EB Game's favourite customers are unaware mothers, do you agree and ridiculous prices on new release.

Close to everytime i visit ebgames, there are mothers with there little children purchasing games and consoles for RRP, this makes me cringe, they could of saved $10 to up to $50 by purchasing it elsewhere, they also get sucked in to join EB world and unnecessary extras (eg. $2 disc cover)

They need to read either join ozbargin or compare stores.

What i have heard from employees about RRP

" We don't set the prices, the vendor does" well, how come it's $20 cheaper next door?

" Other stores are bigger, sell larger items such as TVs and stock much more items than us" ( assuming there trying to say, other stores can put out stuff cheaper because they can make it back from their other items?)

Look at your company, over 400 stores nationwide and runs a massive yearly gaming convention attended by hundreds.

    Yes, I agree.

    • EB Game's favourite staff are unaware children, do you agree?

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/203636

    • +4

yes, but and it's the little kids as well.

I seen mother's ask their children

"Which game do u you want?" or "console do you want"

Then they just buy it without knowing that some other store like Target, Big W is selling it cheaper.

      =====

Also I seen ppl go into JB HIFI and enquire about iPads and mobile phones and buy it from those sellers
without knowing that Target, Big W are having a deal and it currently much more cheaper..

      =====

Also read the story about EBgames abusing their staff.

      • Wow, 7/11 got a lot of flack for something I believe is less serious as some of the allegations here.

That said, if you're being treated like crap, just leave and find another job. It's not worth the time or effort to work there if you're not even being rightfully paid, treated well or getting a good reference.

        • I agree with you but not everyone can afford to do that. Have you ever considered how hard it is these days to find a job?

Once i wanted to volunteer at some charity (star something) and normally you'd think they'd want as much help as they can get but nooo, they rejected me on the spot saying im not qualified and stuff… and im not talking about work loads that you have to have a degree in, its those type where you deliver and hand out hampers to people and stuff…

        • +1

          @piggiepanda:

Ditto. Except my experience was with Red Cross volunteer work at their retail store. I was accepted to help out to set up the (overpriced, "lux" Op shop) store pre-opening. After my first day, they said they would call to let me know when I should come in next, but I never got a call back. I called back but they said I wasn't needed anymore (I needn't mess up anything). I was a student with no work experience, insecure, desperate and hoping to get some experience with free work.

Since they didn't want to help me or want me, now that I am employed, I assume they still don't need my help/donations , considering there are many other charities out there. I hope that things have changed since then, giving young inexperienced unemployed adults a chance to take another step in their life.

      • I've been following that Kotuku expose, and nothing came out of it. They just waited for the issue to blow over.

EBGames just sent out canned responses, and that they would follow up. They didn't. No actions were done to the manager, looks like they supported the manager anyway and that he is probably working there.

Whatever abuses that Kotaku has brought up, well it has sunk again and EBGames is free to continue their abuse.

        • Well that is the standard nowadays…

Ppl got a very low attention span.

it would have been hard to price compare or to find out if there is a deal for that item.

The dumb thing is most ppl got internet in their hands nowadays

which makes it so easier to compare prices or to find out if there is a deal.

      But they don't do it.

  • It's always been like that.

  • +2

Eh. Every industry loves the uninformed customer.

To be fair, I think a lot of EB is game trade ins too? 2nd hand shit?

    • Trade ins are a load of crap.

They buy your item for diddly squat
then you see then sell it for double the price

      • +6

        Pretty sure that's the point.

      • +1

if they didn't do this, they wouldn't be open for business…
they would be where GAME is now……..dead

      • +2

It's more than double - and there's nothing wrong with that. They have to make a margin on something.

        • -7

Making a margin is one thing

Selling it for double or triple the purchase price is unfair to the seller..

          @tyler.durden:
Pre-owned games take up shelf space. This or any other storage location costs money. Try running a business.
They're not forcing anyone to trade-in their games. You accept what they offer or not.

