WTB Exercise Bike - Advice?

Hi everyone,

I want to buy an inexpensive exercise bike, I plan on using this for maybe 4 x 30min sessions per week. However I am not interested in commercial or second hand bikes, I just want something that'll make me sweat. (Good resistance) and something that I can put in front of the TV, etc.

I know, I know. Riding outside is more rewarding but I really just want an indoor bike.

Possible candidates:

http://www.kmart.com.au/product/exercise-bike/669301

I am currently favouring the kmart one because:

A) It's marginally cheaper
B) It looks like it'll get the job done
C) I don't have to worry about picking it up from Camberwell

EDIT: I reckon I'll go with this one.

    Gumtree

    • Plenty of near new ones around, save a $. People buy them with great intentions but then the inspiration fades.

Hi OP, first congratulations for your courage to make a decision to change.

Think you are pretty clear in mind what to get but wants some assurance.
Cheap - Kmart is $49 vs eBay $200+. 4x more.

The description of Kmart bike is "perfect, smooth" bike, if it is not, think there should be enough reason to bring it back.

Surprised the one in eBay sold 3 in 24 hours. Exercise bike is in demand?

I have just started this week to walk around the block with my young child together every night after dinner, so get him into a healthier lifestyle.

  • That Lifespan V The Market thing is confusing me. What's better, a heavy frame or a heavy flywheel?

    They're not the same thing.

The spin bike has a heavy flywheel which has a lot of inertia and the riding sensation is a lot different. When you stop putting in effort the flywheel will keep moving (depending on the level of resistance you have on). If you are not experienced with spin bikes you may not like it. Google "spinning bike vs upright bike" to get more details.

However, that said, I far prefer the spin bike for a workout. There are a lot of free spin classes on Youtube (search "spin class") which are great to follow along with. You could watch one of these to get an idea of how the bike is used.

Also, consider the noise. Neither of these are quiet bikes and in front of the TV you may be OK but anyone else in the room will be annoyed. Expect to be wearing earbuds for your music.

Another option, if you already have a bike is a "bike trainer".

    e.g. (there are lots around)

It is smaller and can be put away in the cupboard. These come in the cheaper magnetic version and the more expensive hydraulic. The later gives you a much better resistance curve. Not something you'd worry about as a newbie but that's the difference if you are comparing models. Again, these are not quiet.

(aside - for any bike consider a plastic mat - you sweat inside

I have a spin and a trainer but I am into cycling. I got my spin from a freecycle offering ($0) and the trainers are on sale all the time if you keep an eye out. There should be sales on around now since most people buy them for winter and get outside when the sun shines.

Hope I've helped rather than make the decision harder :)

try this http://www.kmart.com.au/product/magnetic-exercise-bike/20930… I've been using it almost daily for the past 5 months or so and hasnt skipped a beat. obviously lacks the features of many high end ones, but gets the job done, and for the price Im more than happy with it.

I had a look at the $49 one at Kmart instore and its mediocre at best. Consider the one linked above. for the 40 bucks extra, it was a no brainer for me
