The union also pledged to not check tickets on trains on Grand Final day. The action was lodged with the Fair Work Commission on Wednesday afternoon.

The union backed down last time but negotiations are on going.

So are the "Authorised officers" part of union ?

  • What is going on in Melbourne?

I have a PTV account because I bought a MyKi card on a holiday last year. I've received about 6 emails about 'industrial action' in the last 2 months.

Hope you folks are getting by okay.

Give me official government/operator word or under what legal basis the unions can declare travel to be "free" and then you have a deal.

Update: Channel 7 reports that "Metro workers will walk off the job and Ticket Inspectors will strike on the day of the big match" so on that basis I neg the deal because a media outlet has reported that there will be enforcement of fares on the day, not that it would need enforcement to still be fare evasion.

    • Metro workers - So it's "Free Public Transport…if you can drive a Train"?
Trams are run by Yarra Tram, Buses by various bus companies.

  • +3

    Not this again

  • Will never be a deal as the taxpayer will always flip the bill. (well i guess it would be for the unemployed).

    • Pick the bludgers

    • +3

Metro is privately operated. Taxpayers aren't paying the bills for the drivers salaries.

This dispute largely isn't over pay, but over working conditions of train drivers. (ie: Metro wants to be able to be able to change the schedules with less than a week's notice, and wants to be able to schedule workers to start their shift at one end of the city and finish their shift at the other end, with neither end being anywhere near where the workers might live.)

      • Metro still get paid as they are under contract to supply services, not under a commission to get a certain revenue share of the Myki fare. All Myki fares go to the Department of Transport, which offsets what the government pays to operators, if there is a shortfall (which their always is, as the fares are subsidised) the Taxpayers do pay. If revenue to Metro was purely fare-based, they wouldn't bother running services outside of peak times because it wouldn't be profitable to run trains with only a handful of people on board.

  • Sorry, cant endorse this kind of blackmailing action.

    • dont worry mate, the ticket validators will still be running, you can still tag on

Scum bag unions. Not a freebie (if you pay taxes).

    • +1

Except that they're not asking for more money from the taxpayer, just from the private, for profit company that runs the system.

    • That's like staying any freebie given out by a government organisation is paid by the tax payer.

      • Well…it is. Where else does the money come from? There's no magic money tree like the unions and Greens think.

  • This may not go ahead and the post will be updated as more reports are made.

This is not a deal then

    • It was last time.

      • Last time actually happened, should of posted when it's confirmed

  • +9

The public transport isn't free, it's just that no one will check your ticket.

Posting this as a deal is a bit like saying "there's going to be a day where the supermarkets don't have security guards, so all groceries are free that day!" — you're still committing a crime, you're just less likely to be caught for it.

    • +1

      Good point.

    • -1

It's an infringement not a criminal offence.

      • +1

But it is an offence under the Transport (Compliance and Miscellaneous) Act 1983.

Just because Metro staff might not be checking tickets, doesn't mean others won't be.
Police and Authorised officers may not be turning a blind eye on the day.

This is one for the forums at best.

        • The last deal didn't get moved to the forums until the union cancelled the industrial action.

      • +1

My understanding (for which I'm not a lawyer) is that this is true, unless you don't pay the infringement, in which case the infringement notice is withdrawn and you are charged with the criminal offense instead and it goes to court.

        • Yeah. That's kinda what I thought after my brief reading earlier.

        • -1

          It's called a regulatory offence.
The posting is like saying "Drive as fast as you want in Melbourne - The Police union have instructed their members not to issue traffic offences on Grand Final day"

        • @supabrudda:

Expect speeding kills. Fare evasion doesn't.

        • @sween64:
So robbing a bank is fine by you, as long as you don't kill anyone?

  • +2

    fare evasion

  • Bottom of the barrel attention seeking post. Just like the last time this was put up.

  • +1

Not again. This isn't even confirmed yet! and even if it was, it's illegal

  • +1

It's illegal to travel for "Free" even if Metro Staff walk off the job. Do remember that "Metro Authorized Officers" are not the only people who can check tickets, just FYI. Don't cry if you get fined on that day.

  • First Metro does not money from ticket sales. They only get set price contract price per performance targets. Second why Australian don't support their own work force. Metro is owned by Honk Kong which is Chineese backed money goes to china. Also all upper and middle managment are UK imports. So when calling people bludgers thinks of your kids future and support Australian workers.

  • Users need to read the rules regarding negative votes. The report button should be used more often.

    • +2

There are major issues with the "product"

    • +2

Perhaps you should read the deal posting guidelines and explain how this is actually a deal?

    • +1

it looks like the reporting button has been used a few times, but the Mods are ignoring their own guidelines.

Don't take it personally Sween64, the mob often gets it wrong.