        • +5

@tyler.durden: How they treat their employees is not the point of discussion (though that is abhorrent). You clearly have zero idea of how to run a business, let alone deal with second-hand goods. You don't just buy an item and immediately sell it at double/triple the price and all of that be profit. There are actual costs involved with selling. Staff processing costs, cost of cleaning products, cost of shelf space (based on rent), losing value while it sits without selling, risk that it might not ever sell, GST when it does actually sell.

In saying ALL of that - even if there were zero costs involved, and they were able to immediately sell at a 200% markup, it would STILL NOT BE UNFAIR ON THE SELLER. It's not like they've stolen it from them. The seller has plenty of other options (eBay, Gumtree etc) but has decided to take the easy route and get a guaranteed sale at EB. I personally never trade in there - but that's my decision.

          Get a grip, dude.

        • +2

          @tyler.durden:

          whatever…

          no…

it means I don't give a shit anymore

        • @tyler.durden: Same thing. Night!

        • @Max Power: The thing is they dont tell you what your trade in value is per game unless you ask.
There was 1 time i traded in some games and only got 30c from one of them O.o… I didnt ask how much i gotten from each game (which i know its my fault) but when i read the receipt i was quite shock. If i knew the value would only gv me 30c i wouldnt have traded in and could've sold it on gumtree or ebay… Guess what, they sold that game preowned for $15 =="

        • I believe they buy it from you for a third of the expected sell price. So if they estimate it would be sold in a week for $30, you get $10.

        • @Michael15286: Then in my case they should've gaven me $5 instead of 30cent ==" Oh well lesson learnt, always ask the breakdown when you trade in xD

      • +2

Yeah man I agree, they should be selling for half of what they purchased for. Thats how you make the moneiezz

EB World has three million members apparently. Surely, you are not saying they are all unaware mothers.
I know there are some people on Ozbargain who are not unaware mothers and who have joined EB World in possession of all their senses. :-)
If everybody bought where it is cheapest 99% of businesses in Australia could close as buying overseas for goods is cheaper and no hassle.
Only perishable goods cannot be bought that way.

    • +14

      find where its cheapest
      price match it at eb
      get eb points ^_^

      • +1

Except that cheap in Australia still means it is expensive compared to the rest of the world!

        • -1

But with some games the servers you access from games bought overseas are oversees, so you get extra lag and disconnections. Plus there is the hassle of waiting 10 or more day, returning faulty disks etc. I used to buy mainly from Ozgameshop in Britain but after a bad experience with a lost item I have ditched them, except for purchase of Xbox Gold Live. There price is or was at least a month ago about $40 less than EB Games. Was by assured by Ozgameshop the servers would be exact same one as those accessed if I bought from a retail store here in Australia. So far no lag and no problems.

        • when you look at the state of our $. It could be worse….

        • @yellowrhino93:

If Australia got rid off that awful property speculation and started to develop a proper industrial sector the currency would not be so soft.
Given the amount of property speculation it is the people's own fault in my opinion.

And you know what….it will be worse. Just check back in 6 months.

        • Not anymore! The USA's $50-$60USD RRP is basically the same $70-$80 we pay here on release day from Big W/Target/JB.

@johnno07: Shows how much money they were ripping off during the good times!

  • +2

I'm an EB World Member. But I mainly get them to price match and take advantage of the extra trade credit if I can't sell the game. It's convenience of having all you want in one location, doesn't mean the prices are going to reflect that added convenience.

  • +6

Yes I am a mother and I joined EB World, though to be honest, I don't have any of the modern consoles. I once bought a 2nd hand Wii and used it maybe 3 times. My 5yo son doesn't play consoles. He has an iPad with educational games.
I DO, however, play my cherished N64, but he doesn't get to touch that one.

    • +1

      how great are they.

Bit sad that your boy doesn't get to experience the magnificence that is the N64. Won't be long before he doesn't care about it anyway!

      • Lol Johno, he'll get to use it when he stops trashing the place. So probably when he's about 25 ;o)

        • Don't hold your breath - I'm nearly 25 and I'm not quite done trashing the place!

        • @johnno07:

Hahahaha, yeah I figured as much!
Might be time to lock up my N64 in a safe than lol.

