Flying to KL via Air Asia X

Booked some flights for our family of 4 to go to KL in March next year. 2 Adults, 1 Kid, 1 Infant. I checked school holiday times (after the fact), and we essentially fly out before school holidays start and come back two weeks after, during the Easter weekend. I was after some advice, re: infant. She will be 16 months old by then, and we also have a rather precocious 3 year old (3.5 years in March). So far, we've booked the bassinet seats and paid for the row with extra legroom. Husband thinks we should book another seat for the infant/toddler. Not ideal, money-wise, but might be the difference between a good flight and a nightmarish flight.

So, given the travel dates, late night flight departing (not during school holidays) and afternoon flight returning (during school holidays), should we get a 4th seat? Do we have a good chance of getting extra room / seats if the flight isn't full?

  • I don't particularly like it, but have you tried OptionTown? You can bid for options such as (empty rows). Maybe just bid for a empty row on top of what you already have. I don't think the "Business class" bidding is worth it though. I've never been upgraded, but the parents have had a few business class (flatbet) flights on AirAsiaX.

There is a good chance of you getting a spare seat (in empty flights), but not if you have children with you. You will be preoccupied putting them into their seats. Generally hot seats don't sell out, but that is for Perth-KL flights. So you might be okay (spreading throughout the hotseat area (the chairs headrest is red).

Let me know if you need more help.

    • I've signed up to optiontown before, and they were very spammy. So, I never worked out how it works. Can you give me a quick summary?

We have already booked 3 hot seats. If I decide to get another seat, I will have to change my booking, (3-in the middle aisle) and I'm not sure how that would work with AA's booking management site, i.e. if it could be done.

Hubby and I are joking about booking the 4th seat in the quiet zone and leaving the other person with the two children. :P

Make your toddler bother the people who book the Hot Seats around you and they will probably move (if the flight isn't full). You will have the seats for free! Haha.

Seriously, I don't think booking an extra seat will help a restless toddler - s/he'd probably want to cuddle up to you.

  • 4-4 doesn't really help, guys! 😅

  • Why book seats ? I didn't and they sat my kids away from us. Best flight ever.
But seriously last time I flew with air Asia they wouldn't let anyone take the spare red seats even those in the red seats (some empty rows) - but you could go over the other seats.

  • I'm heading off next year with my family, anyone know why they recommend a 3 hour arrival prior to departure? I will really struggle to keep my children calm waiting for this amount of time;

    Check-in counters (International Flights)

Open: 3 hours before the scheduled time of departure
Close: 1 hour before the scheduled time of departure

Check-in deadlines may vary at different airports and for particular flights. Airports have long queues due to complex security checks. We suggest that you check-in early and proceed immediately to the departure gate or you may risk being left behind in security.

    • I'd get there at least 2 hours before the flight. Getting through customs and immigration can be a pain and will take a while. It often takes a good hour, particularly in Australia.

3 Hours is to give people a buffer so they aren't rocking up later.

Also the plane boards about 30 minutes or so before take off. So it doesn't leave a lot of time. Last time I flew on AAX, I checked in 2 hours before the flight and only got to the gate about 10 minutes before boarding.

    • Don't risk it. Aim for 3 hours. If you get there late they will not check you in.
