  • Looks like you're doing around 300km a day?

Launceston has a free monkey exhibit at the main park/botanical gardens. Make sure you visit Cataract Gorge too.

Similarly Burnie botanical gardens is nice and has a free peacock exhibit. It also has a waterfall at the top.

Are you adventurous? If so you probably want to climb to the top of Cradle but you would have to leave early that day. Near Strahan there are some big sand dunes which you can slide down (if you have something to slide on). You may also want to climb Mount Amos at Freycinet. For something less extreme at Cradle there are some nice little walks from the Lodge. You don't need to be a guest… http://www.cradlemountainlodge.com.au/activities/walks/

Be careful driving when I was there last we saw two cars on their roof within one week.

    • Thanks a lot mate, appreciate the heads up :)

Yeah, moderately adventurous hehe but yup, it's quite ambitious :D

  • I would post your itinerary over at the TripAdvisor forums. They are quite active for Tasmania.

What they will tell you straight away is TOO MUCH driving. I would not do Strahan at all. You would be leaving as soon as you go there.

D4 is around 6-7 hours driving. That's before you actually stop and see anything
    D5 is around 6

You are doing the right thing arriving one city, leaving another. But you need to pick either the east or west coast. Not both.

I would possibly head to cradle for a LONG day and back to Launceston. Then head via the east coast. Ltn to Hobart.

    • Absolutely. That itinerary just won't work. You'll only see things through the window are the best parts of Tasmania are not next to a road.

Natt is spot on that for 6 days you'll need to choose East or West Coast but could fit Cradle and Port Arthur in both ways if you keep very busy.

For 6 days don't bother with Stanley or Devonport(I would say the same for 16 days) and just head straight to Cradle mountain. It's about 6 or 7 hour walk up the mountain if you get a clear day or otherwise just go for a walk around the lake.

Freycinet and Strahan are both absolutely beautiful but completely different. If you go to Strahan you have to take a cruise to see the best part of it, most probably my favourite spot it Tassie. If you choose to go East Coast I'd probably try and start up at Bay of Fires and then head to Freycinet, make sure you do the Wineglass bay walk and then head on to Port Arthur and Hobart.

I'm not sure where you're from but keep in mind that Tasmania's roads aren't always in great condition and all apart from the Midland Highway(running between Launceston and Hobart) are to climb up and down hills and be windy with blind corners. Don't expect to be driving anywhere near the speed limit for the whole way and driving at night is quite difficult when you add these conditions in with the abundance of wildlife.

      • Thanks zappy and Natt, that is very helpful advise indeed, gotta change the itinerary taking those into consideration :)