  • +6

I'm pretty sure a lot of people who join EB World are gamers as well. I joined EB World since it's free anyway. There's really no loss from joining it. I price-match everything i buy from EB games with Target/Big W, and still can collect carrots so I honestly don't think EB World is that bad. Although true enough, everything from EB games is a lot more expensive then elsewhere if you don't price match. It's not just uninformed mothers who fall for these prices. It's anyone who doesn't do their research before buying that falls for them.

  • Meh, every store in every industry sells at least 1 item at rrp, it's just business.

  • EB World member, been level 4 for a long time as well. This is through trade ins (usually trade bait) and of course I price match the cheapest and still get the EB bonuses etc.

  • Every business loves uninformed consumers who'd buy at non-bargain-y price.

My dad used to get me games. While I have a fond memory of it, I think the games he've got me were sub-par now I look back.
It was a knock off Super Mario game with a character from a TV show. Not being ungrateful, I did enjoy it and I hold a fond memory of it.

Close to everytime i visit ebgames, there are mothers with there little children purchasing games and consoles for RRP, this makes me cringe, they could of saved $10-30 by purchasing it elsewhere

And you don't help them? Shame on you.

  • +4

people just like to take pot shots at EB because if you aren't informed you can get ripped.

they also get sucked in to join EB world

It's free, you can get bonus coupons and it helps keep track of your purchases. I really don't understand how people look down on this…

and unnecessary extras (eg. $2 disc cover)

To a parent with a kid with that doesn't appreciate the benefits of taking care of their stuff, this can be a lifesaver, which isn't a compulsory purchase

They need to read either join ozbargin or compare stores.

have you told anyone about ozbargain? Not everyone has a JB near their EB store and Target/Kmart/Big W doesn't always have the stock levels EB and JB do, the kid is probably just pressuring their parent for a specific game… try getting a kid to wait for it in the post…

  • +6

I'm a member and the best thing about it is hassle free warranty. They price match they have stock when big W/target doesn't and they know what they are talking about. The uniformed can walk in knowing nothing about the new skylanders and walk out informed.

What price do you put on service?

    • +4

The uniformed can walk in knowing nothing about the new skylanders and walk out informed.

Might have to remember to dress up next time I head into EB.

  • +1

I'm not sure why you guys that no games are cheaper overseas. Having come from the UK, games here are considerably cheaper than I ised to buy them. Even more so with the falling $.

    • +1

This place used to have a hard on for ozgameshop and some other places out of the UK… perhaps the lack of VAT?

But yeah generally the overseas stores have kind of fallen out of favour due to the dollar?

      • Because Ozgameshop used to be good. In fact, it used to be excellent. Though even before the dollar started to fall, they started jacking up their prices to the point where you were saving maybe $5 for the benefit of waiting 2 weeks for the game. Around the same time Big W and Target started selling new release games seemingly as loss leaders, and that was all she wrote.

  • +3

Not wholly true. I know fully grown adult men who purchase from EB:

    A) Games available elsewhere for cheaper
    B) Games available on other consoles THEY OWN for cheaper
    C) Games that get incredibly negative scores, and then they're surprised when they don't enjoy the experience, but they won't take it back because it's an exclusive for their next generation console.

I was in EB the other day, and it took the guy behind the counter 15 minutes to explain that the "New God of War" was just God of War 3 ported over. Don't even get me started on the conversation I heard about "But how could there be a Battlefront 2 if the new one is the first Battlefront?". Consumers are stupid.

    • +1

"But how could there be a Battlefront 2 if the new one is the first Battlefront?"

EA's marketing department will be getting bonuses this year!

  • +1

My son always wants to visit EB Games after playing soccer. He gets an allowance and I insist that the day before the visit he looks online at what EB Games has on offer that he may like, then he must check JB Hi-Fi, Ebay (I have a long established relationship with a few well known sellers - some drop ship importers while others solely Aussie items) and once in town visit other retailers before entering EB Games. What I find funny about EB Games is that you sometimes see new games on their shelves that are cheaper then pre-owned. Go figure. Good bargains are to be had there with a little research and a lot of browsing. Their pre-owned stock can be a treasure house. I've found items that are no longer available in any other retail store because they're maybe 5 or 10 years old. Look on Ebay and sellers are asking triple the price, yet they are still pre-owned versions, not new versions. Sometimes games are not even available on Ebay from an Aussie seller, and overseas sellers postage rates can be outlandish. My son has started a collection of FIFA and says some of the older versions are more enjoyable to play than the more recent. I don't know as I don't play any console games and hardly ever any PC games, just lost interest in them. Getting old I guess.

