Toshiba Flashair II Wi-Fi Enabled SDHC Card 16GB for $18, 32GB for $35 on Clearance at Officeworks

340

Best price I've ever seen for a FlashAir (albeit for the 2nd generation, not the current generation). Some stock available around the place, pretty typical coverage for an Officeworks Clearance deal (guy at the store I'm at didn't even know about it and brought them out from the back). Good hunting.

The link above is for the 32GB model. The 16GB model is at http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/toshiba-16g…

The Toshiba FlashAir SDHC Memory Card makes software, drivers, cables and removing your SD card a thing of the past. Its wireless connectivity means you can share your pictures with your friends, transfer data between your devices and even upload to your social media accounts without touching your camera.

Description for 32GB model as follows:

The FlashAir is easy to use, simply insert it to your camera or camcorder and setup the wireless LAN function using your PC, tablet or smartphone and you'll be ready to wirelessly transfer your data.
• You can access the pictures on your FlashAir through a standard web browser or via the free iOS and Android apps.
• The wireless function is only switched on when necessary to keep power consumption low on your battery powered devices.
• The generous 32 GB capacity ensures you can store your photos and videos.
• It comes with a 5 year warranty.

Proudly made in Japan. I now declare the mass calling of Officeworks Stores open.

8, I put mine back. My Nikon DSLRs aren't compatible. :(

        • @damion:
Yes, I've tried something similar like this and it won't work on Nikon DSLR, but it works on point and shoot camera.

        • @dhie20:

Hmm wonder if it'll work on Canons. Apparently they're compatible with Eye-Fi

        • +1

          @dhie20:
Yeah, apparently it's got something to do with the old Nikons killing power to the sd card too early, the flash image gets stored but the wifi image fails.
There are work-around, like opening the lcd menu, but they seem to be a pain in the butt.
          Canons seem to be okay

        • @damion:

Could also just leave the camera in live preview mode while you access your files. I don't think it's too much of a pain in the butt.

        • @CVonC:
I don't have Canons. I tried on D5100 and D7000, even with preview on LCD with no luck

How do you know these are 2nd gen cards? From what I can see, they are 1st gen.

Toshiba 32GB FlashAir Wireless SDHC Memory Card

    Not FlashAir II

These cards, whether 1st or 2nd gen, are slow. From this review of a 2nd gen card

Sequential read speed 18.1MB/s, write 6.9MB/s
Random read speed 11.4MB/s, write 3.0MB/s

For reference, the Samsung SDHC Plus 32GB has sequential speeds 70.00/19.82 R/W, random speeds 66.13/19.71 R/W

1st gen cards will be even slower as they are rated Class 6 instead of 10.

    • wow that is so slow!

    • Both images on the website are of class 10 cards

    • The ones here say W-02, which I believe is 2nd gen.

    • I have them in my hand and can confirm that they are FlashAir II (Class 10).

        Mind doing some speed tests?

        Also, any 64gb avail?

        • Speed tests please. And does anyone know if these work with a 5D Mark II using a CF adaptor?

        • Happy to if you can point me towards directions as how to do some of those tests.

@Yapapi: download crystaldiskmark and run it for the SDCard - http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskMark/index-e.htm…

        • +2

          @bargainaus:

Couldn't get crystaldiskmark working. Used H2testw 1.4 instead. Results:
          Writing speed: 11.1 MByte/s
          Reading speed: 15.9 MByte/s

Acceptable for me, I mean I really just want it for the addition of Wifi functionality to my camera.

        • @Yapapi:

          got myself a 32gb one

can confirm the same results with h2testw :)

        • @CVonC:
WiFi works a treat, so good to be able to easily and wireless transfer photos to smartphone.

        • @Yapapi:

yeah works with my canon 700D :D

  • No confirmed stock in inner Brisbane suburbs, best I can find is "ring store to check" status.

Here's a similar device I found online, anyone seen any reviews on it? This one you add your own micro-sd card to, US$16.99:

I may have a lead on some stock. If you want one posted and are willing to pay for s&h then PM me. I am relying on a friend to grab them so expect to leave a tip for them.

    • Typical NSW 'charity'.

  • Highett VIC indicates that they have stock, but I called and have been told they are customer returns.

    • Probably because average users do not know how to use them or didn't update the OS first (firmware).

  • Heaps of stock at Moorabbin, Vic.

None on the shelf but looked to be 20+ behind the front counter when I asked.

    Got myself a 16gb one.

  • Thanks got the last one in chatswood.

        I thought I did. :-$

        Did now.

  • @ c0balt, were they put aside for orders/pickup?

Looks like I missed this deal (Vic), bugger.

It would be awesome if someone like TA or others could work out a deal on any/good Wifi card.

    Thanks OP

  • This could be good for digital clock radios and digital photo frames, where they don't have any inbuilt wifi — am keen try it out. It's a great shame about the Nikon incompatibility — that would have been an ideal use!

    • These send photos and do not receive them. I don't see how this could be useful inside a digital photo frame at all.

Also they are compatible with Nikon Cameras - just you will need to leave on live preview to prevent the camera from cutting the power to the SD card.

      https://flashair-developers.com/en/support/forum/#/discussio…

      • That's a pity — scratch the digital photo frame idea then.
Live Preview eats the battery in no time, it's quicker / more convenient to plugin the camera or swap SD cards than use something like this. With the extreme cost and slow speed, it's hard to see what advantage it could offer for a Nikon.

  • Highett Officeworks = Moorabbin, Vic

Last I checked today they only had the new gen3 16gb cards which scanned at around $70 .
The cashier girl couldn't find any old clearance stock :(

    • That's what happened to me at that shop, but I asked the cashier girl to dig a little deeper and she found one that eventually scanned as $18 (W-02 model). She just pulled one out of stack of what looked around ~20 identical cards and it was the one I was after.

Maybe it was their last W-02 and was just in a stack of the 3rd gen cards. I was there around 1pm.

      • Well done, you are lucky :)

    • 'As of August 10 2012'

There's a good chance that many people have newer cameras than that, such as myself, and the card works fine in my RX100.

    • That's for Gen 1 cards and is incorrect for this card. See my comment below.

There were 2x 32gb cards left at OW Richmond at Anzac Hwy in SA. The website shows other stores have stock too. For people wondering, yes these work in CF adapter. Also 64gb cards are not WiFi capable - they don't exist. I've even looked at putting a 64gb Micro SD into a WiFi adapter (put any micro sd into the adapter and convert it to wifi). Yes, the wifi adapters exist but stick to Eyefi or other reputable brands. There's lots of cheap adapters on Ebay but those Chinese no name brand ones will either not be compatible or degrade speed considerably. Best source for reviews on those is Amazon. Also there's 3 compatability lists for these. One for the Gen 1 cards that are Class 6 and another for Gen 2 cards that are Class 10 which are these and Gen 3 cards (at the top) only on the English Japan site. Lastly, the default firmware can be buggy and cause disconnects and slow transfers and write speeds. Install the latest firmware before use!
