Recommendations for a Vacuum That WORKS!

I couldn't decide if electrical, or here, was better to post this. I think here, because more 'homemakers' will read it.

The vacuum cleaner I have is absolutely pathetic. The carpet is in fairly good condition, but it's kind of flat in many areas. But I have the same problem where it's not flat too…

Any cotton that falls off clothes/socks - it can't pick it up. You have to bend down, pull the cotton off the carpet, drop it again, vacuum again, and even then it often still can't pick it up. You have go back and forth over every bit a dozen times. It takes hours to vacuum - it's driving me nuts.

Can anyone with a similar experience recommend a vacuum cleaner they've switched to that just works!? If I have a choice, I'd prefer not to be buying bags all the time.

Thanks for reading.

  • +1 for Miele. We have an old Miele Cat and Dog Plus bagged vacuum that we picked up off Gumtree, and it is awesome.

  • payed around $800 for our Dyson.
omly because the wife really wanted one.
Im the one that vacuums. I still don't think it's worth the money.
    No way

  • As with so many other post-ers, A powerhead or an upright will clean carpets better than other machines. If you turn over any carpet sample in a flooring store, they will all say please clean this carpet with a good upright vacuum - the reason is that straight suction machines will only remove surface soiling, and not the sand and grit that over time cuts the pile of the carpet and leads to 'flat' looking high traffic areas (which aren't actually flat but have lost lots of pile).

I have bagged and bagless at home and they have plusses and minusses to both… the bagless is messier to empty and requires filter maintenance (Shark Rocket Deluxe Pro and Shark Rotator Powered Lift-Away) and I have a $1600 Sauber that has bags - cleaner to empty, Quieter but has ongoing consumables.

I would buy all machines again as they all have their charms - for $500ish the Rotator powered lift away would be the one I'd choose to keep if I could only have one… 5yr warranty too, the same as the Sauber at 3x the price.

  • Miele. Never misses a beat.

  • I was near a Godfreys so went in for a look. Boy, did they rubbish Miele - even though they sell them! I forget exactly what he said, but something about Miele is still using decades-old tech - i.e. the method of the filter they use I think he meant? He said it will cost more because it fills up quicker than whatever the other brands use now, which causes the suction to reduce - so you're changing it frequently.

You folks with Miele… Is that your personal experience?

If this why people are saying to get a German Miele - are they different somehow?

Everything else he said pretty much lines up with what has been said here. About getting a powerhead, for example.

Looked at Sauber too. It's supposed to be what was once known as Electrolux. Bit pricey, but… any opinions on that as a brand?

  • Hi Everyone.
I had a read of the posts above and I'm on the look for a good and reliable vacuum. Something with good a sucking power but also something rather easy to use. If I can avoid getting vacuum bags I will, but seems that the Dyson name is a lot of Hoohaa but is it worth the extra $$$.
So if you can suggest best vacuums, I'd be much appreciated.
