Someone is Using My Mobile Number to Scam People

Hi dear Ozbargainers ,

I have been receiving calls from different companies including telephone , internet , gas and electricity and more with regarding debts which i never
had with them .this person has used my mobile number to obtain these connections and i am getting these calls since last 5 months . first i ignored and politely informed them that they have got wrong person and it stopped for a while.In last 3 weeks the calls started coming in and this has really started annoying me. What are my options ? Can anyone pls help .I am not disclosing his name here as it might be breach of privacy although i do not know him or heard about him in my life .Does anyone has similar experiences ?

FYI i have had this number for over 8 years .

    Could be your brother liquid snake using an alias =P

    Anyway, I think it would be wise to report it to the police as they might have heard of this person before or perhaps assist you in finding that person in some way?

    Thanks projectzero , I was thinking the same( about reporting). Fyi , i got rid of liquid , remember, was funny though.

    Report to Police. If the cheat has got gas and electricity connections, their physical address will be available with the providers. May be Police will be able to sort the things easily for you.

    I suppose the options would be

    1. change number
    2. Inform them that this person is giving out your number and "Do not contact me again"
    3. Change your voicemail, forward all calls not in your address book to the voicemail that explains the situation.

    Start with Veda and request a free copy of your credit file to see if any damage done yet. Unfortunately the onus is on you to prove it wasn't you.

    I had the same problem.

    It takes patience to keep telling people that they have the wrong number (my scumbag lady uses my number every three months when she changes electricity suppliers and the old one comes looking for money!), but most are pretty good.

    I asked the persistent ones to do a reverse phone check (http://www.reverseaustralia.com/ is a good one), and they all went away after that.
