TP-Link Archer D9 Modem Router $198 + Free Ship + Bonus IP Camera by Redemption @ Wireless1

1910
CCRAPFAST

UPDATE: The Wireless1 guys have agreed to extend this deal to Monday midnight. Enjoy :)

Good morning OzBargain - our favourite router has returned!

The Story
Inspired by legendary tightarse’s great work, and the number of requests for D9 on my previous D7 post I have spent the last 2 Thursday night’s ignoring my girlfriend’s requests for shopping and instead nagging/negotiating (nagotiating?) the guys at Wireless1 to do this for the best price ever. It wasn’t an easy feat given the tanking AUD which crossed into 69c again last Thursday, but I hope you guys like this deal.

The Deal
Presenting the TP-Link Archer D9 Modem Router WITH Free Shipping AND Bonus Wireless Night Vision IP Camera (new model NC-220 by redemption) for $198 after applying the code CCRAPFAST in cart. There is no option for pickup online but they have agreed to this for us. The secret handshake is mentioning you are from OzBargain and saying the code :) You can then pay cash/credit and collect right away - of course Camera is still by redemption so you have to wait for that.

Needless to say, as part of the ‘nagotiations’ I have done my usual checks and this is the cheapest price going (ever?). In fact just tested the code and while we agreed at $198 it’s showing as $197.99 so save yourself 1c before that’s fixed lol.

For coverage, speed and stability at this price point, the D9 can’t be beaten. Feel free to google around for reviews, it’s very well received. The free day/night wireless IP camera just sweetens the deal. The NC-220 is a brand new model and I couldn’t find many reviews but if the previous NC-200 is anything to go by it should be pretty good. According to specs it connects at 300Mbps and has real-time H.264 compression so am very keen to test it. Seems to retail around the $70 mark and if it doesn’t catch your fancy then offload on eBay/Gumtree for a further $50 or so 'cashback' on this great router!

The Expiry
Deal will end at midnight on Sunday - I have asked them to extend till Monday midnight as the long weekend is on with most of us out. Will update the deal if they agree.

The Thanks
Thanks to the guys at Wireless1 for agreeing to this deal. Felt a bit creepy/stalkerish hanging around your shop for so many hours while we nutted this out but everyone was very friendly :)

I think I managed to put together a decent deal for our community. Have a great weekend y’all!

The End :)

How does this compare with the asus deal from Msy?

    • +1

That Asus deal is a router only. This is a modem router so has the added functionality of a modem as well. In terms of router performance, Asus makes great stuff but all things considered including the free cam, I would say this is the better deal for sure.

    • I have used TP-Link hardware in the past and found it to be quite poor.
I would recommend Asus over it.

      • Fair. Which one did you try? Btw I like Asus too and my rt-n56u is a brilliant workhorse - but try the D7 or D9, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

      • Agreed. I have had the TL-WR1043ND for a couple of years. Needs a restart every couple of weeks. Not sure I would buy TP-Link again.

      • I've had this same router for several months from an earlier deal here. Best router I've had.

Extremely reliable - never gets turned off so it's had a fair test. Wifi coverage is excellent. By far the best coverage I've had compared to other routers.

    • I use this only as a router only since I now have NBN services. It's fttp so the ADSL function is turned off.

This is an amazing device, regardless of the fact that it does double duty as a modem and router. Firmware and wireless connection is very stable and I've never had to reset it. Uptime 5 months and counting…

The only downside is that being an ADSL modem router there is no way of changing the firmware to an open source one like DD WRT.

      • so this is compatible with NBN?

        • yes, compatible with fttp and fttn

  • Was going to get one yesterday - $50 ebay credit. Thanks OP, got this one.

    • Hey mate, I qualified for the 50 bucks but haven't received s mail with a coupon code yet. Did you get a mail with a coupon code or was it a generic coupon tied to your account?

      • I didn't get an email either. It's a generic code from what I can remember when someone here posted it and what I found right at the bottom of "my ebay" page.

I believe when you shop logged in on ebay, it gives you the regular price and the price minus the $50 with a find out how link. It did fo me, at least once.

This is all on the desktop site. My app shows nothing and same for the mobile site.

        • Thanks for the info, the code is "CGET50" and is linked to the ebay account.

      • +1

Generic coupon tied to your account. Go to My eBay and scroll to the bottom, you will see your coupon code there.

Great price! I use this router and its fantastic. m

I'm currently using the D7, is it worth upgrading to the D9?

    • +5

skip it and wait for D11

  • +2

Bugga I’ve been shopping around for a good price on a vdsl router. Might have to go for the d7000 off ebay

  • +1

I have a fritzbox 7270 which is about 4/5 years old, is this a significant upgrade?

