Need new modem

Hey friends.

Ever since we got wifi we have had the same modem/router set up, I have a netgear range max and sold speed stream modem.
Recently my connection goes out and in constantly over like an hr once every now and then, mostly it works ok but when this happens it's bloody annoying. Now I need help with my new choice of modem and router. I Have about 5-7 devices connected to the wifi at any one time. Should I go for a modem router in one or go separate and which sort of modem should I go for, I don't want to spend big either :)

Your help will be much appreciated :)

how do you know its the modem and not the line itself?

look at a TP-Link, I got a D7 about a year ago, great adsl modem/wireless router. you can still get it or the newer D9.

      second this

nothing can really be wrong with the modem if it works majority of the time (from what you said this only started after a while). I suggest give your ISP a call and report the interruption, and if they deny ask them for modem replacement

        Third this

Although it wouldnt hurt to try a spare/friend's modem to rule out any faults with you're current one.

Do you also have other phone sockets to try?

      • My recently replaced Billion progressively got worse after many years of faithful service. Usually after a few days of good running problems would start popping up.

HQ YouTube stream causing it to freeze? That's a rebooting.
Some wireless devices dropping off and unable to reconnect whilst others happily chug along? That's a rebooting.
Falling off the internet and failing to resync? That's a rebooting.

There were several similar reports on Whirlpool, and some suggestions were to replace the power supply.

In the end, I didn't troubleshoot it as the Netgear D7000 deal came up. Trouble-free internet since.

It's very possible that it is the modem dying, but it's also very possible that it's a line fault and the modem is still perfectly fine.
As suggested above, ask a friend to bring their modem around (Ideally a friend that uses the same ISP as you so that you don't have to change settings on their modem). Plug it in to your line and see if it solves the problem or not.

I will add, get the line tested. I had random drop outs a few years back, phone points in the house had a bit or corrosion and also a problem with the electric gate - it put noise on the phone line when it was used.

  • When it goes off my router still shows up fine so I think it's the shitty modem

    • Your router may still be processing traffic on your LAN?

      • Sorry I'm not tech savy when it comes to modems or connections so no idea what that means. All I know is connection will drop out, if I click connection bar bottom right of win 7 laptop it shows the nergear router 4 green bars but not connected to the modem I guess so the modem must be dropping out is my guess but I don't know much at all :(

        • So when this happen, are all other devices affected as well or just the laptop? Maybe the problem is in the lappy (old windows firmware not updated, missing registry files etc)

        • @DLFCWL: Nah all laptops and devices keep going on and off, phones n all

        • That just narrows it down to modem or line fault. You need to make the next step and determine if the line is bad by using a known good modem.

        • @scubacoles: Hmm I might just go buy a cheap one and test it

  • "I don't want to spend big either :)"

Whats that in $? Everyone on here has a different budget, so you will need to be more specific as our BIG's may differ greatly ;)

  • Who is your internet service provider?

    • Telstra

      • Call Telstra first and tell them you're having troubles..
They may even be able to check your line quality while you're on the phone to them.

If it ends up being the modem at fault, and you're happy with them, you could sign on to a new contract and get a Telstra Air compatible modem bundled in at no extra cost.

        • Ok I will do that, thanks heaps :)

        • @TRENT86: How did you go?

        • @Wakety-Wack: Haven't checked yet m8, been really busy, prob do it 2mrw, I will let you guys know how I go :)
