Condescending eBay Customer Service?

Hi guys and girls,

Just wanting an opinion on what you would do with this little issue. A while back during the ebay father's day sale there was a coupon code for CTREAT20 for 20% off certain retailers.

When I purchased a few items and applied the coupon code successfully in ebay it prompted me to a different browser to pay via paypal. Paypal showed it as the full price and I thought - previously paypal will show the full price but the invoice will state 80% is paid from my bank account and 20% from the ebay voucher. So I went ahead and paid it.

I only checked my bank accounts recently and found that I had paid the full amount instead and asked ebay for a credit refund on their behalf.

I had sent a message outlining what happened and believe I was not rude at all (happy to show the unedited message with all the typo's etc) and instead received this message in reply.

Hi _____,

Thank you for contacting us back about the CTREAT20 voucher.

Upon looking into the transaction details, I can see that these items are from the sellers "onlyonline " and "futu_online". I've checked the Terms and Conditions of this particular voucher to verify and I found out that this voucher is only exclusive at participating stores on eBay. Since the sellers you bought from are not one of the participating sellers, the coupon did not apply to your purchase.

Moving forward, I suggest that you first read the Terms and Conditions before purchasing an item to make sure that it's eligible for the said coupon.

If you want to revisit the Terms and Conditions for CTREAT20 voucher, you may refer to this link:

I wish you all the best for your future transactions with us. Thank you for choosing eBay.

Warm Regards,

The customer rep had in fact made a mistake because the items I bought were from Futu Online and Online only which are on the list (M and O) respectively. I understand everyone makes mistakes but was the customer rep being condescending in her reply with "Moving forward, I suggest…" comment? It makes her look like a fool because she didn't read the T&C so carefully herself and was advising me to do so.

EDIT: The items I bought and my outline of what happened to the rep. http://imgur.com/a/czLME

TL:DR
I bought items during ebay sale and coupon code did not apply correctly. Asked ebay for a refund and was met with some condescending remarks. I understanding everyone makes mistakes but it wasn't necessary. Am I being sensitive and what would you guys do?

Send back a condescending reply and suggest that they read their own T&C… and outline M and O.

Or send back a polite reply highlighting that the sellers were indeed participating sellers and politely suggest exactly what they can do to resolve the situation for you.

Make it easy for them the help you, thank them for their time, give them the benefit of the doubt that they aren't trying to fob you off or purposely upset you.

They may have stuffed up, they may have not seized the opportunity to blow you away with great customer service, but at the end of the day you want your 20% back by expending as little effort as possible.

        Good advice IMO

        • Yes, that's probably better advice. I immediately +1's gomertose because that's what I would do, but it's better to get what you need than to get revenge I guess.

Surprised that you found that condescending enough to make a forum post about it.

I was only really after witty comebacks that people might come up with. My friend suggested I write "moving backards, i suggest…"

And I work in customer service too and no way would i say that to a customer.

I like the moving backwards part.

        • I'm more curious about moving backards

Fact is ebay just dont care about individual buyers or sellers.

These days all they care about about big brand retailers

Regardless of the outcome, you will buy from ebay again, and they know it.

  • "Moving forward" sounds like an american.. They say it all the time.

    • More like typical business/management-speak

      • Moving forward, we cant afford to go backwards in this paradigm

We must hit the ground running while maintaining full synergy at this point in time (ie let's do stuff now).

If we have all our ducks in a row and sing from the same hymn sheet, we can pick some low-hanging fruit and get some quick wins on the board.

    How much did u pay?

OP you made a mistake. Get over it. Ebay is so simple and already dumbed down enough, thank you.

Moving forward, perhaps you should get a friend to help you next time you purchase something online.

  • What PayPal says is what you pay pal. Lesson for the future.

  • How would you have phrased what we was trying to tell you?

    • Should've gone to Specsavers !!

      • Damnit, just noticed, refreshed, can't go back! I'm sick today… :(
