Is it better and/or cheaper to use a credit card OR paypal when buying parts from the US?

Hi all, google hasn't been helping with paypal listing results for a page or two and given the computing deals it seemed a better place to ask…

Just like the title:
Is it cheaper to use a credit card or paypal to purchase from newegg?

TIA and regards,
GDavid

    PayPal is always better.

  • For what reason, is it cheaper or are you referring to the protections offered?

    • Protection …small fee for peace of mind.

  • what sort of credit card you got? 28 degrees?

  • No, a standard CU card, but I started reflecting on the paypal online fee calculator…

Your poll question/answers don't make sense.

28 Degrees or the Citibank card are best - no fees and closest to market rate.
Paypal is probably the next best.
You need to check if your CC charges an overseas transaction fee, and/or a conversion fee.

  • Thanks for the reply djmatt24. Pretty straightforward question with poll added to see if there were any replies. The depends option was for people like you who replied in part with a question.

I did note the paypay conversion fees:
To US or Canadian dollars 3.5% above the exchange rate
To all other currencies 4% above the exchange rate
Within your PayPal account (not as part of a purchase) to any currency. 2.5% above the exchange rate

    Whereas my CU charges %3

My concern layed in any possibly hidden fees. I've looked into the 28 degree card but can't really justify it given the amount of transactions we make…

    • If you ask "Is it cheaper to use credit card or PayPal" and I answer "Yes", what did I mean? :P

  • Just bought an $US 89 item from the USA, (shipped from Hong Kong) and it cost me $AU 135 using PayPal.
Worst part is it was the wrong size and I had to send it back for an exchange. $AU 43 postage back to Hong Kong.

Don't think I'll be buying from the US for a while.

Why didn't you get PayPal to pay for the shipping? https://www.paypal.com/au/webapps/mpp/home. Exactly for this reason, they cover return shipping fees.

      • Just discovered this. Thanks guys.

    • Was your purchase not eligible for PayPal's free return service?

Just fyi, you can link a credit card to paypal and get them to charge you in overseas currency. They make it deliberately difficult to find

    • I followed your reddit link but the options on the page are very different to what is available on the paypal page?
      (spellcheck)
      Edit:
      Found it…
      Thank you.

        try this.

Log into paypal. then click this link. Then click 'conversion options' and select "Bill me in the currency listed on the seller's invoice."

This will mean your credit card provider works out the international currency fee, not paypal. You may save heaps, or lose money.

        • Thanks Davo1111, I found the area.
          Thanks once again.

  • Hmmm.

I tried asking weather people had worked out "Is it cheaper to use a credit card or paypal to purchase from newegg?"

Only answer so far was djmatt24:
"28 Degrees or the Citibank card are best - no fees and closest to market rate.
Paypal is probably the next best.
You need to check if your CC charges an overseas transaction fee, and/or a conversion fee"

    My CU charges a %3 Conversion fee…

    • worked example on USD $100 spend:

Paypal: rate is 1 AUD = 0.696673 USD, so Paypal will charge A$143.54
(paypal exchange rates can be looked up inside your account)

      Cr Card: source: https://www.mastercard.com/global/currencyconversion/
      AUD $1 = USD $0.716500
so, credit card will get charged A$139.57, plus 3%, = A$143.75

28degrees/citibank with no foreign fee would be A$139.57

      • Thanks, what of the changes to paypal suggested by Davo1111?

Works out same as paying by cr card, as the cr card provider is doing the conversion.

  • Definitely best to use Pay Pal ——— The reason they have a safety net which means you do not have to cancel your credit card if things go wrong .Like others I have done lots of on line purchases over the years & the only 3 problems I ever had was from USA companies when using my credit card direct . The Bank refunded my money on each occasion but had to cancel my credit card on each occasion . As you know , very inconvenient .
1st problem was purchase of CD set from USA ————- Never arrived ———- Pay Pal came to the rescue with full refund
2nd problem ———- Free Teeth Whitening from two Well known USA companies ——- Gave Credit Card Details to pay for postage —- they sent the samples but kept billing me for monthly treatment $150 + —— Bank cancelled Master Card & credited me with refunds
3rd problem ——- Same as above but this time it was postage again for free sample of health vitamins ——- cancellation of credit card again , refund from bank .
Pay Pal have your credit card details but not the companies.
I even pay my Telestra phone & internet via Pay Pal ——— no credit card fees as Telestra have

From experience, I would pay with Credit card ( I have Citibank) for purchases online, than PayPal. PayPal's ad seem to focus on BUYER Protection but believe me they're NOT. I'm still disputing a purchase from few months ago. The seller must have been confused with Australia & AustriA. Seller shipped $400 worth through Sweden Post (seller from HK). Items never arrived. The 2nd lot (worth $200) was sent via Malaysia Post. & it arrived 1 week after.

PayPal in the end, said the seller was at fault BUT i might not be able to get a refund! When I questioned why & told them the business (Everbuying) is still operating, PayPal then said I'll be eligible for refund. Good, you might say BUT PayPal wants me to return the goods that never arrived! The idiots in PayPal don't seem to understand that I'm only asking for partial refund of the goods that never arrived. GRRRR. Oh. For the items that NEVER arrived, PayPal wanted me to file a police report! PayPal is only good to use if you're 100% sure the sale & items won't have any problem.

Anyway, with my cc when I rang them to say item didn't arrive or item was not as advertised, they quickly refunded the money.
