10% off Apple Computers at Dick Smith

500

Just the usual 10% off Apple computers at Dick Smith. But it lines up with the 10% extra value gift cards from Coles so you can get around 18% off.

I believe the GST will be charged on the discounted value of the computer rather than the amount paid for giftcards so you can take advantage of TRS for around 27% off the normal price.

256gb Macbook Pro:
* Originally $2099
* Now $1,889.10
* Pay $1700 for 17 Giftcards ($1870 value) and $19.10 remaining value, $1719.10 = 18.1% off.
* Less $181.74 GST from TRS = $1537.36 = 26.8% off.

    Excludes Apple products?

    • +1

      Looks like the discount is already incorporated in the price. 13" Retina MBP 128GB is $1,619 and before the discount I think it was around $1800.

      Does anyone know the website which advises you of when the best time to buy an apple product is vs the release cycles?

  • Great deal

  • Can TRS be claimed for items over $1000?

    • Yes

    • +4

      YES YOU CAN!!

      However your name and address must be on the receipt.

    • +2

      Yes, but there is a limit of $900 per passenger. This isn't usually stated.

      If you bring goods back into Australia that you have made a claim for a GST refund under TRS and the value of those goods (combined with any other overseas purchases) exceeds AUD $900, they must be declared to Australian Customs and Border Protection Services and the GST refund will have to be repaid. GST is payable on the entire value of the items, not just the amount that is over the AUD $900 limit. Penalties may apply to undeclared taxable goods.

        Usually not checked.

        They are more worried about seeds and food and meats.

        • +1

          and illegal pornography.

        • It is checked on the way out when you collect your TRS rebate. If you're (substantially?) over the amount the refund may get rejected.

        • They most definitely do check if it is on the way out. you will need both your receipt and proof, if on the way in it is a little more random, if you get selected for a check and your declaration doesn't match or you don't have receipts but are claiming it is was 50% off when you bought then you are up the proverbial, you will get assessed at retail value and you will get hit with a fine (at their discretion) in addition to GST.

        • @gravewax: You will never get "checked" for taking goods over $900 out of the country, unless you claim TRS. In which case if it's value is over $1000 you will need to have your name and address on the receipt.

      • +1

        Not very practical. 1. It will take lots of time and efforts to check the total value of all the goods in your luggage, which is difficult to judge. (what if I got it for 50% off ) 2. The TRS website actually said that total value of the goods including goods for tax refund should not exceed $900 when you bring them back to Australia. However, the laptops/mobile phones/DSLRs we take for travel nowadays would easily double or triple that amount. It should be fine for personal use, unless you are carrying 4 macbooks together, then you might be caught and fined.

        • True, but when you leave the country they check, prior to refunding you the GST.

        • @chonkie: When you say they 'check' well durr they have to check, to verify that the goods are with you and you are taking them OUT of the country.

          Coming in is another matter.

        • @chonkie: In theory, you should keep the invoice for any goods as a proof of both value and tax. For example, you took a macbook worth $1500 overseas for a conference. When you comes back, you have to prove that this macbook was not tax refunded in Australia or brought overseas. Therefore, you might have to declare this macbook before you leave Australia with an invoice first and show it to the officer when you comes back. This is too complicated. No one is doing that.

        • @Turd: Well I'm still technically correct. The best kind of correct.

        • @maxdba: I don't see how you could confirm that the MacBook wasn't brought overseas if you're bringing it into the country…

        • +1

          @chonkie: YES YOU ARE

  • Why do you say buy 17 cards? does the discount only apply on $100 gift cards?

    • You can sticky-tape the 17 micro-sd cards you have to the used gift cards so you don't lose them as easily. (I don't actually know what denominations Dick Smith giftcards come in, $100 was safe assumption)

    • $50 or $100 @ coles

  • Is this for iPads as well?

    • No. But the Air 2 64gb wifi is very cheap at $698 (rrp 829 at apple store), before 10% discount.

  • Why no macbook pro 15 inch in Dicksmith?

  • Do people know if david jones powered by dick smith have the same prices?
    Would be good to combine with the 10% ent book offer if they do. ;-)

  • Or you can use 15% most items + 10% extra value for gift cards for a nice juicy discount :)

    And then go overseas and claim back GST!

    • Isn't 15% off online only? can you use multiple gift cards online??

      • You surely can.

        Just bought an activity tracker and got 21% off due to 15% and gift cards.

        • How do we get 15%?, I don't see it.

          Edit found it "GET15OFF"

    • but you can't use the 15% on macs right

  • can you use multiple gift cards for a online purchase?

    • +3

      Yes you can. I used about 25 cards for one order earlier today.

