Recommend me a dryer

I don't expect frequent use as I'm happy letting the sun dry my clothes generally. Just intend to use this on days when it's raining or I need to dry stuff quickly.

I know there's all different types - I don't understand any of them or which is best. It's just me so I don't need anything too large - my washing machine is 7.5kg and that suits me nicely so something around that capacity would be ideal. Could I get something half decent in the $500-600 range?

  • we just bought this one 2 months ago

    goes well

Fisher and Paykel 5kg sensor dryer Model DE50F56E1

    about $460

    • Doesn't look too bad at all; price is right too. Disappointing it's only got a 2 star energy rating but I suppose anything to do with heating has poor efficiency. It comes with a mounting kit?

  • to get a higher star item, you need to spend $1000+

    what's a mounting kit?

    • Yeah seems so. Although I do intend to use it infrequently so I think I'll just suck it up and be content with 2 stars :)

Mounting kit - brackets, etc. to put it on the wall.

  • Does your laundry have an exhaust vent for the machine to vent moist air outside?

    • no.

      • Are you looking at condenser dryers? Would be worth considering if moisture/mould are an issue in your house.

        • I'm looking at a vent-type. Is venting outside strictly necessary? Can't I just vent into the laundry because I'm sure none of these machines include a vent kit - it has to be purchased separately which hints to me it's optional.

        • @djc3292:

It might be OK, depending on your house. If your laundry has good ventilation and isn't a mould trap then you should be good.

However if you have an older house (e.g. with plaster over brick walls) which will collect moisture when cold then you might be better off in the long run with a condenser dryer which will remove a lot of the moisture from the air that it exhausts from the dryer.

  • i THINK it has that kit - please check first

yes - you'll need to have ventilation - we just open the window

    • didn't realise that. that sure throws a spanner in the works.

  • only the more expensive recirc / condensation ones don't need ventilation