    • +2

I remember those on internode! Yes it would be. For starters the D9 has 11AC, gigabit Ethernet and USB 3.0. At my place we have lots of gadgets (and therefore connections) and the bulk of content consumption has also shifted significantly to streaming in the last 5 years. The D9's hardware (and new firmware) are much better at this type of usage assuming yours is similar. The additional bells and whistles features like guest networking etc over the fritz would just be icing.

  • +1

Anyone tried connecting a external hdd into the usb3 port? What's the performance like?

    • +3

      Hi there vash12,

According to CNET the read speed is 23.26 Mbps and write speed is 13.41 Mbps using this setup: "Storage was tested over gigabit LAN with a SanDisk Extreme NTFS formatted 64GB USB 3.0 drive plugged into the fastest USB slot, transferring a 100MB file via SMB."

Comparatively it falls far behind the Asus DSL-AC68U (which has a going price of $288.75) and the Linksys XAC1200 ($219)

I hope this answers your question :)

      • Can I also ask if the HDD goes into sleep mode if it is not accessed for a little while? I would like to put a HDD into the USB port to share media files but don't want it to be on 24/7.

Currently have multiple HDDs connected to various media players around the house but would like to streamline these into one.

        Cheers.

  • +1

Very good price for a fantastic modem!

  • anyone use this for NBN? i will be moving to a new house, and planning to have internet connection. i am not a tech savvy guy, wondering, if this would be suitable for NBN connection in a home? Thank you

    • +1

      Yes, from my post :)

      • Suitable for ADSL/2/2+ and NBN

Which provider are you thinking of connecting with?

      • it is a kind of monopoly in my new estate, i can either go with iinet or iprimus… no other one else :(

        • -2

          Which estate is it

        • sounds more like duopoly.

either could be worse than Fuzenet!

      • I am currently on ADSL2+ but NBN is coming to the area (currently TPG is hooking to houses down the road).

Are there different NBN standards and so this unit may not suit all NBN providers?

        Cheers.

  • +1

Can vouch for these guys. Got the last deal delivered pronto.

  • +2

deoesnt the NBN require a VDSL modem or is that built into the ntu?

    • Did you ever find out if this modem router has VDSL?

  • +1

Thanks! I was waiting for a deal on this router - need to order one for my parents.

  • +1

Got this from them previously. Wireless1 was no hassle to buy from. TP link tried to deny that there was a bonus offer on an NC200, although when prompted they 'sent it anyway to make me happy'…

Would have liked the nc220 but the nc200 was what was available at the time :) NC200 only missing night vision. But I don't think there's good baby monitoring software anyway, which was the main reason I wanted night vision. Oh well.

  • +1

Shame nobody makes a great modem/router with built in VoIP.

    • Billion does. Let's see if they come up with the next one with AC

  • +1

I wish my router died just now instead of month ago. Bought replacement router from these guys and they were quick. Can recommend.
Anyone want to unload the camera? Looking to buy 2 at the OPs recommended price.

    Cheers

    • Hey Billy77, you still interested in the camera? PM me if so.

  • +1

If this one come with PPTP server and support DLNA. then I definitely will buy one

    • +1

      Hi onebee,

This is pulled from the manufacturer datasheet, supports "VPN Passthrough: PPTP, L2TP, IPSec Passthrough".

Media found on a USB plugged into the back can be discovered via DLNA (supported devices and apps only)

      • Thank you for reply. I mean is PPTP server. Not VPN passthrough. There is not too much home router with original firmware will support PPTP server.

For DLNA maybe you are right.

  • omg damnit and i only just opened my D7 box from W1 today… not that I could've swapped for the D9 anyway -_-

  • +2

On the online form page for the free camera, at the bottom is a check box to like them on Facebook and you "get one extra gift" … anyone know what this is?

    • +1

interested in knowing the answer to this as well..

      • +1

Me three. Reps, are you able to find this one out if possible?

        • +1

          Hey guys,

I have asked the manufacturer about this and will let you know if they let me post

        • +2

@ExpiredTofu: If its same as other Promos from TP-Link, you get a TP-Link Ball Point Pen or similar TP-Link stationary product as free. Worth probably less than a $1, but still it does not hurt to like their FB page. TP-Link AU team is pretty good :)

        • +1

          @regenade:

Haha, i was hoping for another bonus camera :-P

    • +1

Last time when i redeemed for the ip camera, i got two cardholder things that go in your wallet. Maybe the gift will be different this time.

Does anyone have a guide to allow Chromecast to play Netflix video with this modem?

