Thoughts on This Gaming Setup and Where to Buy Parts Cheaper than MSY ?

Hi guys, I've been looking at building a gaming PC for a long time now.
I have done a lot of research regarding the components in the list below.
I definitely want an AMD build to keep it as cheap as possible, but I also want as much power out of the system that I can.

Give me your thoughts on this set up and let me know if anything should be changed.
I was going to buy this all from MSY, but if there is some place cheaper online or around the Melbourne area let me know!

CPU: AMD FX-8350 4.0Ghz 8-Core
Motherboard: AsRock 970 Extreme3 /970 Extreme3 R2
Memory: Corsair Vengeance CMZ16GX3M2A2133C10 16GB Kit(8GBx2) DDR3-2133
Graphics card: Sapphire (11244-00-41G) 8GB R9 390 Nitro TRI-X OC PCI-E VGA Card
HDD: Seagate 3.5" Barracuda 2TB ST2000DM001 SATA3 7200rpm 64MB Cache Hard Disk
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO MZ-75E120BW 120G SATAIII SSD Solid State Drive (for OS mainly)
Case: Thermaltake Black Versa H25 CA-1C2-00M1NN-00
PSU: Antec VP-650P PSU

Price: $1360 (MSY)

Already have OS, monitor and keyboard/mouse.
Additional fans will probably get added, if anyone has some cooling know-how feel free to put in some advice!

Thanks guys!

I don't think anyone can beat MSY's price, they are good :)

for a few $$ more i would bump up to 250gb+ ssd

Yeah definitely get a bigger SSD. They are stupidly cheap compared to how pricey they use to be just a few years ago. Spend the extra $60 and get a 240GB one.

    • Agree with this, I've got a 256GB SSD, doesn't seem to take a lot of games to fill it up.

Pickup a second hand 290 if you can. 390 is just a rebadged 390 with more memory

    • I looked at benchmarking for the 290 and it isn't quite as good, but i guess that's the extra memory at play, i'll look into it, it would be a lot cheaper!

    • just sussed it out and i can get one for around $300 and the 290x performs about as well as a 390 :)

AMD is such rubbish nobody would recommend it here. Intel murders it. You are spending near $1400 for a socket from 2010 and an outdated power hungry rubbish CPU from 2012. Get an i5 6600 non K + H110 board if you want to save cash with Intel.

I smell a biased intel user

Eh, he's actually right. AMD's upcoming Zen might be worthwhile, time will tell, but none of their current CPU options are.

        • Realistically though this build should run say witcher 3 on ultra (2k res) at say 50-55 fps whereas an intel build would get a bit above 60. Intel would use marginally less power which does not bother me and the temps would be lower by ~5oC, i'm on a tight budget so i think for a few years this setup would be fine would it not?

        • @MoreChilly:

Depends what the price difference is, I haven't looked, but worth paying a bit extra for an Intel. Definitely far superior CPUs.

        • @conan2000: I'm with the other Intel supporters. I got burned a long time ago with a cheaper Cyrix chipset (they aren't around anymore). Ever since then … Intel all the way.

Search for each part on Static Ice. It's a search engine for parts, sorted by price, that's limited to Australia. Very useful

    • thanks i'll check it out :)

      • This is true, but also, make sure that the stores you're buying from are reputable. When I did this, I found some prices were at places like CPL, which are famous for selling parts with bent pins, etc.

      • and don't forget https://au.pcpartpicker.com/ - like Staticice

Also remember that each different supplier will charge postage - much cheaper to combine
Still a valid option to check the MSY prices against other suppliers

And if not in a rush - wait for bargains here and compile from there
E.g. - a number of SSD deals here lately
Or the Asus deal on Amazon + PSU + GPU would be cheaper plus warranty & legit OS

  • Re the graphics card, I would take a look at the games you're planning on playing and do some research into AMD vs NVIDIA for those games.
I heard Project Cars for example gets much better performance running on NVIDIA.

    • And then games like Battlefield have support for AMD's Mantle.