  • Could the dse gift card which bought from coles be used to purchase apple product at dick smith store with (10% coles + 10% dicksmith), because i want to buy a macbook pro 15 which they dont have stock online

    • yes, just make sure you pre-scratch the pin numbers on the cards beforehand, otherwise you'll be in the line for a really long time.

      • Thank you, just to make sure because DSE always add their strict exclusion and apple always sit at the top @@

    Guys, beware that the giftcard balance might not get loaded correctly. I bought some DSE GF this morning from Coles, took them to DSE afterward just to find out my cards were only credited for the voucher amount ex the 10% bonus.
    When i went back to Coles, i was advised that the system may take "few" hours to update.
    I am regularly checking the cards balances online on DSE site but does not appear there is any progress.
    Might take the cards back tomorrow and get my refund.
    What a waste of time.

    • might've been unlucky. my bonus was uploaded straight away when i bought the gift cards last time.

      • Finally found a Coles with DSE giftcards. How doe they actually work, you buy the $50 card and they have $55 in credit loaded on it?

        • yes

        • You get 10% added value.

          $50 = $55 value
          $100 = $110 value

  • When do the sales end @ Dicksmith?

    • +1

      It's from 23/09/2015 to 27/09/2015.

        Thanks!!

  • Happy Days - Thanks for the heads up, I have just saved $ 62 using this trick, I also made use of my qantas pre loaded Master Card which I got a bonus of 500 points for loading with money, plus points for the transactions. So all in all one happy bunny here…….

  • "I believe the GST will be charged on the discounted value of the computer rather than the amount paid for giftcards"

    Can anyone verify this? Because my tax free period starts after next Wednesday, so I need to make sure the GST isn't on Coles' invoice. Thx

  • +1

    oh, I just bought my MBPr (didn't even open the package yet) from OfficeWorks by showing them the DSE price (1699) to beat it by 5%. I was so happy until I saw this post! :(

  • I notice that dick smith iphone 6 64gb is $1149 and while on apple store it is $1079!! i dont understand how they can sell it on more then apple store. i did contacted dick smith and they can not do anything about pricing. no point getting those vouchers from coles if they are going to play with prices like this. I guess such is dick smith!!

  • You can also scan your Flybuys card and get the equivalent of $0.25 to spend at coles for every $50 gift card you buy. It worked out well for me because I got sent an email offering triple points on largest spend, and bought $1700 worth of DSE gift cards.

    Does anyone know how often DSE does a 10% off Apple computers deal like this? My TRS period of 60 days starts literally the day after this deal ends. I'm sure I've seen these deals (JB hifi as well) come and go quite often but not sure if DSE would do it again in the 60 day period…I don't want to miss out on a good deal but don't want to buy and end up not using $1000+ worth of DSE gift card either :(

    • +1

      tough one, there's no way of being sure. there was one not even a few weeks ago when i bought mine, i think you'd be safe to wait for another within 60 days. remember you have a whole year to use the gift cards. worst you can sell them to someone for what you paid (because they are +10%) and get your money back and they get the bonus. or worse, you just get 10% off and not TRS, or just TRS and not gift card bonus. better than nothing!

    • +2

      I'd go through OZB and make a note of the dates on a spreadsheet, apply regression analysis and then analyse it using a pivot table.

      Seriously, although DSE announced they'd be doing less discounting of Apple products we're coming up into the Xmas season and if JB have frequent 10% off sales then DSE could respond in kind.

    • Great advice! thanks guys :D I might wait for a similar deal to come up during the 60 day period, hopefully there will be one as good as this one :)

  • called up Cole store to confirm whether they have Dick Smith gift cards in stock, and was told the gift cards are off the shelves for now due to error loading bonus 10% to cards. Staff took my number and promised to call once problem is rectified.

    • I just spent $1450 on the 50s at Coles World Square, checked each online and ensure they were loaded correctly and purchased a 128GB 13" MBP today.

      They had quite a few left there.However I don't think the DSE computer system is linked to whatever system validates the cards because the DSE dude had to manually enter in the amount. Sucks if you had 29 of them to enter.

      • I just bought a heap at Coles Rockingham/Warnbo ($50 cards was all they had, needed to go to two stores to get the amount I wanted) and used them to get an iPad Air 2 64GB and some other stuff and guy had to put them all though manually and receipt is ridiculously long…

        • ha, same here bought 22 $50 cards on George St Sydney store, then went to DS cross the road.
          ended up pay $1149.10 out of pocket to get an 128G MBA. Should also get $114 back via TRS. So $1035 for a 13inch MBA, not bad at all.

  • Is $2330 for Macbook Pro 15 256GB good deal?