    • +1

      Hi Ronnnie,

Here's a video tutorial on Youtube that shows how the Chromecast can be configured to work with your Modem Router.

Edit: here's another guide I found, this time with pictures and text to help you out

      • +1

Thanks, not exactly what I meant.

Others seem to be having same issue with Chromecast and this router.
        http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2339734

        • +1

          Hi Ronnnie,

My mistake, let me get back to you about this! I will have a chat with the manufacturer for you.

        • I have a C7 (router only) and configured the firewall rules to block Google DNS from going to the Chromecast. Had to first make sure the Chromecast would get a specified IP address by reserving via mac address.

So I'm hoping I can do the same thing with this D9.

        • @ExpiredTofu:

So is it possible to block Google DNS on Chromecast using D9?

        • @dorian_gray: Yes, just put in a static route for Google DNS to your gateway IP

  • +1

I salute you my man! :)

  • +2

Long time no see ccrap :)
    Good deal.

    • +2

Hey Gaggy! Thanks mate! Yes been a while, busy with work and travels but always keep an eye on my favourite site. Hope you're well :)

      • +1

yea. all good mate. Have a great long weekend.

  • whats a good cheap outdoor IP camera to get? No pref for wireless.

    • +1

      Hi btdroppedbox,

If you are after a decent and cheap IP camera I would suggest the TP-Link NC200 (current going price $34.99).

Unfortunately it does not have night vision like the NC220 that you get through the Archer D9 redemption, but it is still a great IP camera for it's price.

*Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) push button for easy network setup Instantly eliminate dead zones and expand your home’s wireless network
*Instantly eliminate dead zones and expand your home’s wireless network

      • Got the NC200 earlier this year. Resolution is crap. Might be useful if you need a wifi extender. However, as a video camera forget it, find something else.

    • +1

      Hi btdroppedbox,

We also have the Netgear VMS3230 Arlo 2 Camera Kit which is currently going for $375.

This is a true outdoor IP camera with battery operated power for completely wireless surveillance.

    +1 for the effort.

    great effort for OzBargain community

How does the wifi compare to the TP-Link TD-W8980? The W8980 wifi is extremely poor even with directly line of sight.

    • the 2.4ghz range is excellent.

      5ghz range is ok.

      • Hi,

I am running a TP LINK W8960N at the moment (http://www.msy.com.au/qld/slackscreek/peripherals/5947-tp-li…). I have replaced one of the antenna with a 10 dBi antenna. The range is quite good with the replaced antenna (can connect 20 metres away through the ceiling). It is also quite stable. However, I am having trouble with my ASUS O PLay Air Media Player getting consistent speed though I am not sure if it is the ASUS unit or the router is at issues as other devices are fine at longer distances.

A newer unit from TP LINK now has USB port - http://www.msy.com.au/qld/slackscreek/peripherals/5953-tp-li…

The D9 is 4 x the price, and I am wondering if it would be worth the cost.

        Cheers.

  • Kicking myself! Got the Netgaer D6400 just the other day…

  • +1

Anyone use one of these with TPG?

    • I do on ADSL2+

      • Happy with it compared to your previous modem+router device?

        • +1

Very much so. I was using a billion 7800nl. Range is greatly improved. Noticed a decent speed increase as well. Although it could be contributed to the tired billion, I'd still recommend this modem router.

        • @That Guy:
          Whoops 7800n not nl

  • How does this compare with the Netgear R7000?

    • +1

That doesn't have a modem (not for ADSL). You will need a seperate modem unless you're on FTTP NBN.

You might want to compare it against the Asus RT-AC68U. These two are within the $200 price point, and have very similar features.

(there's also a $25 cashback on the ASUS, making it cheaper than the R7000)

  • +2

This has a Boradcom chipset in it, unlike the Asus, which are great if you're on a long line (think over few kms from the exchange). Something to consider if you're looking to purchase.

  • Honestly how is this brand comparing to Asus? For my personal preference, have always opted for asus for their support and reliability, albeit paying more. For an example, asus pce-ac68 wireless Windows 10 driver has officially rolled out where as tplink t9e pce card still pending Windows 10 release, my point is, asus support seems quite proactive with regards to rolling out updates.

  • huhuy… wanna buy it.. but is it compatible with Windows 10?

    • -4

nah only compatible with win 95.

    • +4

Just in case you are actually serious… Yes it is.
What operating system you are running has no effect on the router, not sure why you would think it does..

  • someone asked about usb sharing, here is relevant review:
    http://www.itpro.co.uk/broadband/24498/tp-link-archer-d9-ac1…

  • Cheers for the effort

  • Ordered one. Been a while my modem gets disconnected every now and then. Cheers
