Boxmovies - DVD Rental Kiosk. Legit or scam?

A new dvd rental kiosk popped up near where I shop a few weeks ago, and since I've been using Oovie (and the free Wednesday dvd rental codes) for a while, was curious about it.

Checked it today and it said Free Rentals on Tuesdays on the screen. Selected a few movies, and was able to get three movies for $0, though the T&A said only two movies at a time were allowed. I stopped before I paid. The screen and the kiosk both look great, but the website (http://boxmovies.com.au) is not so reassuring — it appears there are only two branches in Australia, both in NSW. Yet it's run out of WA (apparently)..not to mention boxmovies.com.au redirects to boxmovies.loldvd.com. ._.

Has anyone used the kiosk and found it's fine? I.e. No scam a week or so after?

After sitting beside the kiosk using my stupid phone for slow internet, I couldn't find any reviews on it…which is to be expected if it's new. Later on some dude came by and I asked him about it; he said he'd used it and that it's free on Tuesdays, and he attempted to demo it to me by selecting a movie. Unfortunately, he swiped the credit card, got 'Thanks! Bye!' but no movie came out… ._. What gives..

Edit: 26th Feb - Went last week or so on Tuesday, and it was no longer Free Rentals on Tuesdays. There WAS something that said you get a free rental if you register, so I tried doing it with my debit card just to see if it would work. I seemed to complete the registration form successfully, but there was no promo code or any confirmation email sent…

  • I'm also interested in this Boxmovies Kiosk.
    Has anyone else used them?

    it sounds legit.

Uh, have you used it before? >.>

  • I guess it's a bit different to a plain old website since they actually went to the effort of putting the kiosk out there. I would think you should be able to pursue any problems with the authorities or your credit card company if it overcharges you since it's not like some off-shore scam. I've seen one in Brisbane and will go back to see if Tuesday is free.

  • There was one near the entrance of the Darling Harbour shopping complex a few months back next to wok on in. but I returned a few days later and the machine was gone. Never to be seen again

I didn't use it but was just curious what it was.

  • The kiosk in Brisbane I mentioned is redroomdvd.com. Looks 100% legit and it's been there at least 6 weeks now. No free Tuesdays but it claims new releases are $2.95 each and your first rental is Free if you enter the promo code BIGRED.

    • I checked last or two Tuesdays ago, and there was no more Tues free; will update that. I did try to sign up for an account at the kiosk with my debit card just to see if it would work and also to see if I could get the free first rental, but there was nothing. ._. No code, no email sent…goodness knows what's going on.

RE RedRoomDVD, it's not the same as Boxmovies, is it..? While we're on DVD rental places, I think Oovie is $2.95 up to 7pm the next day, and I'd rather go for that than $2.95 for six hours, heh. How does the 6h work anyway..does it jump forward if 6h happens to land in the middle of the night?

I know that I can pursue it with the CC company, but I'd rather not have to pursue it in the first place..-wry-

      • Yes I think redroom and boxmovies are different. The 6 hour limit on redroom i think is only with the new releases, and old dvd's you can have for $2.95 until 6 pm the next day. According to the flyer redroom lets you use a debit card but its a prepaid account, so I guess you need a big deposit which they can raid for late fees or non-returns.

        • Thanks for that. =) There's no redroom nearby but it's still good to know in case they open one up nearby, heh.
