Preordering a Nexus 5X from Google Store US?

Hi fellow Ozbargainers,

I've got a good mate in US who's willing to preorder the phone for me and get it shipped to Oz. This will theoretically save me up to 100 bucks. (Pardon me if this calculation is faulty.)

However will there be risks around this? I'm willing to forfeit the warranty since I've got a Galaxy Nexus and a Nexus 5 and except that I broke the glass on my Nexus 5 they are among the sturdiest things I've got.

I'm more concerned about, e.g. signal band, custom, or jet cargo delivery?

Whaddayathink?

  • Personally, I don't find the Nexus 5X to be worth it at all.
    US$500 = AU$711
    (not including shipping)

With $711, you can get a LG G4, or Samsung S6 with money to spare. (Also doesn't have 2GB of RAM)

Nexus 5X is US$379 instead of US$500. I reckon you are actually referring to Nexus 6P which starts at US$499?

      Cheers anyway.

  • Hi songford - Could you please help me in shipping process, which courier you have used, appox cost etc.. I have mate in US who can help me

    Nexus6p-64G 549.00 USD = 767.068 AUD (+shipping) > shouldn't be equals to AUD 999

    • so lets take your calculation: 767.70
      GST $76.70
      Total : $844.40
      Dollar Fluctuation protection: $50
(as in price remains same no matter what dollar does, as its a US company, everything will be priced based on USD)
      Total $894.40

So we are paying $100 more but that to me would be the retailer profit margin (when sold in retailers, but essentially pocketed by Google in Aus)
As in i suspect the wholesale buy price for a retailer will be around 890-900AUD

Be aware the Nexus devices in the US will have slightly different bands than the ones being released in Aus

    LTE band 1(2100), 2(1900), 3(1800), 4(1700/2100), 5(850), 7(2600), 12(700), 13(700), 17(700), 20(800), 25(1900), 26(850), 29(700) - American model

    Australia is getting this model:
    LTE band 1(2100), 2(1900), 3(1800), 4(1700/2100), 5(850), 7(2600), 8(900), 9(1800), 17(700), 18(800), 19(800), 20(800), 26(850), 28(700), 38(2600), 40(2300), 41(2500)

i work in the industry and i had training on the nexus yesterday and we asked why we couldn't just buy one from US
the Google trainers explained that the US model 4G won't work on telstra or optus 4G (bands match but freq don't or something)

So yeah, thought i would share this info just in case

    I think it relates to 28 (700) and 29 (700)

    • Thanks for this very informative reply.

Yeah that's my major concern at this stage. It always works out like the rest of the world goes this way and US will go another way. No exception when it comes to communication industry.

Duh. Maybe I shouldn't try this hot dish first. Don't know if it's nasty yet.
