Gaming laptop $1500-$2000 max

So I thought I might make my first post and hopefully create a healthy conversation. I'm heading over to America and for the last say 3 months ive been pretty set on buying myself a gaming laptop. I've looked through all the overpriced systems on Australian websites etc and they just don't cut it for me, not to mention you can get better systems for a cheaper price off amazon and as I'll be living in America for 3 months this is what I'm hoping to do!

What I'm hoping to achieve from this post is just a few opinions from people on certain brands, models, websites, country of purchase etc.

I'll say that whatever I'm going to buy will have to have at the least an SSD and an nvidia 940/50
Screen size would preferably be 15.6 or below,

Thanks in advance!

  • Hmmm, make sure that the device you own is also sold in Australia as well, if you are planning on getting it off US. If the model is not sold in Australia, the service centre is likely to not have the parts necessary to fix the laptop if it breaks down. So either you'd need to wait few weeks for the parts to come in, or they will refuse to fix your laptop even at your expense (happened with me once, took them an entire month to fix it because they needed to ship the part in).

It'd be better if you grab something that has global warranty, since at least, they will get the parts and fix it (even though it'd take a long long time, it'd be repaired which can't be said for certain if you grab one without global warranty).

Get one of the new MSI gaming laptops with the Intel Skylake processor.

Asus are set to release their ROG line of skylake laptops towards the end of the year. They're a little bit more pricey than MSI

Laptops in America are always cheaper than AUS

    • Came here to recommend MSI :)

  • I've been looking at either the newer Lenovo Y50 as they're about $1850 currently on Amazon, but I'm skeptical about it because of everything that's going on with them at the moment. And I've also been looking at a few models of the ROG series, and like you say they will have new ones soon, but I do like the build of them and prefer it over MSI. MSI just always seem chunky, maybe it's just me!

    Anyway, I appreciate the replies!

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ASUS-15-6-UX501JW-DN233H-W8-1-NB-…

1869 with 30% code it comes to $1308. unbeatable value at least currently in Aus. Its an ultrabook format which may discourage some but i just got mine its nice and performs well. Gtx960m (early 2015 GPU) with a i7 4720HQ (2015 refresh). Only 256 ssd with no user upgradability.

    • I was looking at purchasing this for video editing and photoshop and not really gaming, but wasn't sure it would hold up.

The online reviews are okay but haven't really been great.

  • Yeah the SSD would be my only concern, looks pretty good to me apart from that. I just don't think that in any case 256 GB is enough unfortunately, and I would rather pay a more for both a HDD and an SSD as at least then you have both forms of storage.

    Thanks!

    DezmolishA,
Any laptop that comes with a Nvidia GeForce 940M/950M (like you stated) does not exactly qualify as a gaming laptop. I highly doubt that they can handle modern games at decent framerates. With a budget like that, you should be looking at one with a GTX 8xx/9xx card. If your stash is in USD, you'll find tons of capable laptops on Amazon. I wouldn't recommend one with a UHD panel. IMHO, it's a tad overkill.

    Hope this helps.
