Crumpler Private Zoo Backpack at Myer for $70 (down from $95)

90

Been looking for a Crumpler backpack and came across this deal for the Private Zoo. There is Red and Blue available although blue seems to be a bit more common. Checked a few stores in Vic and NSW and it is definitely available at a number of stores. I haven't seen this bag for less than $95.

"with lifetime guaranteed deductive design and functionality"

:| what the hell does that even mean????

It's hipster language. Roughly translated, it means "over priced nylon bag".

I've had a Crumpler bag for six years, and worn it nearly every day. The fabric (at least for the bag I purchased) was very durable and has survived all that time. The zipper started to wear out so I took it back to a Crumpler Store and it was sent to repairs for free. They didn't even ask for proof of purchase. In the meanwhile, they offered me a free loan bag. Quite happy with the experience overall, liked it enough to buy a second Crumpler bag.

But I'd only buy the bags when they are on sale, and I'm wary of the bags on the cheaper side of the range as the material seems a bit thin for my liking.

      • …big deal, it's $70 for a bag that looks like it cost $15 from Big W. Could buy a much nicer bag for that price…or buy countless cheaper bag that will probably last almost as long.

Is it just me, or does this $8 bag from Kmart actually look better than this?

Each to their own, I just don't get it.

        • lets see how long the bigw bag lasts you.

          @pitufon:
I wouldn't use either, I'm not in high school so I don't use backpacks.

But, if I had to, I could buy almost 9 Kmart ones for the price of 1 Crapler. I'm sure the 9 would last longer combined…or the first may even last just as long.

Oh, but think of the carbon footprint you're leaving… whooops sorry this is ozbargain. Yeah, I pity the fool that buys this. hides the 3 crumpler bags

"but think of the carbon footprint you're leaving" - When logical fails, roll out the environmental chestnut.

The quality of the zips will be crap, the fabric will be thin and flimsy any padding will squish down to nothing in a couple of months and the cheap cotton thread in the stitching will start to rip within a year.

I've had my crumpler for about 15 years now. carried it full of books and an old 17 inch laptop all the way through 5 years of uni. Have taken it travelling, lent it to people, overloaded it full of crap on multiple occasions. I havent seen any kmart or target bags that measure up in ruggedness.

On my bag the padding has barely squished down still as firm as new, zips still going strong, haven't popped open once and none of the stitches have dropped a single thread. That's apart from some pretty clever design features on the inside. I've seen plenty of more expensive bags that are made of lower quality materials than my crumpler.

I have no idea about the quality or features of this bag. I don't know if Crumpler's quality has dropped of late, but if not I'd buy one again in a heartbeat.

        • Crumpler is pretty much BIFL though. Life time warranty is a big pull for a lot of people.
Same reason I am looking to buy a Filson Duffle.

        • @simulacrum:
Maybe worth it if your carrying a bunch of textbooks everyday, I guess.

        • @PainToad:

In highschool and uni I had a really stupid habit (largely through laziness) of carrying most of my books in my bag.. so they really got a work out. My highschool backpack came apart at the seams after a couple of years.

Investing in a decent bag also makes sense if you're carrying a few thousand dollars worth of camera gear or computer gear.. at that point saving a few bucks on a bag just doesn't make sense.

          @simulacrum:
Don't they have like zero padding? I wouldn't trust them to carry valuable electronics.

        • @PainToad: The few camera bags i've seen up close seem to have a comparable amount of padding to similar style bags from other brands. I have a friend with a crumpler camera backpack (can't remember the model) and another friend with a LowePro Flipside.. for my money the crumpler seems sturdier.

        • +1

@simulacrum: IMO crumpler quality has dropped a little when they moved their manufacturing to china i think. If your bag is 15 years old - there is a chance it was hand made in collingwood lol.

        • @PainToad:

I could use logic and let you know that I've had bags that never lasted as long as the original crumpler CD3 I got (and still have) in the early 90's, and they cost way less, but somehow I know logic is not your bag, baby.

I don't get it … This looks like any $5 bag from eBay and people are willing to pay $70 and call it a bargain , how is that possible ???

Am I missing anything spectacular about this bag \S

Crumpler is the Dr Dre of bags.

its about brand. just like apples

      • +1

Beats and apple explains a lot :)

I've never heard of those and will never pay that amount

    • from a small picture on the internet all you can judge is aesthetics. to determine whether it looks like a $5 bag you have to feel the materials. the thickness of the fabric, the quality of the zips, the stitching, the firmness of the padding etc. I've never seen this particular bag up close so I'd agree from a distance it looks like any other bag, and it may well be, but you really need to see it up close and touch it to know whether you're getting value for your $. When I got my backpack many years ago I only knew it was worth the money only after I inspected it up close.

      • Fair enough , I don't know much about bags TBH , but my Everki bag is holding strong despite my abuse and it was much cheaper than this . .

Each to there own. Plenty of overpriced products out there. I've had a Crumpler bag for close to 15 years and still going strong. Had an issue where I broke one of the buckles but that was replaced under their lifetime warranty.

    • +3

I wouldn't worry. The ones taking cheap shots are people who would never buy the bag.

As Tim Ferris once said, to find the true average, you have to take out the extremes.
Otherwise….. "Bill Gates walked into a bar; and the average salary of everyone in there jumped up by $500,000."

Pros: Good Warranty, good materials used, Australian (Melbourne) brand that grew big in the 90's as they made bags for bike couriers.

Cons: Expensive, regular models no longer made in Australia. (If you research hard enough you will see that except for their custom stuff which used to be made in their Smith St store,) it's made in Vietnam and I think China now. And the one that gets to people: MARKETED TO HIPSTERS.

    • people who don't know about bags will complain. Those who know good bags won't. Cheap backpacks give me back pain after wearing it for a few minutes whereas I can wear the expensive ones for hours with no back pain.

Guys, I hate overprice crap but I bought one of these and it is amazing. Use it nearly daily and it is still going strong. I definitely recommend these.

I've had other bags and none are as durable as these.

  • Crumpler released a lower range models under $100 to cater for that demographic.

IMO they are thinner, less padded and less durable. Proud stash and Private Zoo included. They are still good bags but not as padded and durable then let's say dry red, or king single bags hence the price difference.

But for lifetime guarantee on normal wear and tear, its not too bad at all.