    • EA is known to literally take content out of newer games. But they don't care about the hate they get, because the consumers will still buy them. But I've never understood how someone can buy 5 sport games, of the same sport, and be surprised when they're similar but hey, maybe I just don't get the appeal of playing the same game every year with less content.

  • I price check everywhere before buying something for my hubby and sometimes the game is the same price everywhere or like a dollar difference - I'm talking jb, target, big w, Costco. Though I only ever buy him newly released games so maybe the price difference is more significant on older games?

Also not everyone has an oz bargain mentality! I don't like to bag those folks out because it would mean less bargain opportunities for me if I had to compete with them too!

    • +1

I don't know what games you've been buying but it's always a much more significant difference when I buy new release games.

  • I only go into eb when they have crazy sales and can pick up some old new games that I didn't want to pay $89 6 months ago and now are 2 for 50 bucks.

Back when eb was good I had a store that I made some good friends with and red carpet treatment was always there, even for a visit but yeh I do see silly parents pull out credit cards and bang 4 games on without a thought of getting it cheaper else where.

I always go into jb before eb then the haggle begins.

  • -1

Completely agree and it bothers me too.

Price matching is so easy. You do a quick search online, see the price, then just tell them the other shop sells it for X price and they match it.
It's always cheaper elsewhere. Why pay $30 extra for the exact same product and service? It's messed up.
And of course the extras like scratch guarantee, DLC, guide books, special editions, are all rubbish too.

  • The target maker of EBGames are not value conscience customers, rather mothers with disposable income to buy their son a box and the latest CoD because little Johnny asked for it, and it's his 11th birthday, and all the cool kids at school has one.

  • The problem with Kmart, Big W, Target is the gaming section is at the back of the store so for the sake of a few $ EB, or even Gametraders can be more convenient for some.

  • They keep people employed. So I don't see an issue.

    • For the person who negged me. You do know places even like Maccas now its all touch screen to order, so its already taken jobs away from teens and high schoolers. So Think more before negging someone.

If there isn't any retail customers like the mums, there will be no game shops and there will be no employment for young people. A lot of game shops already closed down due to being inefficient, price gouging etc but at the end of the day its employment that counts not scoring the best bargain inside the shop.

  • Buy a game at "jbig target mart" for $60 or go into eb (ducking to avoid the shredded plastic bags), find it on the shelf for $90 and then negotiate for them to price match?

I like supporting the "little" guy, but no thanks.

  • No different from other retailers really; EB advantage is that they are much more likely to have what you're after…

  • +2

Best place to get Steam credit. They're usually not quite up to date with the exchange rate.

  • +1

I like EB games, yep new prices are higher than others but for pre owned you can get some good deals. I like to trade as I cant see the point of having heaps of games that never come out of the box.
Sometimes 2 or 3 years later I may want to give that game another go or play it with my son… like recently I picked up DJ Hero (with turntable) for $9 and brutal legend for $4 for nostalgia sake…not worth hanging on to games when EB`s preowned are so cheap. I checked on Ebay for the same items and both were triple or more of the EB price.
I would hate to see us loose EB to be honest as they are not only convenient but the only dedicated games store we have left, so if they need to charge full whack to those not in the know in order to survive then so be it.

EB….pay full price for new releases, poor console packages compared to Big W, Target, Kmart and trade in things at a 3rd of resale value

    but…
-Stores everywhere, I have 4 within 30 min drive
-a huge library of pre owned games on all formats
-EB card rewards customers with extra deals.
-Pre owned consoles with warranty (only 3 months but better than buying private and getting zero)
-Loot!! where else could you physically check out Zelda monopoly or Mario chess?
-Staff, the ones I deal with are first and foremost gamers and usually happy to talk about new releases, price match and offer honest advice.

