someone who you can give this to if there is some unusual problem.
      e) Looks like this drive might have auto startup/shutdown after all..

  • For ppl in Sydney bing lee at old guildford told me they will price match this…

  • any network access? love to plug it into my router and access via the home network.
