Woof filler swelling when painted.

Hi guys, does anyone have any idea what is happening with my filler? I'm renovating my (100 year old) house at the moment, and I have filled holes in the skirting boards, doors and windows with a water based wood filler. Its the same filler I used on my floors before I polished them, with no issue. Anyway having spent a couple of weeks filling throughout the house, I've just got around to painting my skirting boards with a water based enamel paint (Pascal white satin). The paint is working perfectly, until I come to a section of filler. It has some weird reaction with the filler, and the filler reverts from rock hard to mushy (like it was in the tub) and the paint sometimes peels, or the filler just swells up and bubbles underneath. Has anyone had a problem like this? Is there a solution?

Thanks

Probably should seal the filled areas before applying the top coat and ensure the filler is completely dry.

  • The filler has been dry for weeks. What would you recommend as a top coat?

  • Dulux has a sealer and primer in one …ask at the bunnings paint counter.

      cheers

  • Most likely be you have a damp problem. The filler is water based so if the wood is damp then the filler will absorb the water, and wont set.

You said its around the skirting boards so thats the lower part of the room, where the water will be most likely to settle. Could be rising damp or maybe a leak from the roof where water seeps down the wall and settles

Try a resin based filler and see if that sets.

If so you may need to check you dont have a damp problem

    • Nah it's not damp. These fillers are sanded back and are powder. They are rock solid and not damp in anyway. It's also happening on skirt board that has been removed from the wall.
