PC won't start...On & OFF loop non stop (CLOSED)

Hi all,

My PC suddenly won't start/boot today (first time ever). It just goes on and off by itself in a non-stop loop like the video link below:

https://youtu.be/T3NsqGi1pgw

What's the issue here? PSU or Mobo? Or something else?

My PC specs are as below: Asrock B75 PRO3M, Intel I5 (can't remember chipset), 8GB ram, Antec Neo ECO 520C PSU, Gigabyte AMD HD 7800. Running Win 7 Ultimate 64bit

Appreciate if anyone could help. Thanks!

THREAD CLOSED..moved to https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/212983 in regard to getting new mobo

    Please try the following.

    1. Reset the BIOS. Unpower the desktop (remove power cable) and then removing CMOS battery. Leave unpowered for 12 seconds. Then replace battery.

    2. Reseat the RAM, GPU and all power connectors. If you have any spare RAM sitting around, try using the spare memory.

    3. Attempt to boot without graphics card and other non-essential parts. Switch over to integrated HDMI port.
Unplug all SATA drives and remove power supply cable from all HDDs and GPU. Your goal now is to have the PC power on and stay powered on, and hopefully display the mobo logo on the screen

PC still doesn't boot? You'll now need to suspect either a bad motherboard or a bad power supply.

Test the power supply unit it a different computer. Does it boot? If so, your mobo is faulty. Does it not boot? Your power supply is faulty.

Have you tried turning it off and … no wait nvm.

  • I didn't watch the video, but is the power button getting stuck/jammed?

    • definitely not

  • Process of elimination…
Can you boot to the bios? If not then try this…
If your mobo has onboard graphics remove the graphics card, disconnect all drive cables and remove all but one stick of ram. If it still does the same thing swap the ram stick.

If still no good then see if you can borrow a psu from a friend.

Can be many things, just have to eliminate the possibilities.

YouTube says your video is private. Flip! Just beaten to it.

  • This happened to me a while back I tried many things, then I finally managed to reset the bios and it was okay, there is a small battery on your motherboard removing that should reset the bios

  • Running Win 7 Ultimate 64bit

there you go … the computer has finally said enough is enough! :)

Listen for the sequence of beeps the MB will make. May be an LED light on the MB in place of a beep. Now google beep codes for your MB. You will know where the boot process is failing.

    edit:

    Beep Code Descriptions
1 short Memory refresh timer error.
    2 short Parity error.
3 short Main memory read / write test error.
    4 short System timer failure.
    5 short Process error.
6 short Keyboard controller BAT test error.
    7 short General exception error.
    8 short Display memory error.
9 short ROM BIOS checksum error.
10 short CMOS shutdown Read/Write error.
    11 short Cache Memory bad.

    Condition Beeps Code Debug Code
Normal 1 short beep after POST With goodnight LED enabled, debug code will disappear after the beep.
Bad CPU No beep No debug code
    Bad memory No beep 45
Without memory 3 long beeps 53
Without CPU No beep(No Power) No debug code
Without VGA card 5 long beeps Beeps at”d6”, then show "0d"

2nd edit: 4 short … try reseating your RAM modules.

It sounds like your power connector is loose in the socket. Unplug the tower & re-seat the power connector. If it's one of those 24 pin which is actually 20+4, be sure they're completely seated.

    Cheers

    • This!

Just did it on a friends computer 5 minutes ago.

Can you unmark your video as private? That way I can have a look

    • I watched the video when it was uploaded to a file locker. Was basically the PC fans turning on and off and on and off. Couldn't hear any sound.

    • how do i do that? lol

  • Ok I'm almost 99% certain the mobo is fried…my friend who is quite techy agree too..

What recommendation you have for good mobo <$200? Guess I might skip AsROCK, looks quite cheap for me. Can't believe the mobo fried after just over 2 years..

The case is Thermatake V9 and my GC is AMD HD 7800 series

    • What makes you say that?

It isn't getting any power…Or not much at least.

      I reckon it's the PSU.

If your computer is only 2 years old then you'll still have a warranty on most of the parts

  • So a fried motherboard would cause the fans to stop working? I was thinking the PSU may need attention or replacing.

    • hmm ok..you may be right..ah screw that change them all then haha

  • My guess is that ur graphics card would most likely to cark it first than ur mobo. Take the graphic card out and try booting the comp. If it still restarts it could be a faulty power supply. It could also be a flat bios battery. Also it could be the cpu getting hot. Try removing the graphic card first. If you have a sound card remove that too if removing the graphic doesn't stop the rebooting.

    • Took out the gc, same shit

      • Try realigning the power supply it sounds like that is the problem.

  • `Try removing your CMOS battery for 30 minutes, then reset your CMOS (usually a button or jumper setting on the motherboard). This usually does the trick. If your CMOS battery is old try replacing it altogether.

    • àlso remove all cords and power cables, then keep trying to turn the pc on until it just wont anymore, to rid it of power completely, then do the above.

      • Tried this. Removed and replaced with new one. Pretty sure my mobo is nearing it's life. Had a feeling this asrock mobo just built for price.. Don't build to last. So the warranty for mobo is 1 or 3 years

        • did you reset the CMOS?

        • @nikkirose: yea did that pin 2&3 thingy

        • @Droid11: `well that is the usual fix, all you can do now is test with know working psu, cpu and mobo.

  • So which mobo I should buy? Since ebay got 15% off, might as well buy now

  • If your current power supply is fully seated & you still have this issue, then the cheapest fix to try is a new power supply. You might even get a local shop to let you buy/try— and if that isn't the trouble, bring it back & buy the new parts from them.

I'll tell you now though— I replace soooo many with the exact, same issue you're having.

    Good luck.
