  • Victoria seems to be changing a lot of ridiculous laws recently, I wish WA did the same.

Saying that, I regularly lane filter - the police bikes do it too.

WA needs to legalize MMA "cage fighting" (yet MMA in a boxing ring is legal?!?).

    • Just had a listen to the roads minister on 3AW. Another change is motorbikes will be allowed to overtake a slow moving vehicle on the left as long as there are parked cars to the left of the motorbike. You cannot overtake on the left if there's a curb on your left. No idea what difference it would make either way.

maybe because that's the bicycle lane? I rarely pass on the left, only if there is no room for a bike to pass through the middle.

        • What if there's plenty of room between the outside of the bicycle lane and car? Anyway, we'll apparently be seeing and hearing plenty of commercials before then to make the public aware of the changes. By the way, these changes don't apply to L platers.

        • @tightarse: Just need to watch out for a car trying to turn left into a parking spot.. or turning left.. bit of a given but can be dangerous given some sporadic drivers out there

        • @28kb: Ye, good point. Reading through some forums, car drivers are irate at the changes. Rear view mirror clipping & car dents biggest concern.

      • Probably about the risk of being doored and injuring pedestrians.

    • I'd argue the Perth CBD is one big cage fight at night :P

Pretty sure NSW and QLD have already done this.

They are only allowed to weave through slow moving, or stationary traffic; but I have no doubt a number of them will still try this at speed. Motor bike riders should always ride defensively; it is hard for motorists to anticipate and adjust with the way motorbikes accelerate. I lost my brother to a motorbike accident; it was totally not his fault but it didn't stop him being dead. I've had to take that phone call; believe me you do not want your loved ones to receive it. If you insist on riding then make sure you donor card is up to date; the only good thing about my brother's death was he lives on in other people.

      • Ride to be seen, be it defensively or offensively. I personally have had more 'near misses' and one quite bad accident when I was riding with the flow of traffic and blending in.

Also, as a rider it is important not to let cars dictate your position on the road. Often you see riders (especially learners) hog the left side of the lane to allow easy passing by cars but all this encourages is rushed and risky overtaking manoeuvres by the car drivers. Stick to the right side of your lane and make the cars pass you like they would any other car.

  • As long as they educate Victorian drivers, In NSW they introduced it with next to no advertising, i cope abuse every now and then from uneducated drivers that take offence, yeah it sucks being stuck in traffic… not as much as being rear ended by a dinosaur in a cage!
