Jetstar trouble - What are my rights?

Long story short, I paid additional fee to get three seats adjacent to each other in a return Jetstar flight from Syd to Bne. On the return trip, flight gets cancelled and they rebooked us into a Virgin Airlines flight two hours later. And apparently, one of us has to sit away from other two.

What are my rights now? Can I escalate to Jetstar, and are they obliged to pay me back?

I like you attitude towards money nocure.
Please feel free to send me lots of yours for stuff that I don't provide you - I am sure you will just shrug it off since you will still be alive.

Thank you nocure for your wise words! I am already starting to feel better. Please tell me Jetstar is taking all this money from users and donating to charity. Happiness isn't good for me, I demand euphoria!

        Money can't buy you happiness.
        PS.I hate flying.

  • no, they don't have to pay you back. there will be a clause in the terms and conditions which you acknowledged/signed stating that if you had to go on another flight then they can't promise you your booked seat and if they can't then then they don't have to refund you.

however, why don't you call them and ask if you can get a credit for the preferred seating fee. which, out of curiosity, was how much?

maybe change the title. It's not really trouble. it was an inconvenience. and you may have lost a few coffees worth of $$.

    • I did raise a query, and got a mail saying their SLA is 15 days :)

Now, its not just about the amount. Lets compare it with a similar airline - tiger. While they ask you for extra money for convenient seats, if you choose to ignore it and proceed, you will come to know your seat numbers upon doing web check-in and you have an option to pay them and change the seats at that point in time if they are not convenient.

For Jetstar, I did not pay initially for nearby seats, and when doing we check-in, they still don't tell you what your seat numbers are. They say, seat numbers will be allocated only after you check-in based on their convenience, so you are forced to pay to ensure you get seats together. I think that's not fair!

That's a cash-raking little trick they have incorporated into their booking system, which I have not seen in any airlines before.

I don't want them to take users for granted when they do all these little tricks to charge for extras by concealing information which otherwise is readily available to them period.

It's not about what is fair or not, it is about what is written in the terms and conditions.

      • Correct - but you can check in online a day or so before the flight, and select your seats.

        • No you cannot, without paying for the seat. That's the whole point of the discussion.

      • Why are you comparing Tiger and Jetstar? Each carrier can choose to operate how they wish in terms of their pricing structure/arrangements.

        • Fair enough.

Consumers have the right to compare and and I believe it would be beneficial for anyone who has to choose between these two in future.

At exactly the same initial price point, you don't have to pay extra during check-in, in Tiger while you do, in Jetstar, period.

They did this to me. They will refund your fee on request if they haven't already done so.

Yes , when Jetstar cancelled a flight on me whilst overseas
They paid accommodation and gave me a voucher.
I found them to be very helpful.
Id suspect they'd refund the extra payment you made

You’re kidding crapstar is a joke

my mum and sister went to Hawaii and a day before they were to depart I got a text saying the flight was cancelled and to call up Jetstar to chance flight, by the time I got through all flights on that day were booked so they had to stay another night,

They give you a $150 credit for hotel (trying finding a hotel the day before for $150USD) and meal money

My mum booked a room where she was staying cost her $220 us when I put in the claim for the $220 US dollars Jetstar said the most they can give is $150 us dollars

I lodged a dept. fair trading complaint and they got back to me with the they only give $150 Us per night for accommidation, I told the bloke you try finding accomidation for $150 US a night, he goes I can pay $48 odd dollars and go to the tribunal

      What a joke crapstar is

  • Perhaps seating should be like Southwest Airlines. It's basically a bus service. They let groups enter the aircraft to pick a seat. Usually all the aisle seats go first.
Next group enters and climb over the aisle seats to grab the windows.
When the last groups enter, they are separated and spread allover.
And at this point if there is no cabin storage left, remaining carry on gets taken to the hold.
So, how do you get into the first groups I hear you ask ? Check in early and take your place at the gate.

  • I got the money refunded by JS. Thanks folks!