  • EB Games pricing for Lego Dimensions is ridiculous compared to Target and Big W. $169.95 vs $119 for the Starter Pack, the level and fun packs are a fair bit more expensive as well.

  • -1

It's more cringe worthy to see parents buying R18 games for their obviously under 10 y.o. child AND the EB staff knowingly sell it to them.

I don't really have much sympathy for people who don't actually check prices before buying so it's essentially that person's choice to buy something for more. New release prices have always been ridiculous, but that's only because you get it pretty much on the day it comes out. Simple supply and demand really…

    • R18 in theme, G in design. Games are more geared towards adults with their levels of gore and killing, and yet gigantic prompts coming up saying where to go, what to do, who your allies are, and what button attacks after 6 hours of doing nothing but attacking non-stop (sometimes all prompts at once (cough CoD))

So it's okay. Even though it says R18 on the cover, they're still selling the parent a game for babies. :3

      • LOL i didn't know CoD was R18… i was talking about MK, saw a kid holding a MK X asking his mum to buy it and the store sold it to them pretty quickly even when the staff knew it was for the kid.

        • CoD's not R18, I just used an example of a game that's adult in target and theme, but childish in design.

          Press F to pay respects.

        • @rukia: I've heard people tell me that CoD involving gore is "A big deal". Good luck finally joining us here a decade ago, Activision, Gears of War/God of War (to name but a few) beat you here by nine and ten years respectively.

        • +1

@FrankMcFuzz: I find the fact that EB games is still selling these games whilst fully aware that it is going to be played by minors after the whole GTA V ban for Target and Kmart… If another R18 game gets banned because of a "parental" outrage, these kinds of trading conducts are to blame.

  • Slightly related, article on EB games staff: http://www.kotaku.com.au/2015/07/inside-eb-games-when-the-dr…

  • Go home, binge game, return within 7 days. Rinse and repeat.

    • Can you still do this even with new (i.e. shrink wrapped) games? I rarely shop at EB anymore but I noticed they used to widely advertise the 7 day return thing whereas they don't now.

      • If you feel like you need to make an excuse, which you shouldn't, just say your significant other got you a copy

      • Not sure. Last time when games were shrink wrapped they allowed it as well. It is pretty easy to re-shrink wrap a game anyway.

It looks like their refund polices still apply.

        https://ebgames.com.au/terms

That means you could possible purchase PC games, install, refund, play play play.

  • That's why the business exists. They have a certain target market that the store gears itself towards. There are uninformed customers in every market and a lot of companies take advantage of it.
The consumer has made a choice NOT to do their due diligence and are paying a higher price.

In some cases there is strong consumer protection within the ACL to ameliorate this, like in financial products such as loans and mortgages.

Should it extend to consumer discretionary products? I don't think so, that would spoon feed consumers, make them too reliant on such protection and hence too lazy to do their own research and due diligence.

  • I always get stuck behind a mother wheeling a baby cart and letting her 8 year old roam the store while putting down $1000 worth of collector's edition pre orders for the latest Batmans and Call of Dutys. End up waiting for ages because the store only has one employee on.

  • +1

Well its the other way round for me:

I got these 3 Pre-Owned Games last week

    NFS Rivals PS3
    GoW 3
    FIFA 14

All for $15. All with cases, game manual, online play code and discs in great condition and for me thats an awesome deal.
Some of you probably would have sat on your dek for 4 hours looking on ebay and buying for much higher prices and thought you got a great deal.

And ya my local EB swaps the discs/games if I have any issue or happy to even give a full store credit even after 3 months :)

  • The people who buy every collector's edition are EB's favourite.

    • And then they pop up at garage sales and Ebay two months later at drastic price drops once the game gets its necessary bottom-of-the-barrel scores, as most games with collector's editions have been doing recently.

"Everything is worth what its purchaser will pay for it", or, in the videogame industry, significantly more than a sane person would. And often they'll purchase it before the store stocks it, by half a year's advance. Because, you know, there's nothing insane about paying money for something unobtainable for six months whose quality is undefinable.
