Perfume at Duty Free any cheaper than Myer?

Came across a Dior sample I really like, it's not available in discount chemists, so will have to go to Myer and pay full price.

Since I will be traveling soon, I wonder if duty free would be cheaper or just same price minus GST?

If same price as Myer, may be I would get from Myer and claim GST back through TRS. As I have other stuff from Myer I will be claiming anyway.

By the way is perfume ok as carry on?

  • Why not go in a duty free store and compare the prices? I don't think perfume is ok as carry on. To claim GST on that, you need to get your bill verified at the airport before check in, and then put your perfume in your luggage (not your carry on bag). Upon clearing security, you can show your stamped receipt to TRS for a refund.

IIRC, the perfume at duty free is not cheap at all… sometimes I find it is actually more expensive than retail shops.
At best, the prices are pretty similar, unless you get it from their bargain bin that holds lots of fragrances that have been around for some time.

If you're planning on claiming back the GST, remember that the invoice(s) must total $300 or more from one retailer.

There's the LAGs policy that you need to be mindful of (container must be no more than 100mL) and if as a result you need to check it in, then follow this:

If you want to make a TRS claim for liquids, aerosols or gels that you are not able to take on board because of these limits, take your goods to the Client Services counter before they are packed in your checked luggage and checked in with the airline.

NOTE: There seems to be a new policy for LAGs… but their wording doesn't seem to be very clear so I'll add the official link here so that I don't risk misinterpreting it:

  • Depends on the exchange rate I guess, but sometimes it's cheaper (I'm assuming you buy it on the way home though). And Myer/DJs sometimes gives you extras like a matching body lotion. If you don't need it now, you can always check out the prices and buy it when you return home.

Also, the 100ml carry on thing applies on flights to Australia and US, so remember to buy it before checking in so it can be stowed in your luggage! I had a total mind blank when I was overseas so I couldn't buy a few items when I was waiting for my flight, the other reason is my luggage was so full I could hardly open it to even slip in lollies or anything let alone anything duty free!

  • I find if you buy from overseas through ebay etc it works out a lot cheaper, I buy the tester bottles and tends to be about $50 cheaper than myers for premium perfumes

Why people buy perfume ? Because they are stink ? lol

    • You were drunk when you typed that!

  • Found in on oo.com.au, much cheaper than Myer. I think I would just check the price at the airport, unless there's signficant savings I would rather order it online than carrying it back and forth.

Before this thread I didn't know that you can have the receipts validated prior to checkin, I always thought that the goods have to be with you and show them to the custom officer at the TRS counter. I have learnt something new. But what's there to stop you not putting the goods into a checkin luggage? Isn't this a loophole if pass it to someone who's at the airport?

  • The duty free stores will match the other stores price and then take another 10% off. That has been my experience.

  • Asian duty free are the cheapest
    You can call them
Otherwise can't you just stock up on more samples?
