Moving to Papua New Guinea as an Expat (PNG)

I am planning on moving there soon as my partner has secured a job in Port Moresby for a few years.

Her employer is taking care of a lot of things but I wanted to see if anyone has some advice on what I can do from a money saving perspective before I move there. E.g. buy heaps of olive oil because it's 5 times the price over there.

Note, we get a shipping container to move all our stuff. The entire move is covered by her work.

Any other advice would be good too.

First off congratulations, Money saving perspective buy everything you can get shipped that has a long shelf life, also make sure you have enough clothes (as it's hard to buy anything you like/cost) if you don't want to buy bottled water all the time get one of those counter top filter waters or you can boil your water (I haven't had any problems with the later).

You won't be too bored luckily since you will be in the capital and it is far far far more developed than any other part of the country, bring a set of golf clubs if you play golf. But I suggest a hard drive with movies/tv shows internet is costly and slow.

Just out of my own curiosity what area will she be working in? I assume its one of these three LNG, Embassy or Aid.

    • Cheers for the reply, will start stocking up. I'm not that into golf but you're not the first person to suggest clubs so I might take a few lessons and get a set.

I've got the media stuff sorted so movies and TV won't be a problem. I'm expecting to pay $300/month to get a decent internet connection; it's steep but will likely be our only household expense!

I'll answer the other stuff in PM.

      • Thanks for the PM, you should also pack your favorite appliances (mixers, slow cookers etc) if they are also gonna freight back after your work is over or just buy 'cheap' brands and dump and leave I suppose.

Buy a UPS before you leave if you're bringing a desktop I can't stress this enough you'll experience your fair share of blackouts even if your compound has a back up generator it will take a few seconds to kick in.

Haha yeh I need my internet when I'm there as well probably my biggest expense outside of food.

I've sold my NAS and covered to USB to get ready for the blackouts. I figured since we run laptops and a ssd in my media centre, it won't matter too much.
